Great quiet park with the longest pull-thru sites I have ever seen. The electric and water were strong and clean. The only tough thing about this park is it is pretty far from the DC area if that is where you want to visit but the tranquility is nice too. The entrance and exit to the park itself are a bit narrow for a big rig but completely doable.

--------------------This RV camp was renamed Whitetail RV Camp, concurrent with the rename of Fort A.P. Hill to Fort Walker.--------------------- Fort AP Hill being renamed for Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War surgeon who became a prisoner of war and the only woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor. The facility hosting the RV Park is scheduled to be redesignated Fort Walker on 25 August 2023. Whitehall RV Park offers: Thirty 50amp full hookup sites (8 pull-through and 22 back-in), with tent camping sites co-located. Each RV site offers water, sewer and electric (20/30/50amp) hookups, an asphalt pad and a picnic table. WiFi access is limited, and is only available outside/near/inside the RV Service Center. Get the passcode for that local WiFi from the MWR office, as well as the door code for the RV Service Center. StarLink speeds range up to 40-50Mbps. One vehicle per site in addition to RV. Additional vehicles may be parked in the RV Service Center parking lot. Camping is available year-round. RV Service Center has bathhouse and laundry facility. Laundry has three commercial-grade washers and dryers, costing two-dollars ($2.00) per load. The RV Service center has showers, with each male and female section having one large handicap-accessable shower stall and two smaller private shower stalls. There is a common firepit, with picnic table near the RV Service center. Beyond/outside the RV park, there is designated tent camping sites available. As for the prior name of the campground, the RV campsite was named after Confederate General A.P. Hill's horse, a grey stallion called Champ. Ambrose Powell Hill was a Confederate general in the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War (1861–1865). As a Confederate General, he gained early fame as the commander of Hill's Light Division, becoming one of Stonewall Jackson's ablest subordinates. The General was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg; and Sergeant Tucker possessed and rode Champ during the war. The renaming of streets, buildings, and other facilities just on Fort Walker is delineated for over sixty (60) instances to address linkages predominately to Confederate Civil War personalities and battles. Even the road and tavern named to honor Sergeant Tucker, Champ the horse Civil War rider, has been renamed. We stayed at the facility and post about two weeks before the "official" name change, but signs were already changing through the facility.

A quick overnight stay during a trip up Rte 301. Got caught up in a Post Exercise for 1 1/2 hours and had to wait in the front gate reception area! Clean area and quiet!

We only stopped for an overnight stay and did not use any of the facilities so this review is limited. The registration process was handled entirely over the phone and was very efficient. I paid and was given a site number, # 24 pull through so was able to go directly to the campground. The site was long and level, power and water were both good. FYI for those in big rigs with toads not able to back up - We travel in a 40 foot Class A motorhome with a full size pick up in tow. It would have been nice if the entrances to the campground were a little wider. It was much easier to access our pull through site by going in the out and exiting through the in. If we had come in the first entrance we would have had to make a sharp right turn to pull around a light pole into site 24 without unhooking. Not saying it couldn't be done. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Previous review from some time ago needs updating: major changes have taken place. Sites are much improved, and new equipment placed in laundry area. But those improvements (funded by a grant from my understanding) do not justify a doubled rate. Now having more experience with other military parks with which to compare this location, I agree the rates are way out of balance for the amenities offered. This park also used to accept National Senior Pass discount which helped. After travelling to all but 5 US states, we are still seeing Famcamp rates as low as $18- $22 (some still accepting Sr. Pass too). Those rates include decent cell/WiFi/antenna reception. If I was able to get just ONE of those at this park I would be happy!! WiFi and cable r available only inside of laundry bldg. Surely one repeater could be placed in this small, 30-site campground? I think the comps used to set prices here were based surrounding private parks in Richmond and Fredericksburg rather than other mil parks. It is definitely NOT comparable for location or amenities. While I am very thankful to have our famcamps available, the vast differences in pricing and amenities is disappointing, particularly in an environment where one expects a degree of standardization and fairness.

Quiet, peaceful and off any well traveled path. Sites are paved and the pull-throughs were long enough that my 44' fiver and F450 fit easily. Large, level, paved sites with good utility connections (FHU). Laundry/Bath House was immaculate. As others have said, no activities for kids with the exception of an almost laughable 2 seat swing at one end of the campground. Grounds very clean and neat. No wifi and only had 1 bar intermittently of T-Mobile. On the + side, Starlink reception was excellent and the Richmond TV stations strong. No shade in the central part of the campground so the summer sun can be brutal. MP's patrolled daily and MWR staff drove through daily and stopped to chat with anyone out. Very small Exchange with items catering to troops there for training. Food Lion grocery store about 5 miles away in neighboring Bowling Green. The only complaint is that no outdoor fires were permitted, not even a propane pit. A community fire pit is located near the Bath House and requires you to call the base Fire Marshall and get a permit before use. Firewood not available nearby. All in all, a good experience.

NO THRILLS or FRILLS here. We’ve stayed here both prior to and after the renovation. The price to stay here has gone from $390.00 per month (2017) to $900.00 per month (2022). That’s an increase of $510.00 per month – MORE THAN DOUBLED! The renovation included paved spots and 50amp connections throughout the park. The 3 washers and 3 dryers (1 in which didn’t work the entire 3 months we were here) were replaced. You would think that for $900.00 a month every site would have access to good WiFi. This is something that should have been upgraded during the renovation and the opportunity was not taken. IMHO, this park upgrade is NOT worth the extra $510.00 a month especially when you consider where this park is located – in the middle of NOWHERE. This is NOT Ft Belvoir. Champs RV park is not close to any of Virginia’s main attractions (Washington DC is a 2 hours north on a good traffic day, Richmond is an hour drive South. This park is typically only 1/4 full with homesteaders. This is a nice park, but NOT $900.00 nice as reflected by the typical low occupancy. I would venture to say that occupancy would increase if the monthly rate was reduced back to $750.00 a month. I know of people who don’t stay here now because of the higher rates and I’m personally looking into other options. It’s hard not to see this as price gouging.

Not much to say one way or another. Had a roomy paved pull through but still couldn't get fully level in our 39 ft coach. Quiet place. Didn't have need to check in personally (probably a COVID-19 measure), so "hospitality" is based on a few phone calls. Didn't use any facilities as we were there to visit Civil War sites. Fort AP Hill is off the beaten path and no commissary; They said there was a small Exchange but we could not find it. Based on all the other mil camps we've been to since first of year, I think $25-30 would be more appropriate instead of $35 that we paid.

NOTE: At the time of our visit and through October 7, ROAD REPAIRS WILL REQUIRE REROUTING TO CAMPGROUND. You will need to ENTER VIA THE RANGE GATE which is directly across Route 301 from the main gate. You will get an email and map from the office after you make reservations, Just take the route clearly outlined on the map and you will be fine. Don't be tempted to look at the map and try the "apparent" shortcut. Some of the roads are closed (Campbell for one), and others bear a different name on the street sign vs. the map/GPS/. Save yourself some trouble. We rode around in the dark for at least 20 minutes -- and many miles out of the way before learning to just do it the easy way!) Now for the review... We have stayed here a number of times -- before and after the remodel. The renovations have made the sites much nicer; level, full hookups, picnic table. A fire pit with benches next to the little rec center. Sites are very close together, and no trees, but most of the neighbors (weekday) seemed to be gone during the day, so very quiet. Be aware cell service is minimal (one bar, occasionally two, with Verizon), internet never did work this time; previously we have had to go to the rec center to get a decent signal. Due to COVID, the rec center (laundry, showers, TV, etc.) was closed, but even sitting in the parking lot directly in front we were unable to get a signal that held. However, both the Food Lion and McDonalds in nearby Bowling Green had a signal good enough to pick up email or other non-confidential tasks. Staff are great. We even got a text message letting us know they were cutting grass that day and asking us to be aware of any items that could be in the way (assuming you wanted your grass cut). If you frequently stay at fam camps, you may think the fee seems a little steep for this out-of-the-way location ($35). I don't disagree since prior to remodel we stayed for $18 with Golden Age discount. And we have stayed at other military facilities that were nicer and cheaper. BUT if you do an area comparison of private campgrounds, this one is competitive with the locals in the immediate area. The Richmond Supply Depot on the south side of Richmond (off I-95) is within $5 but no sewer, no bath house, no internet. The two private ones a few miles down the road are about the same price but not as nice sites. If you need the proximity to Richmond, or the bells and whistles (pool, entertainment, etc.) you can go to the Americamps 30 miles south for $60+ or Kings Dominion for about the same price. Makes Champs Camp seem like a bargain even counting the extra gas! Will definitely return.

Great staff, very nice and professional. Very nice renovation. Paved sites. Nice tables. Laundry/Day Room is great with new everything. IMHO, it is over priced at $35/night in the middle of no where. Even laundry is high at $2 per load to wash and $2 per load to dry. There is a Food Lion store, Class 6 (VA ABC),fuel, and drug store in nearby Bowling Green and not much else. Verizon worked in campground. WiFi range is limited but works well if you are close enough. FYI, MWR also has house rentals. We were here for a wedding at "The Lodge", an amazing facility that accommodates about 20. Commercial kitchen. Historic chapel down the road was also used. Throwing this out for those looking for such a venue. It worked well for the wedding we had. Note on access. From 301 you encounter a "gate complex". It is not used nor is the other one you will see. Wind your way up the hill to the Quonset check point. Big rigs should go on the far side of the hut to get ID checked. The directions here are no longer correct...never saw a game check station. Just proceed on AP Hill road until you see the huge Army Reserve complex. If you turn left there you will arrive at the camp ground in less than a mile. If you do not make the turn, after about a mile you will soon see the RV storage area. MWR is behind that storage area. Think you're supposed to go to MWR first if they are open. Probably should call them.

Nicely renovated campground. Sites are long but narrow. No trees, no WiFi if your parked away from bldg which has a tv, washer and dryers, no cable. Expensive for having no amenities.

We enjoyed staying here with evening walks around the base. Cannot beat 13 bucks per night for full hook up if you have lifetime national park card and we are retired military. It is being completely renovated and not available until Nov 2018. Counted 14 deer in field next to campground. Quiet and peaceful except people cranking up vehicles every morning when leaving to go to work. Great MWR attendants. Run when they mow the grass which they slung rocks on rear of my motorhome and cracked fiberglass. I hope it is really nice after renovation. I will go back.

We visit the Richmond area frequently and there are only a few campgrounds within an hour drive; two of those few are military—Champs Camp north of the city and Richmond Supply Depot on the south. We have stayed at RSD in the past and it os much closer. However, Champs has FHU which we need for longer stays. Champs has laundry and shower/batj facilities as well. NOTE: This facility will close Sep, Oct, and part of Nov for upgrades to sites. The issues noted in other reviews re placement of utilities, etc. will hopefully be fixed diring that time.

My wife and I stayed here in June and I left a fairly good review, then. So, we're back here in August for a couple of weeks and boy howdy, does it look different without any trees in the campground! The mosquitoes are still bad (but they've had so much rain, it's sort of expected), the hookups are still screwy, but the facilities for showers/bathrooms/laundry are still great. The deer, fox, and turkey are still all around and it's still front and center, if you like Civil War history (Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and Wilderness battlefields are within 20-30 minutes away, not to mention Richmond, Petersburg, and Appomattox Courthouse are near enough for real Civil War buffs). The MWR staff are helpful and friendly, and they have told me that future improvements for the RV park include brand new hookups relocated to be more user friendly (not on both sides of coach and stretching out to 25 ft for water, sewer, or electric, and putting in 50 amp svc.), paving the whole park, building up concrete pads for coaches, and making all the middle sites pull-thru. As soon as it stops raining and the sun comes back out, I'll snap a few pix to show improvements in progress.

My girl and I had an awesome time here. We had to share water hookup but no issue there either. Bathrooms/showers were clean too. They are going thru some rework to improve the camp ground. Wish they would leave some of ther trees and just trim them up. We did have to look around for a site to fit the 37 foot RV but that was all good. Bowling Green is just down the road (5 min) with a Food lion, Dollar General and Family Dollar. There are 3 Walmart about 30-40 min away in various directions (King George, Ashland, Fredericksburg, info in the bath house lounge area). We talked about it and would stay here again. Park closing in mid July for tree removal.

It may just be me, but I think this place gets a bum rap. The park is like a state park setting; very quiet and serene (birds chirping, deer everywhere, etc.) The people at the Lodging Office were nice and knowledgeable and the bathrooms, laundry and clubhouse were very nice. Yes, the layout is somewhat baffling and looks like it was cobbled together out of spare parts during a drunken festival, but after a little bit of looking around, it all came together. And, compared to a lot of place (including state parks), the price is right, $21/night. And, if you have an "America the Beautiful" National Parks Pass, it knocks the price down to $13/night. And, previous posters have lamented about there not being a Walmart for miles around; big deal! You have plenty of local stores that'll probably have what you need in Bowling Green, which is just a few miles away. I like the place; the only drawback for me was the gnats, biting flies and mosquitoes. They need to get the dead leaves off the ground and do a little pest control. Other than that, we'd camp here, again.

This place is a nightmare, good luck trying to put together water, sewage and electric. You have to go around to every available site to see if it is available. People are using water and not sharing with the site next to it. The paperwork they give you at the office doesn't say anything about not having the correct hook ups. All the long time people have the 50 amp but not all the 30 even work. No dump site. But the bathrooms are clean and the laundry area is nice. I would not return here. If you need anything its a good 45 minute ride to get to a Walmart or Kmart.

Not designed for large RV's needing 50Amp power. Make sure you have a plan B before coming here. Of the 50 sites available only 8 have 50A. On our arrival half of these we taken by people in small RV's. Of the remaining 50A sites only one was long enough and not blocked by low hanging limbs, but it had no water. We used water from an unoccupied adjacent site. With a Golden Age discount the price is great ($13). Remote, very quiet and friendly office staff. There appears to be no on-site supervision. The MWR office is about a mile away.
