We are new to full time RVing and do not have any experience with other military campgrounds. We found Hanscom AFB Famcamp to be an outstanding experience. The purpose of our RV adventure is to see the history of our country. At Hanscom Famcamp we found it in boatloads. The base is located in between Lexington and Concord MA and on our first day we visited the Minuteman National Historic Park, which was less than ten minutes from the famcamp. Boston, Salem, and Quincy Mass are all within an hour drive. So much history to see and experience! The facilities at the CG were clean and functional. Camp management was super attentive to our needs and kept us informed when power was lost to the camp for a brief period of time. Each evening when weather permitted there was a campfire for everyone to enjoy. We met numerous super fellow campers and the camp management and staff worked diligently to maintain and improve the roads and hookups. The famcamp is very pet friendly. Access to the camp is through a quiet off-base neighborhood and it sits adjacent to the base runways. The air traffic is almost exclusively private and commercial small jets and planes which take off and land all day long but pretty much ends by bedtime. Hanscom AFB has all the necessities (commissary, BX, Class VI, gym, theater, chapel) but does lack a laundromat. The famcamp provides five washers and dryers. Overall we could not have had a better experience for our first time on the road and would definitely recommend the Hanscom AFB Famcamp to friends and family. We plan to return next year.

Very nice campground close to Boston area. Site is beside the airfield so you will get noise from aircraft. Not really too bad. The airfield shuts down at night so sleeping was not an issue. Other then the airfield noise, it was a very quiet place. We stayed for 10 days while family was in hospital in Boston. Ann-Marie (Camp Host) was very awesome to deal with and she will go out of the way to help you. We had to stay three extra days and that was not an issue with her. The Famcamp is located off the secured area of the base, but that is not an issue. Never seen anyone going through the area that was not staying there. Very dog friendly. Getting onto the base for shopping or anything else is easy. They do have a bunch of rules while staying, but its not a big deal. If your not doing anything stupid then there is no issue. They have sites as you first come in that are hardstand and out in the open with full hookups. There is also wooded sites that are FHU and are 30/50 amp. We stayed in the wooded area. If you need to get into Boston area its real easy. You can drive to Alewife station and take the train in. Parking is $9.00 for all day on weekdays and 3.00 weekends. The parking garage there can be a little tight, but not impossible. I was able to get in with a 1-ton dully CC longbed. The max height for the garage is 7ft 2in. Alewife is about 20 min depending on traffic and simple to get to. There is a VA located about 5 miles from the camp also. Water pressure was good and drinkable. No issues with the power. On site laundry with fairly new machines 1.00 to wash and dry. FHU sites were 26 and W/E were 24.They do not take reservations, but you can call ahead to see what is open. I was told they have never had to turn anyone away due to being full. If you arrive after hours there is a map on the office door showing what sites are open, just find a spot and check in the next morning. You will need current registration for vehicles and current shot records if you have pets. If you bring a firearm, let the Ann-Marie know. She has the forms at the office you will need to fill out. 30 day max stay, but if no one is on the waiting list then you can extend past the 30. Overall we had a very good experience here and will return.

We like to stay at military campgrounds. The reviews we looked at were positive. Unfortunately we did not experience the same. We had a reservation and confirmation number. We arrived at the campground about 2:00pm. No one at the office with a "Closed for Training" sign on the door. Our name was not listed on the "Reservation Board". No one answered the "contact for assistance" phone number or email address posted on the office door. I walked the entire campground and there was not 1 empty campsite. In the mean time, 2 more 5th wheels pulled in behind us, also with reservations and confirmation numbers. We had no choice but to look for another campground nearby. We had to pay $123 to stay there. The next day a different MWR employee, then the campground manager, called us. She provided about 50 excuses about why they have a hard time running the campground. She never did explain how, or why, they intentionally let at least 3 incoming campers, with reservations, come to the campground when they knew there were no spots available.

!WARNING! IF YOU ARE YOUNG AND/OR ACTIVE DUTY STEER CLEAR OF THIS DECREPIT RETIREMENT FACILITY In the past year living at this camp my wife and I (and the 3 other full time active duty) have experienced nothing short of intense discrimination and rudeness without reproach from counselors ***** and *****. Despite remaining polite, we have all been badgered on a continual basis for 'gaming the system' by saving our BAH while residing in our 5th wheels. While nothing could be further from the truth, the counselors here have made every effort to exclude active duty personnel from using the camp facilities. Whether it is attempting to force us to rotate our trailers around so their retiree full timer friends can have the 'prime' spots, creating new rules on a consistent basis targeted at forcing us out of the camp, or creating a hostile atmosphere with neighbors who "complain" about you all day while you are at work, this has the be the poorest run military camp in the nation. My tipping point came it was noted that one of the retirees who has stayed here the longest, and with strong ties to the counselors messing with my wife. On several occasions this retiree would wait until I leave for work in the morning and then come park his truck with tinted windows behind our camper in the woods to observe my wife sunbathing in her suit. Although I reported this after 3 instances to the counselors (and their superior who is also a civilian), nothing was done. The issue was not even addressed with the retiree and no follow up was completed. There are many other examples that I could provide; however, my best word of advice is to stay away if you are an active duty troop with an RV. Spend the extra $500 to live off base without the headache. *If I could give negative points on this review I would.

My husband and I are both military combat veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq, both over %50 service connected VA and my husband is Retired-branch does not matter. First, we parked to go into the office to register and came out to find her looking into the windows of our MotorHomes. My seven year old was scared half to death. Our RVs are our HOMES-this isn't just a little camping trip-WE LIVE IN THEM! Then she asked very rudely to our none military friend, who we were sponsoring, why we didn't have military stickers on our vehicles. One, not all branches/bases give them, two, if your retired and not near a base or do not work on one, you don't get one, three, its NONE of her DAMN business-she isn't MILITARY POLICE. My husband and I have military IDs (and VA service connected IDs for that matter) which we showed when we checked in at the office AND showed the MPs at the check point when we went to the COMMISSARY! Then, we filled out the paperwork to register, it never asked for specific animals, etc it just said pets, I put the number down and the man working in the office didn't ask about anything else, we paid and left. We ended up having to to fix the registration paperwork when we walking to the office to do so, the manager rudely said to the man working, "make sure you find out about those dogs". The ones that she clearly saw when she was peeping in the windows of our homes! Our dogs HAVE ALL REQUIRED SHOTS and WE LISTED PETS-THEY NEVER ASKED FOR ANYTHING MORE!!! WE EVEN HAVE SHOTS FOR OUR CATS-we travel with 3 if the manager is curious!!! We have been traveling across this country staying at Fam Camps on Posts and Bases since August, each base security is different as is each Fam Camp and rules. One thing is for sure, we have NEVER had anyone be RUDE like this women! I'm not a PVT and she isn't a SGT MAJ so I expect to be treated like that!! In FACT, I am willing to bet that women never spent a day as a soldier or airman-its THAT obvious! Today we did laundry and the dryer was occupied so we were waiting-another camper was told by the office to take our laundry out of the washer-really? They have that authority too? This place is ridiculous! I found out that they tried to harass the campers next to us until they found out his rank used to be O6...then they apologized-so now it's rank?! I'll never camp here again!

This Famcap suited our needs for a base camp to explore Boston. Since it's First Come First Served at this CG, we called the morning of our arrival and were told that 8 campers would be departing that day. We arrived at the Famcamp about 2:30pm and there was one FHU 50amp site left, so we took it. There's nothing special about this Famcap, but it's a great deal for a place to stay while visiting Boston. On two of the days we stayed, we drove the 30-minute drive to the Alewife Subway station, where we took the Red line and transferred to the Green, then Blue Line and stopped at the Aquarium. There, we boarded the Hop on-Hop Off trolley for a narrated tour of the city. The BEST thing about the Subway system in Boston is it's FREE for veterans! Just show your military ID to one of the Subway "ambassadors" (in the red shirts) and they will let you through into the subway system.

Arrived early afternoon on 1 Oct and found a full-hookup, pull-through site, one of five available. While setting up, Sharon, the park manager came by to check on us. She said that we should have checked in at the office before taking a site but we didn't know about that rule. More parks that are first come, first serve just say to take a site and then check-in. Our bad. My wife said she would walk over with her to do that and Sharon told us that the office was closed until 1:30 PM. OK, got that. The park sites are long and fairly well spaced. Water pressure and electric is good. Very nice laundry room; $1 to wash and $1 for dryers. Sharon has plenty of info for you about the local area and places to eat. Make sure you try Cafe Luigi's in Bedford! Amazing Italian food. You can call ahead and have your name put on the waiting list which helps with the long wait times on the weekends. The Park office sells Trolly Tour tickets for $32 which are good for 2 consecutive days and includes a couple of freebies including a harbor cruise. If you are a light sleeper, this is not the place for you. Air traffic starts before 6 AM and continues until 2AM the next morning, most of it corporate jets. Weekends are somewhat lighter but there is still considerable takeoffs and landings. I noticed several piles of dog droppings in different areas of the park.

The Park has a mixture of open sites and older shaded sites. We opted for the shade this time. While the Park is well maintained, the Staff make this A+. They organize a variety of activities for the campers. We were there for the (every) Friday AM bike ride and a canoe/kayak trip on the Concord River. Every evening at dusk there is a community camp fire which gave us a chance to meet many fellow campers. We will always stay here when in the area. Note: Although this AFB Famcamp doesn't take reservations (as most don't), they never turn anyone away.

Whats strange about this FamCamp is they do not take reservations. Its first come first serve but if no sites are available, you must park in the boondock area overnight till the office opens. I lucked out and found a vacant spot with power and water only and it was in the tree shade. Best to park at the office and walk the site if you arrive after hours or on weekends. Driving to it takes you on some narrow city streets in the neighborhood on the north side of the base however its easy access without going thru base security. They have full hook up sites that can handle 40' fifth wheels and many small sites with only water and power that are shaded. It was very quite and very dark at night. Only noise is random jets taking off during the daytime. Internet at the site is weak but its available in the group area next to the office which works well and they usually have coffee each morning. They have started updating some of the hookup posts in the shaded area and also have a dump station. Tent camping areas are available. The base has a very nice commissary, exchange, and class 6 store located at the new gas station. No diesel, only unleaded. Its a great location just off the interstate with little frills but is very convenient to visit the Boston area.

T.M. left this review using the Directory software: - While all the comments below are correct & this is a nice camp, there seem to be a few homesteaders here. The camp host is strict about no dogs tied up on site, must walk dogs in designated areas, but saw several people who ignored the rules. Was a no washing of vehicles rule but saw at least one camper washing their car. Over all it is a nice camp, close to all historical sites, close to the train, large sites, good laundry, close to the base etc but the campers who ignore the rules make it just a average campground. If you plan on taking Boston trolley tour & need handicap access do not buy Old Town Trolley tickets at famcamp, use City View Trolley, the silver trolley, it is less expensive, all trolleys have a lift and you can go to all the sites, Old Town does not.

We arrived on 8/9 and on way in saw a vacant site. At check in the person said they only had W/E and I told her about the site. 1st she said she hadn't checked them yet then she said she just gave it out so I took a W/E site. When hooking up I noticed the 50 Amp plug was upside-down. We checked the bathhouse and the men's shower were discussing. No one has cleaned the stalls with any cleaners because the walls had black dirt imbedded in the walls and floor. We checked the Laundry room and it has not been sweep or really cleaned in some time. Tried to find a camp host and no signs reflecting the host or who was on duty. The basic overall appearance of the park is very disappointing for an AF Famcamp. The place is seedy looking and the overall management of the park by military or civilian is very poor. We drove by the 1st vacant site noted in the beginning and on the 3rd day it was still vacant and that afternoon they called and offered it. I told her that was the same site we asked about 3 days ago and she had no answer. This tells me that no one checks the park daily for openings. No one checks each site after they leave because our spot was not, at least, blown off and the power switch was still on. My question still is, What does the Camp Host Do, just get paid? While there we noticed power flickering and on the 4th night power out and on and brownouts. Camper next to us experienced the same. Contacted the Office a person came and opened the main power box and said the breaker is rusted and they would call. We had no power and the fear of damage was to great so we let the CG early. This place should be shut down until they find proper management, camp host with job descriptions, the home build RVs removed (not NFPA Certified) unless the AF is willing to accept the risk of all damage. The poor quality of this Famcamp, its' management is a reflection of the poor quality leadership at the Senior Officer and Enlisted ranks.

Well, I agree with the comment from the active duty family that has been prejudiced against. I don't think hanscom famcamp runs beautifully because of ***** and ******, absolutely not! The camp after you check in is pretty much do it yourself, thank you. I don't see any of the retired people playing move your RV. If you want to play by the rules, that goes for all. Let us start with ***** renting out his extra trailer in the past seasons and of course had it set to rent again this year for $300 plus $600 for spot, I am pretty sure that is against Air Force rules as in regulations. ***** and ***** aren't babysitting anyone especially the stalker that was peeping daily at woman sunbathing. So, I am telling everyone beware of strange man white truck parked in the 50s spot, for more info ask *****, ***** or recent new retired personnel in office, watch your family! Everyone has equal rights ! The park is not just for retired. I have no intention of using my wheels to leave, don't have to, have right to be here. Place is great except fr rude unprofessional help. (Editors note: names removed).

The park is easy to access off the interstate. It is not on base but just a short distance away. The full hook-up sites are very nice and look like very easy to get into and out of. They were full so I had to stay in a 30 amp W/E only site (19). I was allowed to pick my own site. Had good water and electric and was able to pull in stations using my antenna. We used and were favorably impressed with the laundry facility. As others stated the centrally used fire pit is nice and you will meet some excellent folks there. Although my site was easy access, in my opinion most of these W/E sites can be difficult to maneuver into because of trees. Other campers advised me there are a lot of trees dropping acorns onto their RV, but only a few dropped on mine in the site I picked. When I arrived I was advised I could check daily to see if anyone was vacating a full-hook up site and I would be number one on the wait list. I was told that there were three of these sites that were scheduled to be vacated the next day but the occupants had until 1130 to let the office know if they wanted to stay and she was expecting at least two of them to extend their stay. Apparently, they are staying there for the season and the manager lets them renew on their last day to stay longer even though the receipt I was given states if there is a waiting list they have to move to another site (common requirement). All three decided to stay. My biggest concern was the central dump site. First, it's location will not allow you to dump as you leave the park because it's on the left side of the road as you to pull into the park. You have to pull back in front of the office through the entrance. Instead of having a "clean-out" pipe sticking up it is a large opening (larger than a toilet bowl) that you stick your hose in to dump and the waste was close to the top and almost full. It has a thin medal lid covering it that is supposed to be bolted down but the bolts are missing. Thus, you slide it out of the way to dump and then slide it back. This setup is very dangerous and a child/pet/adult could fall into the hole. There were some empty sites and dump pipes around the area that could be used but one of the ladies that works in the office was adamant I didn't use those but use the central dump. Don't know why. Again, overall this park is a good place to stay overnight and longer if you can get one of the full hook-up sites or easy access W/E only sites. The base has an excellent commissary and BX as well as other amenities that are impressive. The nearby town of Lexington has a lot of history and really nice shops/restaurants along main street. Diesel fuel in Lexington is way cheaper than nearer the base. Notified wing safety of sewer issue. They advised me later that they visited the site and DR created a work order to fix the dump site to meet required specs for a dumpsite. Future users should hopefully see an improvement soon.

While the campground is a quick train ride to Boston, there is not much to rave about.  The biggest issue I have is the lack of organization in the office.  We knew before calling they don't take reservations, so we called 4 out of 5 days to see what availability there was and if any openings would be coming.  We were looking for a full hookup site and were told each time calling there was nothing open and to call again tomorrow.  We finally had to make reservations at another campground but stopped at Hanscom for two nights since we still needed a place to stay.  I called two hours before we were set to arrive and again was told no full hookup sites were available.  Fine, we could deal without sewer for two days.  When we arrived, we were given the three sites that were open, all water and electric only, and walked over to pick the best one.  When we picked a spot and started walking back with the manager, we found that three full hookup sites were open.  When we asked the manager, he said they must have left and not checked out with the office.  Considering everyone checks in and gives the dates they plan on staying, we could have easily received more information than we did.  Now for the plane noise; its not as bad as say NAS Oceana or any other fighter base, but the air traffic is constant.  Even starting at 7:00 am on Sunday morning.  No matter where in the campground you are, you will hear it and, in some cases, feel it.  Be prepared.  We also had a group of people out at 1:00 am talking three sites down.  I would expect this at any commercial campground and certainly have never experienced this at any military campground, but was shocked when the drunken talking moved further down and continued for about 45 minutes.  We also had people driving by at all hours with thumping stereos.  We expected better behavior from an older crowd.  It does give the impression that the regular seasonal's feel inconvenienced by anyone else showing up at the campground and really don't care how they act. On the plus side, the water, electric and sewer were solid.  Aside from that, we have no reason to return.

Moutainview's review is spot on. Will comment on a few other things. Wifi has been superb. Sometimes it bogs down in late afternoon but they reset and it is 5x5 for the next 24 hours. The staff is superb - they are a great help on getting around the area. It is an easy 20 min drive to the Alewife subway station. Parking there about $7 all day. Easy ride into the heart of Boston. Great facilities and they keep it nice. Nice Commissary and PX nearby. Airfield noise: yep, its there. The runway is right next to the CG. The good news is that it is 99% civilian aircraft: business jet and light prop. I heard 1 military aircraft (a C130) in the 5 days here. It gets real quiet between 2200-0600. We didn't mind the noise. Some people might. We'll be back. Thanks Famcamp staff for a great visit.

Doing the sights in Boston, taking in a Red Sox game, whale watching from Gloucester, eating at Woodsman's in Essex, taking the ferry from Wood's Hole to Martha's Vineyard, AND July 4th with the Boston Pops - you can do it all from this FamCamp! Have been here a few times before in our travels and for this area you cannot find any better! In fact, if you look around, the closest Private Campground to this area is about 25 miles further west from here. Give it a 4 on Value since there is no monthly rate, but I cannot say too many great things for this location and the service that is provided, and they have added WiFi which is a great improvement that ALL FamCamps should impelment. WiFi is better the closer you are to the office but maybe they will put in a repeater sometime to extend better service to the far end of the park. Seniors can ride the "T" for 60cents, just have to get a SR Charlie Card, load $$ in, and remember to not go below $1 before adding more or the card will cancel. We had daughter & granddaughter during July 4th, took the T to Kendall Square, set up on the Cambridge side of river, music from Pops program is right there, and the two fireworks barges are right in front of you -what a great experience! Back at FamCamp before midnight with no problems whatsoever, so don't believe it if you see "horror" stories about attending the 4th celebration. Hanscom AFB and the Hanscom FamCamp folks are 5*****!

We travel to the Boston area to attend doctors appointments. We've been doing this for years. We just this year found out about FAMCAMP. What a find it was. For almost a year now I have been seeing a specialist less then 3 miles from FAMCAMP. Normally we would drive up and back on the same day. That's not bad, but being able to stay at the FAMCAMP makes it so much better. So, our first stay was just last month. It was great. It was quiet, even with the run-way just on the other side of the fence. There weren't many kids, in fact, as far as I can remember, I don't think there were any at all. We slept quite well the entire time we were there, and plan on going back again and again.
Next stop though, 4th Cliff.

Hidden Gem close to Boston and surrounding things to do. Site is actually OFF the base, but you drive through a nice neighborhood to the FamCamp. If you follow the directions on this site it is easy to get to site (be aware that the drive is thru a housing tract and there is a slight left turn where YOU have to stop and allow traffic from the right to turn without stopping. FHU sites with great OTA channels. Was able to camp under the trees. You are next to the runway with Lear jet and personal plane traffic. Little traffic on the base when going there for shopping. Commissary is good and BX is convenient.

M.P. left this review using the Directory software: - Great campground with good size sites. Office staff are very courteous and helpful. Great location for day trips to Boston, Plymouth, Cape Cod and Glouster. Good laundry facilities and showers. Community campfire where quite a few campers gathered at night to tell lies. It is real close to the runway so there is some noise from Gulfstreams and Lear Jets but most are Cessnatype. They allow rig and car washing. The full hook-up sites are in the open with patios so satellite is no problem. Other sites with no sewer are located in trees but the sites are very good. There is a commissary and BX on the other side of the field. We would definitely camp here again.

This is a great stopover to tour New England! Boston is a short drive but I highly suggest driving to the Alewife Station which is appx 7 miles away. The subway is cheap and easy to negotiate. Driving to Newport Rhode Island is easy and worth the drive to see the fantastic Mansions. We toured Gloucester and Salem plus all the little seaside towns between on the scenic highway. The park takes no reservation but don't worry. Ann Marie the manager told me they never had to turn anyone away. During the time we stayed there were quite a few long term residents. They take up most of the FHU. There are plenty of W/E hook ups and a dump. The bathroom had showers which are older but very clean. Decent laundry tho 2 of the dryers were Not working but that is a common problem in most campsites. I would have given 5 stars all the way but there is some trash on the grounds I really blame campers for that. If you arrive when the office is closed or you call n get nobody as they office is closed don't give up there is a bulletin board that has a list of open sites you can pick from. Then you just pay with envelope if you are leaving before they open the next day or just catch the office help the neck day to register. The commissary on base is one of the best ones I have been to. Clean, well stock great variety. Exchange is just average. You really can't beat the location to see New England!
