WARNING!!!Reservations are not honored here. They evidently have a selective reservation list. We made reservations and gave a credit card number to hold the reservation 6 weeks in advance of our arrival. Upon our arrival at 1030 we were told that our reservation had been canceled and they only had one site open for 3 days. (our reservations were for a week). We spoke with the manager and he refused to help. WARNING WARNING WARNING!!! Do not arrive before 1200. The manager refused to allow us to know the site number before 1200 even though we were forced to pay for the site in advance. We have a 37' 5th wheel. I'm oxygen dependent and was forced to sit in the hot truck from 1030 to 1200. We were finally given the site number at 1200 only to find out that the only way to get into the site was to run over tents. There were several sites open that would accommodate our rig without running over tents, but we were refused one of those sites. We demanded a refund and thankfully found a site at Cabin Creek, a civilian RV park. Our experience is not an isolated incident. We spoke to several military people from all branches of the services who had similar experiences with Onslow Beach staff. I thought the recreation facilities were for the benefit of military personnel, not the civilian staff who are contracted to run them.

I agree with all the positives about this campground but being as this was first military campground my reference point is limited. We liked it enough to go back after we visited Navy Rec Area on Lake Moultrie, SC and then headed to MD. As far as negatives, the Marine Officer wrote about the bathroom conditions. What did you do to solve the problem. I am sure you wouldn't look the other way if that was an active duty head. I saw the problem, went to manager, cleaned within (2) hours including the toilet paper spitballs. I am assuming most people using the campgrounds are retired E6-E9 and W1-O6. I wouldn't take crap conditions when I was on active duty E9(NAVY) I sure as hell am not going to take crap conditions from civilians who I pay through my fees. The staff was excellent, the rec office where I got my propane was good and in general the place was nice. As retired senior enlisted and officers it is up to make them accountable if we want nice facilities. I am drafting letter to CO/Rec officer about plus side and negative and tell them to read the reviews on this site. I am going to specifically address what we are giving the camp hosts. NEVER saw them both times I was there. As a minimum they should have telephone line/phone supplied by base and when I check in to office, office calls them, tells what site I am going to and they should be there to offer assistance, little spiel about the base, emergency procedures and answer questions. Otherwise they are useless. Real important to first timer to the location. Remember we are the solution or we are the problem. These campgrounds are good deals compared to commercial ones and I want to keep everyone. Sincerely, NAVYBLUE Spending my kids inheritance one day at a time !!!

Onslow Beach RV Park was clean, the staff was very helpful and the location can't be beat. If you like finding sharks teeth you'll love Onslow Beach. But the best thing was the Marines. We just happened to be at Onslow during an exercise where the Marines were loading tanks and LCDs on LCATS and sending them off shore to join up with Navy LPDs. I was really surprised how close they let us get to the action. I still have sand in my teeth from the one LCATS lift-off from the beach. We also had the opportunity to watch the Marines drive their tanks over the ICW bridge that connects Onslow Beach to the mainland (made me feel better about taking an RV across) as well as V-22 Ospreys landing and taking off. I've never seen an Osprey in the air much less taking off and landing. Who am I kidding, the only M1A1 Abrams or Ospreys I've seen were in photos. I'm married to a sailor, all I've ever seen is Navy stuff. We got great pixs to show the grandboys. OORAH!!! Even if you don't have the good fortune to be at Onslow during and exercise it still a great place. Onslow is a do-over. For those who find it difficult getting a site in this or any other park, I suggest making a reservation, the earlier the better.

As with a previous reviewer, we too had problems with the office staff. We called ahead on a Saturday and were told that, although full on Saturday (no surprise), it would be "wide open" upon our arrival on Sunday. When we did arrive Sunday afternoon, we saw that 8-10 sites were vacant. Upon check-in, we were told to occupy either site 30 or 31, where are in the far rear loop of the campground, adjacent to the bath house. We went back to the office and asked for one of the many empty sites closer to the front of the campground (and thus closer to the beach and facilities). We were told that the only sites available were 30 and 31. We questioned the number of open and apparently available sites, but the office attendant claimed that 30 and 31 were the only two available. We declined and took one of the dry camping sites down the beach instead. The next morning we cruised through the campground and discovered that all the sites that were empty the evening before (when we checked in) were still empty.
We couldn't understand why the staff attendant insisted on misrepresenting the availability of sites, but it ensured that we won't return and will make everyone we know aware of their tactics.

As a retired Marine Officer it pains me to write this review. The recent experience I had at the Onslow Site was not pleasant. The staff workers, though courteous, were part of the problem. They claimed to have no sites available, but the multiple sites empty after closing time were also open in the morning. I was given a site, allowed to set up my RV only to have an office staffer come and tell me that the site I was on was reserved for someone else and I would have to leave the campsite because there was no room for me. They have two camp hosts, one only talks to his group of people and the other you never see. The host at site 13 left a note on his site saying he was off-duty and go see the host at site 15. Funny thing is the host at site 15 left the same note on his site saying to go to site 13. The rest rooms were old and not clean, someone tossed toilet paper on the ceiling and it is still there, black smudges in the showers, and the laundry facilities were not user friendly. The location is awesome, but the facilities and the administration are not on par with the other military campgrounds.

Fantastic site. Not a place to pass up. The office staff couldn't be nicer. Walk along the beach at sun rise is fantastic. The only problem we encountered was that the bridge was being worked on so there was a wait to get over to the site and then off. Great place to come to and relax. We will be back!

Another great visit to Onslow Beach. We came expecting to stay 4 days and stayed 10 even though the weather was not great! As others have said, the location could not be better what with the ocean a very short stroll in one direction and the Inter Coastal Waterway the other and all this for $15, full hookups, including cable! Staff in the office and the hosts could not be nicer. Another great feature that has not been mentioned a lot is that every site has a covered shelter with a picnic table inside (but it can, as earlier mentioned, make some sites tight). Another attraction is that it is very easy to get approval to drive on a part of the beach if you have 4 wheel drive. The game warden will issue you a sticker and at the far end of the rec area there is a beach access point. Dogs are permitted in this area on a leash. We enjoy taking the jeep with our dogs and beach stuff and setting up a place right next to the car on the beach. Usually the beach is almost deserted. Unfortunately, we could not do it this time because the Marines were using it for training. Some observations on the CG: during our visit, we saw no dogs off leash and rarely heard one barking and then, not for long. This is not to counter the other posts but maybe says that the problems identified have been corrected or that we were lucky to have considerate campers while we were there. We like the non-regimented feel of the CG. The rules are clearly stated, common sense, and, during our visit, people observed them without the need for any confrontation. One exception: as noted, speed is not enforced and some child is going to get hit! Government vehicles are just as guilty. I hate them, but this long stretch of road needs some speed bumps. We did not use the bath house so cannot comment on that. We have 2 Verizon phones. The LG phone worked perfect everywhere; the Audiovox barely worked anywhere. When we were last here, they had wifi but now they will rent you a cable modem for $5/day that works very well. There are a lot of wifi hot spots on base if you just want to check email occasionally. One last great thing about Onslow: seeing parents in their RV´s with their Marine who has just returned from war. The car´s have "welcome home" etc., written on them. These Marines sure look young...or is it me that looks old!

I was very dissapointed this time with the host, cleanliness, and dogs barking. I could have sworn we were at the dog pound. When we complained to the host they said they could not do anything about it. The bathrooms were nasty on the weekends. I love this CG because of location to the beach and the intercoastal. Hopefully our next stay will be more enjoyable.

Very convenient to the surrounding Jacksonville area. Very well stocked mini-mart at the usual mini-mart prices. Individuals working there seemed well informed and were very helpful. The RV area is a long way from mainside. About 6 miles. Great Exchange and Commissary at mainside. I saw 3 different gas stations on base and lots of fast food joints. We use Verizon for our cell and internet access. The connection was intermittent at best. The 5mph speed limit in this CG is largely ignored. Could be dangerous for small children.

D.G. left this review using the Directory software: Very nice. Flies were somewhat of a problem. They put up traps, but even with the cold snap, the fly swatter did extra duty. I hope it's not so bad in the summer. 2 Camp Hosts, but I don't know what they did. LP gas available on base at Mainside near Rec Gear issue. Not 100% sure on diesel fuel at the stations, but most likely.

It is out of season and the campground is less that half full. Weather has been mild to quite nice so far. I rated all 5s because I have found nothing to really knock the campground on. I see that others mark down campgrounds because the weather was bad or things that are beyond the campground's ability to control. I hope that I never get that picky. They adjust their policies on length of stay in the off season so you can stay longer than 14 days if they have room. We like this place and I am sure that you will too.

A great place to visit the Atlantic Ocean. As a ex Coast Guardsman I really enjoyed the place. I loved to watch the boats on the inter-coastal water way. The swinging bridge that you have to cross to get to the park is on the waterway and I loved to watched as it let the big and little boats move on the waterway. We walked the beach and drove all over the base. I was proud of the young men and women we met on the base. We were treated with great respect by them and I could not thank them enough for what they are doing. It is a long way to anything though, and watch for the "Tank Crossings." The office people were very nice and helpful and the mini-mart is good for incidentals, however like all these stores the prices are high. The sites are a little tight for big rigs. I think the CG could use a little TLC, but all in all a nice place to stay. MWR needs to get wifi in the park. I think the CG is used enough to afford to do this. We will return if in the area.

Location is GREAT, Great C/G between Ocean and inland water way, Cleanliness had room for improvment however very acceptable, Hospitaliy was great. Amenities is the big question. They get a 5 for the convience of a MINI-Market at the beach saving a 15 mile round trip to the exchange for little things. However their $9.95 charge for wi-fi is hard to swallow. A lot of fishing gear at the store and license available there also. Great fishing from the pier, and inland water side, did not surf fish, but heard it was decent. A fish cleaning station or table would be a BIG plus. Facilities are pretty well maitained during the week, but the weekends are a digrace. Overall value is good as the current rate is higher than I feel it should be, but very competitive, and decent. Overall, a great escape for a week or two to get in some serious R&R. Will return again. They should consider lowering their rates in the off season, they do extend the in and out time from two weeks to 5 months. Cell phone and air card coverage was poor to non-existant half the time. Base has a large commissary and exchange, and the biggest downfall is that it is so far to go anywhere.

First time visitors to Onslow Beach. Definatly a nice out of the way campground on the NC coast. Friendly staff at the reception center and a great little shopette with about anything you may need to pick up. We stayed in the looped section of the campground. The sites there are a tight squeeze if you have a bigger travel trailer or pop up. Most of the sites have shelters over the picnic tables (except the one's in the center of the loop) and all have 30/50 amp service, water and sewer. Bathhouses have nice showers and are cleaned daily except on the weekends. I was told the host was responsible for cleaning them on the weekends but that didn't happen the weekend we were there. And they could use a fresh coat of paint inside. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leashes, but that seems to be a liberal policy as we saw a few dogs outside without leashes. There is a portion of the beach you can take your dog to past the SNCO pavillion, which isn't far away, but you have to transport them in your car to that part of the beach. All said, it was a nice campground and I'd definatly stay there again.

We spend two weeks every year at Onslow Beach, it just keeps getting better and better. The shopette at the CG is great, has everything you need and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We find tons of whale bone and sharks teeth, and this year our teenage daughter even found four sand dollars. The Marine Life Guards are so nice and friendly and make you feel safe in the surf. The camp host Mike is great, always going out of his way to assist with anything you might need. It's a great place to bike ride, watch sail boats, surfers and even dolphins on occassion. There are some great mom and pop seafood restaurants near by, just ask some of the locals for directions. Very much a family friendly CG....we make new friends every year......I could go on and on but you get the picture.......

We have been here several other times and always enjoy our stay. All of the sites have been upgraded to 50 amp and new shelters have been built for the sites that did not have them. The staff is friendly and are always working to keep the campground clean and neat. Lots of fresh paint visible. The sea shelters are very welcome and I have found these only at Onslow so far. We do love the 4th of July with the Marines at Camp LeJeune.

Great campground located right between the inter coastal waterway and the Atlantic. Lots of beach to walk and enjoy. Our site was the first one in on the right side. Nice and level but do not recommend this site if you like to sleep late because it is right next to the building that the employees apparently report to first thing each morning. They start arriving around 6 a.m. and park right outside your rig. They were by no means being rude, but you could certainly hear them coming and going, opening and closing car doors, talking with each other, etc. Other campers we met who were further away down the road had no problem so I don't want to give the impression that the campground is loud - it isn't at all. We really did enjoy our stay there. There was no wi-fi available at the campground but we did find a great spot for reception. There is a library in the continuing education building located by the golf course that has wi-fi and also has an abundance of computers you can use with internet access. We went there 3 times and most times were the only people in the library. Overall this was a great stop and if ever in the area again will certainly stop here.

This was our second stay here. Great staff. There was a problem with the drawbridge over which you must go to enter the campground, and we all had to wait a while for it to be fixed. When it reopened, the line of incoming campers was long, but the staff had the registration process organized to get us all in as quick as possible. Impressive service. Love the beach and intercoastal waterway, good fishing. Our site was level and comfortable. The beach is known for the many shark teeth you can find and my husband found lots of old teeth in many sizes. Camp Lejeune is a great base. The Catholic Church very homey and special. We will always try to stay here as we travel north or south.

Great hidden jewel off of the beaten track. Newish bathhouse with great showers. Lots of boats to watch on the intracoastal. Dogs allowed only in CG, not surrounding recreation areas, and on the beach several miles south of CG.
