Three years ago, vowed we would not return because of the condition of the FAMCAMP. Stopped by to see if things had changed...no such luck. Set up in a site (15) with what appeared to be a recently installed electric box: found no electricity available. Weeds are up to a foot high. Had to pay $30 at Outdoor Rec because there is no one on site. Found out that because there is no one to check on occupancy, some...
Arrived mid-afternoon. We got a hard pad. Plenty of room for dry camping. Many active duty personnel waiting for housing. Most facilities on base look new. No jet noise on weekends :-(
We arrived May 22 and stayed 9 days. Agreed with chiefret90 that Joan, the host, was VERY congenial and helpful. So were the folks at Rec check-in. Enjoyed the area very much -- the Museum of Armament and Technology, the Maturango Museum and, for geology buffs, the Trona Pinnacles, Fossil Falls, and Searle Lake. We, too, highly recommend the site.
Arrived without reservations: no problem as there were many open sites. The folks at Check-in were very cordial and helpful. Entire base seemed to be more modernized than any we've visited before. We compared our experiences at Lemoore with those at Seal Beach to reach our ratings.
Wow!!! Has this place changed. At least 90% of the old WW II buildings have been destroyed. There are newly paved roadways through the most active part of the camp, and the staff is just as friendly and helpful as before. The old mobile home park has been leveled. The 10 new (since 2010) pull-thru sites have 20/30/50/W/S. Most of the older sites appear to be occupied by active duty personnel. In Sept,...
The campground is separated into Pet Friendly and No Pets. The No Pets area has beautiful green grass, whereas the Pet Friendly area needs more water and grass. Best shower experience I've had in 5 years. Shower stall was huge, lots of hooks to hang clothes and towels, and plenty of hot water. Our dogs loved the large area to walk them. Recycling bins is a plus, as most places don't have any.
Went to Gate 2, sign said RV's must be inspected. Pulled into line, Airmen were polite but confused as to why we were coming thru the commercial gate. Told them about the sign, they shrugged, and let us go. FamCamp was down a washboard road. 10 mi speed limit was more than we could handle. Camp is in a small depression -- hills on all sides. Very pleasant surroundings where pronghorn and white tail deer...
Spent four days during the hot spell. Had no power problems. Sites were reasonably separated. We were in the pull-thru expansion area. Host and assistant were very helpful and fun to chat with. We took several day trips into the Black Hills. Received 2 phone calls from the host regarding severe weather. Luckily, severe weather happened at 2300 instead of at 1500 as predicted. Laundry was spotless and reasonably priced. We...
What a fantastic place. So clean, everyone is friendly, free WiFi, free laundry. We're only 10 miles from family. No where else could we find a place this nice, and the price is the best for the area. We'll be here a lot.
If you enjoy boondocking in a wooded environment without neighbors in the immediate vicinity, yet appreciate electric and water, this FamCamp is a great fit. Neighbors are at least 30 feet away; a major mall is within a half mile; folks are generally friendly. You won't find a more pocket book friendly campground in the Anchorage area unless you need to wash more than a couple of loads of laundry each day ($1/load). Roads are dirt: in...
Have been to over a dozen military campgrounds in the past three years. Have found Air Force facilities to be the best. Have visited Vandenberg Famcamp twice. Came back the second time because of our experiences the first time... and there will be more. Arrived Saturday: office closed, but host available and friendly. On Monday stopped by office to get our Famcamp Logbook stamped: was greeted with a great smile, some enjoyable banter, and helpful info. Have 2 GSDs:...
We drove through the campground. Grassy areas, clean and well kept-up. Ditto the comments of Feb 5 - 10, 2010. Great location along the coast. Just across the CA1, is a regional park that charges $30 for full hookups.
We read complaints about traffic noise, but honestly we had more noise in some private resorts. This time of the year it is beautiful here. Billeting was very friendly and helpful. Travel to Paso Robles is 13 miles on 101 where there are lots of shops and wine/olive tasting. Only a short distance to the coast on a beautiful road. We stayed in the new site area. GREAT!!! We will return.
Very nice, quiet, shady rural primitive campground. RE location -- if you hunt, fish or want to get away from everything and enjoy nature, this is a great place. Apparently quite popular with fishermen and hunters, but during our visit, there were only 3 reserve group areas that had occupants. Keep in mind that this site costs the same as Camp Roberts and Camp Roberts has full hookups and is closer to amenities.
