We held a small 3rd Mar Div, Vietnam Veterans Amtracer reunion (Co. B, 4th Plt) there last year. The mobile homes are not fancy, but clean and very close to the beach. The management there was very nice and helpful. Small commissary at the beach. We watched ships anchored offshore loading and unloading amtracs. Will definitely go back there. We stayed in our motorhome, but everyone else had mobile homes (aka cottages). Only one complaint. One of the mobile homes smelled "musty" -- if that happens, please tell the management. (I did) so perhaps they corrected the situation. Enjoy!

The Military Campgrounds Book and the directions from this web site are not real correct.
This web site has you turning right after entering the base off Hwy 24, this is not correct. The Military CG Book directs us thru the hwy 17 gate, their directons are a bit out dated.
From the North, use the main gate (on Hway 24), (not the Hwy 17 Gate, the Hwy 17 gate is for commercial truck traffic). DO NOT turn right after entering the base. Stay on the main road. About 3/4 mile after the first light there is a left hand turn onto Sneads Ferry Rd. Take this road about 6 miles to Beach Road. Caution here, the sign for the turn off is AFTER the turn and on the left side of the street, it is easy to miss it if you are not watching closely. Very poor planning. Beach road will take you right to the C/G area.
The beaches are OPEN all year, but no lifeguards after "the season". As a retiree there is no beach restrictions as to Officer / Enlisted.
Great C/G for some serious R&R. I did a review for more info.

Frank,

Thanks for the corrected driving directions from the North. The directions on the website have been updated. There is an option to "Update Campground Information" on the website. Since I can't visit each military campground myself, I encourage others to submit corrected information.

Logged in website users will find the option to "Submit CG Update" under the CAMPGROUND menu option.

We just returned from our stay at this CG(11/28-12/5/2007). During Nov through March of '08(at least)there is no restriction to time limit of stays. Had we known that in advance, we would have stayed longer-much longer. Very nice, and those sounds of freedom were really neat! Helicopters, tanks, battleships and all sorts of other sights to fill up my camera. The bridge to the beach operates every hour on the half hour and some really nice vessels pass through. The wait if you get 'caught is an 8 min sit. Time your entry and exits. We plan on coming here over and over. The CG is well kept. Bathrooms are cleaned mon-fri. The little store has most impulse items, milk and bread and some spirits(in plastic bottles). Remember to have your base(vehicle)stickers if you plan on coming in from GA 172. Otherwise go to the main gate-off 24 for a visitors pass. The 'mainside' of the base is about 10 miles in. You can find the Exchange and Commissary there. LP is also available on base at the recreation equipment rental bldg. They are closed on Wed.
