We were in Alaska two summers ago (2008) and loved it. We stayed at Fort Richardson, the command has been combined with the AF base. Fort Richardson is the BEST place to stay, if you can get there. We found a waiting list most of the time.

Look under Black Spruce RV Park for Ft Richardson--details are there--also read reviews for Elemendorf famcamp--some campers prefer Richardson--never been to either place--jh

Both are basically located in Downtown Anchorage.

We stayed at both last summer on our 10 week trip to Alaska. Both campgrounds are operating at different locations on the base. The Elmendorf FAMCAMP is more convent to the PX & Commissary, but we liked the Richardson camp (Black Spruce) because it is located in a more wooded area offering more privacy and most sites are pull through. Be sure to call ahead and check as we found Black Spruce was unavailable at one point due to new PCS personnel staying there upon transfer. The only issue we had w/Black Spruce was the laundry, which had 6-7 machines and only one operable.

The base is located on the outskirts of Anchorage, about 4.5 miles from downtown. Freeway takes you right into downtown.

Stayed at ft Richardson , in early June. The new rate is $27 a night. The free laundry has been replaced with pay machines. No Internet. Quite area, nice to stop and rest. Wouldn't plan an extended stay there personally. Need my Internet and tv :(
