Lizard Head Pass Dispersed Camping Area, CO

This US Forest Service dispersed camping area is at Lizard Head Pass (Elev. 10,250') on CO State Hwy 145 about 48 miles north of Dolores, CO. It is a free area, with a 7 day limit. However, I suspect if your rig and campsite is neat and clean and you are not obviously homesteading, you won't be bothered if you push the 7-day limit a little.

This is easily one of the most scenic campsites we've ever stayed in. It was uncrowded even on the Labor Day weekend.

There are NO amenities -- bring everything you're going to need. Even the nearby rest stop/picnic area on the highway has no trash service, probably because if they put a trashcan there, campers in this dispersed area would cram it to over-flowing in short order. There were some, shall we say, "odiferous" porta-johns at the rest area. If you absolutely need to call someone, you can get a Verizon signal at the rest area if you walk around a bit. (The 'sweet spot' moves.)

The road in has a couple of rough spots, the worst of which was about 150 yards from the pavement. We saw several rigs chicken out there, but our 40-footer handled it just fine. In wet weather it looks like a mud bog, but has a firm base and we didn't sink at all.

Highly recommend this spot.
