When I first started using and reporting on military campgrounds and RV Parks, I got confused. I was confused on "Shields RV Park". Well, it's easy to get confused - there's TWO of them and they are both operated by the Navy! There's the Shields RV Park in Corpus Christi, TX and the Shields RV Park in Gulfport, MS. I'm sure there's a reason the Navy has two military campgrounds with the same name. This report and in-depth review is about the Shields RV Park in Gulfport, MS, operated by the Gulfport Naval Construction Battalion Center. And to confuse things even further, this report is about the "new" RV Park located there.
We first visited Shields RV Park (MS) about 7 years ago. At that time, it was the "old" RV Park. There wasnt any room in the RV Park, but we were given overflow parking along the empty streets of an old mobile home park. Over the years, the old RV Park was removed to make room for additional base housing. In the long run, this tured out to be a good thing, as a new RV Park was built in the area where we stayed before. I was very curious to see what they did in creating this "new" Shields RV Park and we visited them in early 2010.

Featured Facility - Barksdale AFB FamCamp, LA |

I retired from Barksdale AFB in 1997, after being assigned there for 5 years. It was interesting to return in early 2010 to see what had changed on the base and the FamCamp. A couple years ago, the famcamp had some improvements done to it that I wanted to see. If you've never been here before, finding the famcamp could seem a bit challenging. But it's not that hard. The driving directions posted here take you through the industrial gate, which is easily maneavered by RV's. Don't attempt to take any other gate, as you'll have difficulties getting through and you'll be on the other side of the base from the famcamp. The Barksdale AFB FamCamp is located in a wooded area of the base, with the operational portin of the base a few miles away. The flightline is between the two. You take the perimiter road to get around the flightline. Much of this is eliminated by following the posted driving directions.
In the same area as the famcamp is the day use and picnic areas, hunting area, base housing, the equestrian area, lakes, swamps, and miles of wilderness. Lots of room for bike riding and exploring. There is also a shopette not far from the famcamp in the base housing area. Driving through the area and main base brought back many memories.
