Personally I am not familiar with any of them. I guess you don't have the fam camp book or the disk from the group here. They both will list all the camps along your travels...

Good luck to you

I do have the fam camp book and check the ratings here regularly. ;) I was looking for anyone with personal experience at any of those camps. ???

OP asked for "...suggestions for "don't miss" military campgrounds..."

I did that not knowing if they had the books or had looked at the lists from the forum. Trying to help. Unfortunately I can be of no help like I originally said I seem to travel more along major highways that are not always anywhere near military bases. In ten years of rving across the US I have only been near a military base four times.

We are in Oregon right now, taking a trip down Hwy 101 along the coast. We haven't stayed in either of the two military campgrounds in Oregon. We have been staying in State Parks for the most part and they seem to be a pretty good deal. Most have water/electric hook-ups and some have sewer with prices ranging from $16-22 a night. People (Oregoneans?) have told us that the best scenery along the coast is between Newport and Florence and so far we agree with that assesment. At Newport we stayed at South Beach SP w/e for $22 a night - a great park with lots to see and 2 lighthouses in the area worth touring. At Reedsport/Winchester Bay we stayed at William Tugman SP with w/e for $16 a night. Another lighthouse and the small town of Winchester Bay was worth a visit. At Port Orford we stayed at Cape Blanco SP with w/e for $16 a night. Another lighthouse at a pretty neat Coast Guard Museum (free) in Port Orford. If you just need a quick overnight place to park, the casino at Florence and casino at Coos Bay will let you spend the night in their parking lot - were actually pretty decent with security and free coffee in the morning. Right now we are at Harris Beach SP in Brookings with w/e/s for $21 a night. It's just a short drive to the Redwoods in CA. We are heading to Washington next and plan on staying at some military parks.

I would say that a "don't miss" place is the beach accessed from the Pacific Beach Navy rv park on the central Washington coast. The park itself is nothing to write home about, just a convenient place to stay for a few days. But the beach is great.
Cape Flattery is on the far north west corner of the Olympic Peninsula north of the Pacific Beach cg. That's a "not to be missed" site. It's on an Indian reservation, so you have to stop and buy a recreation pass, it's well worth the trip and the cost of the pass. Stop at one of the smoke shacks and buy some fresh smoked salmon. Outstanding!

I used to go to Camp Rilea on the Oregon coast all the time when I had my 5er. Haven't been in a couple of years, but heard they had upgraded the RV park. While its on the coast, the RV park is away from the beach, with walking access, but no view. Nice quiet place to stay and you are centrally located. We used it as a jumping off point for touring Seaside and especially Cannon Beach. Ft Stevens is just a couple of miles away and Astoria is a nice place for good restaurants.

We also go to Pacific Beach Conference Center, WA a lot, nice RV park on the bluff overlooking the Ocean. Very small town with not much to do, except walk/drive on the beach, which is exactly the way the wife and I like it. They have a reasonable restaurant, bowling alley, spa, etc.

An out of the way place is the Coast Guard Station Campground at Westport WA. Close to the ocean, but remote from the base and seldom used. Just some spaces in the trees behind a locked gate, W&E, but nice and private and quiet. Used to be only $5 a night, so the price is right.

I have a trip to Jim Creek Recreation area planned for August. have never been, but its a neat looking place. Nice web site and looks like a great place, so investigate that.

The WA and OR state parks are excellent. I think OR offers a discount for DAV, but not sure of exact requirement, check out their web site. WA does, but you have to be a WA resident. I stay at the respective SP in both states 90% of the time, either that or military, so my knowledge of commercial sites is not too great.

Take a look at lotsastuff.tommymartin.info I leave reports from my camping trips here in the NW there whenever we get back. Lots of SP ecommendations

suggestions for "don't miss" military campgrounds as well as private campgrounds.
This is a caption from LK23's first post on this thread. I too am planning a trip to the NW next year and would like to know any of the above sites. UTMTMAN all you done is quote the military campgrounds from this site. That is no help as we can look them up. What we or should I say I want to know is your personal "don't miss" places or routes to take and use. I hope I have not offended anyone but that is what I wanted to know and I think that is what LK23 wanted to know in the original post.

I realize you posted this 6 months ago but I have a suggestion for you. If you can, make sure you visit Jim Creek NAS in Washington. It's small, unique, and has an old growth forest that is positively primeval. Its a good idea to make reservations, especially if you plan to be there over a weekend. It tends to be wet (rainy) and there are practically no services. The station is literally at the "end of the road".
Another great place is Silver Fall's State Park, also in Washington. Rain forest type park with developed sites. As you can tell, we love trees and greenery.
In Oregon, do Crater Lake Natl Park but stay down on the Rogue River at some of the parks there. Union Creek is all dry camping and small, truck camping mostly. Farewell Bend is for larger rigs. If you want developed w/elec, Joseph Stewart State Park is just down Highway 62.
Regards
Bill and Carole
