Firearms base policies

I travel as much as I can Stopping and Camping on Military bases if one is near. I live in a travel trailer 29' toyhauler with a rhino inside. I carry varmit rifles and target hand guns in my home, I have a legal carry permit. Does any body know if policies are the same all over or is each base different, like the united states? I have gotten permission to ride my rhino on some bases, no guns on board.

Almost every military base we've been on (camped on) requires all private firearms be checked in with the security police/armory. It's no problem, just a bit of a hassle to take your weapons to the armory and get a receipt. This is the main rule for almost all bases. Some have said "no weapons at all". Of course, there are also a few exceptions if you have a hunting permit for on base.

When you take your weapons to the armory, be sure they are unloaded, chamber open, and they don't want your ammo. Oh yea, don't forget to pick them up when you leave! :)

Andrews AFB was pretty strict on the weapons. They gave us 30 minutes to get to the armory from the gate. They called the armory that we were coming. What was funny, we checked out our weapon a week later and there was no control after check out. It was even a day President Bush landed in Marine One to board Air Force One.

Is it true that some bases have x-ray or some other sensor to detect explosives and/or firearms? I'd hate to have my firearm hidden somewhere in my coach and have them find it after not declaring it.

We find that it varies. We also find that some of the gate security personnel do not really know the regs themselves.

For example, at Ft. Sam Houston, TX, the reg is if you're there more than 72 hours, you're supposed to register it. Other bases (whose names escape me) have required immediate transport to a designated arms room.

I really think that most base commanders (or their staffs) make their own policy on this subject.

This is off the cuff and who knows, it may not always work. I talked with a senior NIS agent some time ago about Fire Arms on Military bases. The agent told me that if you have a safe mounted in your rig it takes some serious probable cause for them to get into it. No one has ever found my safe much less asked to look in it.

Great plan! Let's lie to military security rather than follow the rules...

That should insure that military campgrounds stay open and available to retired service members.
