I bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4Wd to tow behind my class A. So far I have been told to tow it 4 wheels down, 2 wheels down and put it on a trailer... I bought the tow bar and put the pieces on the frame to tow it. BUT now I am confused how to tow.. Transfer case in neutral and it looks like the key needs to be on to unlock the steering wheel????
OK I need help.

Your manual will have the proper "RV Towing" procedure.

Normally, the transfer case in neutral, the transmission in gear (or park). I thought the new Jeeps didn't lock the steering wheel (my 2011 GC doesn't).

But check the manual, as I'm not familiar with new Jeeps. For example, not all Jeep Grand Cherokee's can be towed 4 down. On the GC, you need to have the "Quadra Trac II" or Quadra Drive II" 4WD system. The "Quadra Trac I" system can't be towed 4 down. My salesman didn't even know this!

The manual leaves a lot of questions for towing. I have been to 2 jeep dealers and 2 Camping World stores. I bought the new wrangler to make towing easy. $1600.00 later and I am still lost for answers. I thought maybe someone out there had a wrangler and towed it would give me some advice. I raced mustang in the 60's and 70's and towed them everwhere.
Thanks for your input....

We just bought another Liberty: a 2012. The manual was very specific with the towing instructions. Yous should be the same... Transfer case in neutral, shift in Park (if automatic) and, in our case, key removed.

The key only has to be in the run position IF that is required to unlock the steering. It was required in our 2007 but not in our 2012. The 2012 steering is unlocked without the key being on. To double-check; see if you can turn the steering without the key; it's hard but doable.

Thanks for the info. Like I said my manual doesn't say a lot about towing. I thought camping world would have more on the jeep. They sold me everything to put on the jeep, even the tow bar.
I'll see if the wheel is locked this morning....

You probably already know this but just in case I will say it anyway. The manual has a section on TOWING that pertains to what you can tow behind the vehicle you bought and a section on RECREATIONAL TOWING that will explain on how to tow the vehicle you bought behind a recreational vehicle. The following is from the Motorhome Mag supplement 2012 Guide to Dinghy Towing for a 2012 Jeep Wrangler 4WD and the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4WD so here goes "with engine off, press brake pedal, shift automatic transmission into neutral or press clutch pedal on manual transmission, shift transfer case level into neutral, start engine, shift automatic transmission into drive or manual transmission into gear, release brake pedal, and turn engine off. Hope this helps and from recent experience looking at 2012 and 2013 models of numerous SUV's salepeople are not educated on towing vehicles behind an RV so it can be very frustrating. We learned real quick any dealership we go to we ask for the person who knows the most about towing behind an RV. Good luck Ernie T.
