Flying J's RV discount program

I found out by accident when I went into purchase $$250.00 worth of diesel and found out that I had to purchase at least $10.00 in food or merchandise from Flying J to get the .01cent discount on diesel fuel/gal. or .03cent/gal of gasoline. If you just go in and purchase diesel or gas you get nothing now. This started on 1, Feb. 08. I see no reason other than the diesel is always fresh to buy from Flying J anymore. I never dump there either. What are your feelings about this? >:( :(

I have gas - I mean my "rig" has gas. ::) Personally, I've never liked Flying J for various reasons.

This has been boucing around the net all month. Its kinda a bummer but like they say they dont make no money off of their gas sales and make a heck of a lot more off of sales in the store and restaurant. Your purchases still build up like before for purchases. Read about those different purchase amounts and discounts here. www.flyingj.com/programs/rvclub.cfm

We still received the $.01 off each gallon RV discount on 2/15/08 but since then we have not received it. We always use the Truck side to get diesel with our Flying J card and then get the $.06 off each gallon. Most times their prices are the best you can find in any truck stops as we usually travel along I10, I75 or I95. When we asked about the $.01 off each gallon no longer applying we were told it was included in the $.06 off each gallon. Not true as we got $.06 off each gallon and the $.01 off each gallon RV discount before for a total of $.07 off each gallon. Too bad Wal*Mart fuel stations cannot accomodate our 45' motorhome as we find their prices are the lowest of anyone. We do carry a couple 5 gallon diesel cans with us as we travel and fill them at a Wal*Mart and then dump them in the motorhome while at the campground. Does not accomplish much with a 150 gallon fuel tank but it makes us feel like we are not giving OPEC more than we have to.

Always find it interesting that gas stations "claim" they don't make much money off the gas -- Not only interesting, but extremely hard to believe. What kind of business is a gas station ??

And, I'm sure the station makes more off the restaurant and the sales of items -- but I remember a friend of mine had a small-town gas station combo country-store in rural California -- he told me the only thing that kept him in business was the profit from the gas sales, and that the store was only so he could get people to come and buy gas when they stopped on the way home for a six-pack or bread, no one wants to make a trip to the big grocery stores ... Probably true too, (why would he lie to me??) but I can remember seeing items on his shelves (canned goods and boxed products) so old they had dust on them ...

He said beer and gas made him his money ... the rest was a break-even sort of just to get the people to stop in ...

Not sure about other states, but here in Oklahoma there is a state law that REQUIRES all fuel retailers to sell at a minimum of 6 cents above what they pay for the fuel. Due to the high cost of fuel these days almost all the stations only use that mandeated 6 cent markup. They've got to sell a lot of fuel at 6 cents a gallon profit to make a living. Prices today in the north Oklahoma City are $2.99 for regular gasoline and $3.80 for diesel. Not sure what the Flying J was charging since the nearest one is out on west I-40 and I have not been out that way for awhile.
