If a retired service member should pass on before his wife will she still be able to continue health care coverage with TRICARE? With all the news going on with health care my wife asked me that question and I didn't know the answer.
I recently got my TRICARE renewal statement and it did not give me the option of paying for a full year like I have done in the past. Is that because some of the regions will be changing providers?

I was able to get part of my questions answered yesterday. My wifes ID card expired last month so we decided to go to FT Jackson in Columbia SC to get it renewed. I asked the question to the clerk and found out that a widow has to take a copy of the death certificate to them and get a new ID. She would become her own sponsor and still use husbands SSAN. Somewhere in this thread someone mentioned the need to get a new ID card when service member turns 65. I wasn't sure what that meant since my ID card ( on the front ) ahd indefinate for expiration. The clerk at Ft Jackson pointed out the expiration date on the back of my ID card which coicides with when I turn 65. I will have to return next year and get a new ID after I get my medicare card. This will set me up for TCFL coverage. I'm glad thats all clear now.

You said that the statement didn't give you the option to renew for a full year. You must be turning 65 during the year. If that is the case, then that is why you didn't get that option. Otherwise I would call tricare and ask them.

yes, I will turn 65 next June. However the wife has three more years to go. Will we get a reduced premium for her after I go on TCFL?

That is the reason you didn't get the option to renew for a full year. Once you turn 65,you don't pay for TFL. You pay for Medicare instead.

Bill,

Now I'm confused. What payment are we talking about for TriCare? I've been on TriCare for awhile now and my wife has moved to TFL. I've never had to pay anything for TriCare. The wife does have to pay for Part B Medicare but we have never paid anything to TriCare. I should mention that we have always used TriCare Standard since I refuse to use an HMO type program that TriCare Prime required.
