We just spent five days at San Onofre. Beautiful location! Check in was quick and easy. We had a reservation, good thing, too. The campground was at full capacity. We parked in #3, a full hook-up spot with tall bushes on each side, giving us a sense of privacy, and plenty of room behind the rig for the picnic table and fire ring. Great view of the ocean, very close to the beach. Only downside is at low tide, the beach is very rocky, not exactly a "wading" beach where one may walk in the surf. Commissary, exchange, gas station close by for those incidentals left at home and refueling (diesel available, too) at lower cost than off base. Somewhat remote, not really close to either San Diego or Los Angeles, but a great getaway!

Thanks for the info.

Why not post a rating and review of your stay on the campground's information page? Just go to San Onefre's infomration page and click on the "Write review" link, which is next to the current overall rating.

As an addition to the previous post, the Southern California coast is very rock as Newbie noted. Having dammed all of the rivers draining into the ocean has stopped the silt/sand that used to cover the beaches.

San Onofre was a very nice respite, and it was reasonably quiet. When several of the sites had large numbers of ice chests and many young people, we expected lots of parties. Every one was subdued, and we had a good time.
