San Mateo Campground at San Onofre Beach CA

Has anyone stayed at San Mateo campground? Near Camp Pendleton. Saw a couple reviews online generic search and they were NOT favorable. Meeting up with 2 other campers there 9/28 and was thinking I may need a back up plan campground near there in case I have to relocate.
New to the forum. Was in the Navy for 12 years and am now a DOD employee working for the Navy at 32nd Street NAVSTA. Hoping to do more camping soon.

We stayed there for a few days some 6 years ago. No sewer hookups. I can't remember much about the experience but I do recall that I wasn't impressed much. As I recall it was quite a walk to the beach. We're staying there for three days next week to visit our daughter who lives in Laguna Niguel. If it wasn't the closest campground to her we wouldn't be staying there.
