I think you will be able to get a good idea of the area from the ft Sam Houston campground on Canyon Lake. A new va hospital is also going up in Austin. Check the campground at Camp Mabry.

Pls visit Ft. Clark, TX. before you decide on settling down. It's on the road from S.A. to Laredo (the hwy number escapes me now). It's in Bracketville, TX. a small town midway between Uvalde and Laredo. Close enough to S.A. for medical attention according to the residents we spoke to. It's a beautiful old US Army calvary post, entirely a US National Historical Registry deal, but turned private. (it has its own website too) It has everything you can imagine including the nicest section for RV "ports", as you called them. There's a RV park and a big full-sized home, residential section too.
