During our recent 12 day stay at the Pelican Roost RV Park at Naval Station, Mayport, FL we drove over to Osprey Cove for a look see. We were not very impressed with the place. If you have to be in the Jacksonville Beach area for some sort of extended stay than this campground is of great benefit to you as an RVer because of the security it offers you and at $13.00 a day for a FHU it is a tremendous bargain. Thats where the good things end. The campground is isolated from the rest of the base and not within reasonable walking distance to anything. To get there you have to drive through base housing. The Navy Exchange and commissary are located off base so you have to leave the base for any major shopping. You must obtain paper ID cards from the pass office for all guests staying overnight unless they have a military ID card. At the entrance to the campground is a large youth activities building that is very active during holidays and weekends. There is a 28 day minimum stay limit in effect and at present there are no facilities so your rig has to be a FHU rig. Almost all sites are under heavy tree cover making it very difficult to get a good satellite TV signal. We saw many tripods in central locations. The sites are large and for the most part the campground was clean and well kept. However, those that have been there for awhile were showing signs commonly seen at campgrounds allowing homesteaders, especially those with small children.

QUOTe "... a twenty-eight day MINIMUM stay."

Now that' really strange, to have a minimum stay. Seem to me odd that you can't leave when you want, and open a sapce for another RV.

This is their reasoning.
Osprey cove is an old trailer park that is only accessable by going thru base housing. Since it is the second RV park at Mayport, they want to cut down on the amount of RV's going in and out of housing, thus the 28 day minimum.
They did have plans for a clubhouse and laundry to be installed over there, but this was before they got the word that they (Mayport) was going to get a nuclear Carrier stationed there. Now they have to do a LOT of work at the piers and support buildings, and harbor dredging and remodeling to make the arangments for a nuclear carrier and its support staffs, ships, crews and people etc. They have already told Pelican Roost that they would more than likley be closed. If they need the room at Osprey Cove for housing then we can kiss that one good by also.
