An e-mail was sent to members that included the following:

China Lake, CA - Another reader sent me an email stating in the 1970's he "... Spent a little time at China Lake Naval Weapons Station In California. MWR at that time had some cabins and I believe some campsites on the North Range just south of Lone Pine, CA." Much can change in the past 30 years, but does anyone know if China Lake still has these recreation facilities?

I have a good friend who lives in Ridgecrest and is retired from China Lake. He sent me the following response to the above question:

Yes, MWR is still alive and well at China Lake. Their primary activities are supervising the gym, golf course, pool and bowling alley. I would guess the cabin reference was to some buildings that used to exist at the Coso Hot Springs. That area was closed off to the public many years ago as a security measure. The only access to some of that area now is guided tours of the Petroglyph areas, through the Maturango Museum.
