This is our 3rd visit in 9 years of using military RV campgrounds. Other than the complete lack of internet support (one phone connection for dial-up) this facility is hard to beat. There is even a veterinarian service on base, with prices that can't be beat, including pet chipping. For one of the most complete and informative ways to see San Antonio we suggest you start by parking in the gated self-parking lot ($6.00) at the base of The Tower of the Americas. You can then begin your tour by riding the elevator to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view of the entire San Antonio area. There is also a special 4-D theater there in The Tower and a restaurant. Next, via a short walk through the grounds of the Convention Center and you'll be on the River Walk. A short walk there will take you to the Rivercenter Mall where you can listen to outdoor entertainment, have lunch at the food court, and or view an IMAX movie about the Alamo "The Price of Freedom". The Alamo itself is about 200 feet away, so you can tour the Alamo and other nearby attractions such as Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum. Upon your return to the River Walk, you can opt to take the a guided boat tour of the River Walk, then after your day of fun and adventure, return to the Tower of the America's parking lot via the same route you came in on. A quick way to get to the Tower is to go out the Walters Street Gate (the one near the commissary). Take Walters Street to Commerce Street, turn right on Commerce and when you get near the center of town take a left on Bowie Street. One block away, take a left on Market Street and stay to the far right on Market Street following it around to the parking lot for the Tower of Americas. A word of caution! If you do not stay to the far right on Market Street, you will end up on the I-35 ramp and then up onto I-35 and you will have to find your way back down town to the Tower.
