We just spent a week at Great Pond Military Recreation Area in Maine. There are a number of cabins and campsites at the facility. I thought I'd share my view of the campground. We camped in a Motorhome. Great Pond is very isolated in a heavily wooded environment. That could be a plus or a minus depending on your perspective. First the positives. The staff was very pleasant. The lodge was very nice and equipped with satellite TV, a wood burning stove and a massive fireplace as well as a pool table and other rec gear. The lake was large and although we didn't fish, I was told the fishing was excellent. Small boat and motor rental was very reasonable at $30 a day. Use of bikes was free. In my view the negatives were: The camp sites had only water and 30 amp electric, yet they charged $20 a night plus $5 a night additional for a pet. Twenty five dollars a night is the most I've ever paid in a military campground, especially one without full hook ups. The pet fee really was a big negative for me. I've never paid a pet fee in five years of camping. The refund policy was also a negative for me. I had a reservation for seven days, but upon arrival and seeing the remoteness of the campground, attempted to change my stay to five days. I was told I'd have to pay for the entire seven. The bath house was in below average condition and not cleaned daily. The nicely appointed lodge closed at 6 p.m. each day. There were never more than two campers all week. I read many positive reviews of this campground here but we won't be back.
