Weather Information

Pililaau Army Recreation Center (PARC) located on the Pokai Bay and is one of the best beach facilities on the island. It captures the essence of “old Hawaii” with beachfront property surrounded by rustic farms and homes. PARC is located just 35 miles from Waikiki and 18 miles from Schofield Barracks, on the beautiful Leeward Coast. The gentle waves and white sand beaches delight swimmers, snorkelers and scuba enthusiasts.

PARC is comprised of 42 beach cabins, one distinguished visitor cabin, an equipment rental center, club facility and cove pavilion area for group outings. All cabins are air conditioned, with ceiling fans, cable TV and telephone. The kitchens are equipped with cooking utensils, tableware, dishes and linen, a private sundeck and barbecue grill.

Stopped by to view the beach and cottages. I updated the information on this site and uploaded several new photos. This recreation area is located about 45 minutes from Honolulu, but that makes the location quieter than near the city. Getting there is pretty easy. The beach was a bit busy, but the cottages looked quiet and relaxing. The Beach House dining facility was also pretty busy. Looking at the menu, there's a good selection of meals and much more affordable than in Honolulu. Most of the cottages looked like they were recently renovated, but there's still some older ones. The cottages are really close to the beach, but not all have their own beach front. This looks like a great place to enjoy Hawaii, relax, and enjoy the private beach. Just be sure to make your reservations well in advance.

Stayed here with my wife, son and daughter-in-law mid July 2022. We had one of the renovated 2 bedroom cottages which we immediately decided was an excellent choice for out vacation. I have stayed at the Marine Corps Base cottages on K-Bay and will have a difficult time deciding which I prefer. PARC is more on the water, had better kitchen utensils. was newer and the central air was a big plus in July even with the ocean breezes. PARC is further away from almost all sites we wished to visit by about 20-25 minutes one way so you spend an extra 40 to 50 minutes travelling. But this is made up for by the scenery along the Farmington Highway - ocean on one side and mountains on the other. MCBH has 2 bedroom cottages also, cost about 20 bucks a night more, are closer to tourist sites/activities, and are well spaced apart and on the Pacific shore but minimal beach access. Overall I would give PARC 97 out of !00 and MCBH 96 out of 100 scores,

Stayed at the Waianae Hale, which is the 'O-6' accommodation at the Center. The place is run down and neglected. The mechanisms for almost all the louver windows are broken and the windows are not secure. The window screens are either non-existent or have big gaps or holes in them. With broken windows and no screens, the bedroom was a cockroach highway. Sleep was difficult, as cockroaches and other bugs crawled under the covers at night. You are either awakened by them or wake up with crushed cockroach parts (from when you rolled over and killed them in your sleep). With broken windows and no screens, the bedroom was a cockroach highway. A really disgusting experience and we checked out early without sleeping there another night. Did they express any concern or offer a refund for the night we didn't stay there? No. Is there a plus to this place? The beach is absolutely beautiful and they are in the process of renovating some of the units. Be sure to ask for a renovated one if you decide to stay here.

My wife and I throughly enjoyed our time at Pililaau (PARC). The front desk staff were great, accommodating, and friendly. The facilities could use a bit of attention to maintenance, but were satisfactory in general. We started out in a "studio" which was very oddly arranged—totally inefficient use of the space. Our last night we moved into a two-bed unit which was contained in the same size sq ft space as the studio, but laid out much more efficiently. It is well suited for those stationed on Oahu who can bring their own food and supplies. The beds were only marginal as far as comfort goes, and as others have noted the kitchens did not have a lot of dishes/utensils. The Army seems to be letting the sea wall go by not repairing broken sections. But as far as we are concerned any negatives were outweighed by the positives—picturesque location, slower pace of life, access to local services, convince to the Norrh Shore and southern island locations, etc. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area and highly recommend the family-run Coquito's Latin Cuisine Restaurant a short walk from the front gate. This was our first time on the leeward side of Oahu and we will return to this peaceful location far away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

The cabins have been remolded and are nice. Unfortunately they are sparsely furnished, no dresser or even shelves to unpack suitcase. The kitchen utensils are even more sparse. No coffee pot until I asked the front desk about it & they said I had to come to the office & "sign" for it. I suspect that they have a theft problem. The location , as the map indicates, is the far west end of the island, the most poverty stricken area of Oahu. We would return, but only as in this case, we were unable to get reservations at Bellows AFB for the full time we're in Hawaii. The staff is very friendly & helpful.

Wife and I stayed in a studio unit prior to going on a day cruise there. The place is nice. It's about a 40 minute drive from the airport. Staff are very friendly. The studio unit is set up a little weird but it works. They are working on the sea wall right in front of the unit we were in. They have security 24 hours a day. We will go back.
