Planning a trip on the Alaska Highway from Orlando, Florida to
Joint Base Elmendorf/Richardson FamCamp. Interested in anyone who has done this trip, especially where to buy Diesel (tank limited to 26 gals. Will take extra plastic containers) and places with RV parks to shower along the way. Thanks in advance.

Did an Alaskan trip for 4 months last year. Diesel is plentiful, as are RV parks. Traveling to and within Alaska (on the highways) is the same as traveling in the lower 48. Plan to purchase the "MilePost" book, but wait until you're ready to go (it's updated each year). This book lists all of the scenic, historical spots, RV Parks, fuel locations, etc. along all the different routes. With it, you can plan your next stop for fuel and rest.

Don't listen to the "horror" stories. The trip may be long, but it's scenic and easy to do. We took a 40' motorhome to almost every corner of Alaska that you can drive to. Take your time and enjoy the trip!

We did the trip in 2012 and I would second everything Larry said and would add that in addition to the "Milepost", get the book: Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping: Alaska and Yukon Camping With RV or Tent by Mike & Terri Church ( ) You need to keep in mind that the businesses mentioned in the "MilePost" write their own entries. We found the comments and evaluations on RV parks done by the Church's to be more objective.

Have fun, it is a fantastic trip! Feel free to PM me if you would like recommendations or have questions.

Larry, we are leaving YPG in April this coming year 2017 and heading up to Alaska for the third trip. Did you by chance do a blog on your trip? If so I would like to read it if possible. I would like to go up the coast from Washington to wherever in Alaska and then continue into Alaska. I don't know if it is possible but if you know of a way let me know. Then I plan to come back through SD or something like than late in the year to go to Mo. for medical appointments. Plan to be in Alaska as long as the weather allows. Thanks for the reply

Bill,

On our trip we went up the Alaska Highway, but on our return trip we went on the Cassiar Highway through British Columbia. It was gorgeous, possibly more so than Alaska: the forests are nicer, although the mountains are not quite as impressive as those in Alaska.

Take Canada #1 from Vancouver to Cache Creek, BC; then follow #97 to Prince George; then #16 to Kitwanga and finally #37 to Upper Laird and you are back on the Alaska Highway. Consider a side trip SE to Hyder, AK and Stewart, BC for a trip up to the Salmon Glacier (assuming you have a toad) where you can look down on the glacier.

Good luck! Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Here's our BLOG for our Alaskan trip in 2015 . It's not the greatest, but it talks about our route, expenses, and what we saw/did.
