Heading to New Orleans

Now that the holidays are over, we are getting ready to leave Pensacola area and will be going to Biloxi and then to New Orleans, before heading down the Texas coast. Any comments on Keesler FamCamp or Shields RV Park? How is Magnolia Shade? I know it will be closing soon. Thanks for any responses.

We traveled to Escapees in Livingston, TX to finalize our domicile in June. We stayed both at Keesler and Shields. We avoided New Orleans because of the location of the Magnolia Shade.

We found Keesler to be very nice and comfortable. There is some traffic to get through to get there but not bad.

Shields was an ok place. They are building a new campground that is on the site of the original one. The current campground is the old FEMA park following Katrina. That being said, this campground is dusty but tolerable. The staff is great and there is free wifi with a strong signal. Also, the washers and dryers are free as well.

For a stay of a day or two, Shields is a good option. Until the new campground opens, the staff have made the best of a bad situation.

We took I-12 and avoided New Orleans altogether. On I-12, we stayed at Frog City RV Park which proved to be very adequate stop right off the interstate. Once again the staff was great and it had free wifi. The website for Frog City is www.lafayettervpark.com/travel.html .

Have to agree about Frog City in Duson, LA. This is about 10 miles west of Lafayette. Nice place for a day or two stop over, right off the interstate. If you are a member of Passport America you can stay for half price. Also, in Duson is a fantastic restaurant called Thibadues. Little hole in the wall place with great food.

We stayed at Frog City about a year ago. To get into the site they put us in right by the office, the host sent us back around via the next in-park road where we could not make the right turn at the end due to the very narrow roads AND that corner being designed for no right turns. :- We had to unhook the toad to get around the corner with multiple back and forth movements, then found we probably could not have got into the site with the toad attached anyway due to the utilities hookups being right at the pavement. We had low voltage problems (even when trying to use just the 30a plug) to the point that we finally had to give up on running the ac, microwave or coffee pot (even one of those by itself would crash the voltage). The park staff was very helpful to a point, but did eventually admit they knew the wiring was inadequate due to having too long a run to that site. ??? The best part was it didn't cost much due to Passport America, AND we were staying only one night. We might stay there again, but would be a lot more careful about the site assigned.

We have stayed at Frog City on three different occasions and had a great time. The first time we were there we were part of a seven coach caravan on it's way to Florida. We thought this was a great place to stay.
