Shaw AFB is actually about 45 minutes away in Columbia. Wateree is right on the lake, about 20-30 minutes outside of Camden. Though there are several signs that the area is only for military access, local townsfolk came and used the beach and bathrooms frequently. Staff was lovely, though they could not keep up with the whole park, the bathrooms were not cleaned very often, and the park was in a state of disrepair. The entire time we were there, the bathrooms only had TP, soap, and paper towels on a few weekends. Laundry room had 3 washers and dryers. All spots were concrete pads. Cabins available for rent. Tent area wasn't clearly defined and lots of tent campers just set up wherever they wanted. Small area off the side of the boat launch was designated for dog swimming and our dogs loved it. The human swimming area had a sand beach with volleyball court. Don't come to Camden if you're looking for a variety of good food options. There were only a few quality restaurants. Grocery store was mediocre. We were able to get packages sent to the front office and they texted us when we had one. The lake was absolutely gorgeous though. Lots of fishers, some boaters were disrespectful of the no wake zone, but a great place to paddleboard. Boats and paddle craft could be rented from the MWR. ****Be aware that there is limited cell service. Starlink was very slow, and T-Mobile did not work. Neighbors with AT&T had ok service.****
