Gateway FamCamp

Malmstrom AFB is located near Great Falls, Montana. Although only listed as a single FamCamp, they actually have two separate FamCamps there. Gateway FamCamp is their newest and their main FamCamp, located off-base a couple blocks from the base main gate. On base, they also have the original FamCamp, known as The Annex. Although we stayed 5 nights at the Gateway FamCamp, we made a couple visits to The Annex.

Gateway FamCamp

We had a little problem finding the Gateway FamCamp, as the directions we had were not correct. That problem has been resolved - the directions on the website are now precise. The FamCamp is actually easy to find, if you follow the corrected directions. We arrived around 1400hrs in June and were lucky to get the last site, so we were told. Unfortunately, the host didn't have current records and the site was already occupied. The FamCamp was full. He apologized and offered us to spend the night in the parking lot or go to the Annex FamCamp on base. We drove over to the Annex to check it out and decided to spend the night in the parking lot at the Gateway FamCamp for the night. A couple other RV's came in latter and also stayed for the night in "overflow". It wll worked out fine for us and we moved into a FHU site the next day. The host doesn't take payment. Payment is made via an envelope deposited into an fee tube. Since we had already paid for 5 nights in a FHU site, we arranged with the host to stay 5 nights in the FHU site, in addition to the night on overflow.

The Annex

Gateway FamCamp is well taken care of. The host takes pride in the RV Park and it shows. They don't take reservations and the FamCamp is full almost every night during the summer. I suggest arriving by 1300hrs to increase your chances of getting a site. But even if they are full, you can stay in overflow (the parking lot) or go to the Annex FamCamp. I was told the Annex is never full. The Annex had over a dozen open sites every time we went there. Both FamCamps are quiet, as there's no plane activity on Malmstrom AFB. It's now a Minuteman Missile support base with a few helicopters. The base was in great shape, but with almost no activity. It almost seemed like the base was closed all week. The base has a nice mid-sized commissary and exchange. I also enjoyed the on-base museum.

The Gateway FamCamp has 25 RV sites with grass between the sites, water, sewer, 50amp electric, concrete parking pads and paved roads. There's small trees around the campground. The laundry, restroom and showers were clean and adequate. There is WiFi available, but we didn't use it. The host was very friendly and keeps the campground in great shape.

The Annex

The Annex FamCamp is located in the back corner of the base. Directions to get to the Annex were also updated on the website. This FamCamp is a older and less used. There's 30 RV sites with water, sewer, and 30amp electric. The sites and roads are gravel with grass between the sites. It's not as well taken care of or as new as the other FamCamp. There's a small, old  2-toilet restroom. Although it was an older, wooden building, it was still clean inside.
