I have stayed at 8 military campgrounds and rarely see anyone using a charcoal grill. Is there an "unwritten rule" about not using charcoal grills?

Don't think so - the gas ones are jut so much more handy.

I use my little Webber quite a bit. Just gotta make sure all the coals are out before you dump it in the dumpster. I run my hand through the ashes just to make sure.

I'm with you Martin, we use a 'Smokey Joe' Weber alot. We also have a gas grill, just in case it's too windy, or we need it hot and ready in a hurry. The problem with most campgrounds, to inclode both military and commercial is they do not offer an ash dump container. We are currently at Ellsworth AFB, and I have asked the management if they will provide a container for the CG.

last summer for us all the areas were under a sever drought and burn ban
so lp grills were the only thing you could use.

one place had absolutely no grills, even LP one it was so dry. they closed the cg a bit later because the fire danger was so extreme.

I love my little webber, and wet ashes before dumping.

But.. it's so dirty to transport. The ash and charcoal dust fills the toolbox.. (grill was carried in a truck box tool box on the back bumper of the 5er..

I think a lot of mature RV'ers eat out more or just cook in. I used to cook out all yhe time but just decided it was easier to pick up something or cook in.

I don't think there are any rules against their use and you get the benefit of the dishes & clean up being done by the wait staff, besides the Webber is a PITA @ clean-up time.

We use a Lodge Hibachi with natural lump charcoal. We use the electric charcoal starter to get the coals hot which takes just a few minutes. Really like the way it works for two people.

out in the west charcoal is often off limits and gas is legal. So out here gas is preferred even if it isnt the best for dutch ovens

I prefer charcoal over gas grills because I love to get the smoke flavor in the meats, but like someone said the gas grill is more handy and also smaller and quick to get going, but who is in a hurry when you are RVing right.
