  • cdrcos replied to the topic Re: Travel to Alaska in the forums.
We did it last year in a 29' Class C and it was a great trip. Roads up are fine, but FYI gas is sky-high in Canada.

Stayed at Elmendorf, Ft. Richardson and Seward Military Resort campgrounds.

It is now Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, but both campgrounds are in operation. We found Richardson (Black Spruce) to be nicer: more wooded and sites easier to get into and farther apart, but Elmedorf FAMCAMP was right by PX/Commissary.

Seward Military Resort was nice campground and they are able to get you discounted fees for fishing and sightseeing cruises.

I would guess not - I think most of those are local decisions based on local considerations. Probably many are brought on by specific bad experiences.

Our local Walmart always allowed it and then one day there was a No Overnight Parking sign.

Both are basically located in Downtown Anchorage.

We stayed at both last summer on our 10 week trip to Alaska. Both campgrounds are operating at different locations on the base. The Elmendorf FAMCAMP is more convent to the PX & Commissary, but we liked the Richardson camp (Black Spruce) because it is located in a more wooded area offering more privacy and most sites are pull through. Be sure to call ahead and check as we found Black Spruce was unavailable at one point due to new PCS personnel staying there upon transfer. The only issue we had w/Black Spruce was the laundry, which had 6-7 machines and only one operable.

The base is located on the outskirts of Anchorage, about 4.5 miles from downtown. Freeway takes you right into downtown.

  • cdrcos created a new topic Seward Air Force FAMCAMP closing? in the forums.
While staying at the "other" Seward military campground last month, the Seward Military Resort, I did visit the Seward Air Force FAMCAMP and saw some handouts labeled "Save our campground" and also heard that the Seward FamCamp will be closing in September and the land given to the City of Seward.

I also heard, while staying at Elmendorf FAMCAMP, that Elmendorf will be taking over operation of the Seward Military Resort from the Army (which I find hard to believe since that Resort seems to be quite their pride & joy), Maybe joint operation like the Joint Base?

Anyone else heard anything about this?

I went through the same run around and found that if you just keep asking to talk to a supervisor and sending emails, eventually they get the problem worked out.

They are very quick, however, to keep sending and telling you "form" responses that haven't worked already.

It is the best deal in town, so just keep pushing and it should work through - luckily I had a month's worth of pills, so that wasn't a concern, although they did keep asking me if I had enough medication (maybe I should have told them I only had 5 days?).

  • cdrcos created a new topic National Security & Federal Lands Protection Act in the forums.
one of the members (retired military) of another forum I frequent, posted this warning to fellow RV's that I thought should be repeated. I intend to contact my congressmen about it:

National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act, HR 1505
    « on: April 20, 2012, 04:37:12 AM »
My intention in posting this information is to make members aware of an issue that may affect our lifestyle and give them a chance to voice their opinions to their representatives. It is not meant to start a political discussion for or against a particular party, candidate or elected official.

This is another issue, like the increase in diesel fuel tax, allows Congress to make a bad decision when it comes to the RV lifestyle. End result is that Customs and Border Patrol agencies will have full freedom to build roads and trails, run ATV's, construct fences, outposts and other structures as they see fit on any National Park Service land within 100 miles of a United States border. This encompasses 54 National Park Service areas. Consider this: If you winter in Texas, the National Parks in the Rio Grande Valley fall under these rules. They could destroy Carlsbad Caverns.

Here is what I sent to my Congress-Critters, urging them to vote against this and similar bills:
    Quote
Representative Robert Bishop of Utah introduced H.R. 1505 on April 13, 2011.

The National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act would prohibit both the Interior and Agriculture Secretaries from taking action on public lands which impede the border security activities of the Secretary of Homeland Security. The Secretary of Homeland Security would have immediate access to any public land managed by the federal government in order to conduct activities that assist in securing the border. The Secretary of Homeland Security would issue a specific waiver of certain laws regarding sections of the international border between the United States and Mexico and between the United States and Canada, which would apply to all sections of the international land and maritime borders of the United States.

H.R. 1505 is only one of several pending bills that similarly threaten national parks and other park, refuge, and wilderness lands under the jurisdiction of the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture in the name of border security. For example, Senators McCain (R-AZ) and Kyl (R-AZ) and Representative Quayle (R-AZ) are sponsoring amendments to the authorization legislation for the Department of Homeland Security that would also have devastating impacts on national parks and other Federally protected lands and are unwarranted for national security.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano testified on March 8, 2012, that the bill "is unnecessary, and it's bad policy." And officials from the U.S. Border Patrol testified against the bill in Congress on July 8, 2011, explaining that "U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) enjoys a close working relationship with the Department of Interior (DOI) and Department of Agriculture (USDA) that allows us to fulfill our border enforcement responsibilities while respecting and enhancing the environment. We respect the missions of these agencies, and we recognize the importance of preserving the American landscape. Our agencies have formed a number of agreements that allow us to carry out both of these missions. CBP believes that efforts to reduce the number of illegal aliens crossing the border have lessened environmental degradation and have assisted with recovery of damaged resources, and we are fully committed to continuing our cooperative relationships with DOI and USDA to further this good work."

In light of the interagency collaboration and achievements made under existing authorities, and the testimony of the very agencies this legislation is expected to enhance, this harmful legislation is not needed.

I urge you, when the opportunity presents itself, to vote against this and other similar bills that would destroy some of America's greatest resources.

    Respectfully,

    Joe

Not sure which credit card you use, but we also put almost everything on one credit card for the rewards, in this case - "cash back". We use the Pentagon Federal VISA card which gives us 5% back on fuel purchases and 1.25% on everything else and occasionally 2% on selected things like airline tickets. Used to use the USAA card, but learned of the PENFED card on this forum and haven't looked back. We routinely get $8-900 per year back in rebates from them.

For cash, I still use the USAA debit card which gives you up to 10 free ATM withdrawals per month at ANY ATM. (Daughter used it for 5 months in Ecuador with no problems and no additional fees). Also use USAA for all banking online with features such as the ability to use a camera phone to deposit checks.

I find this combination makes us pretty self-sufficient on the road 6 mos./year.

Need to update the info on the Pentagon Federal Credit Union VISA card: effective 2/1/2012, they will continue to pay a 5% rebate on fuel purchases made at the pump, BUT the are dropping their 1% rebate on everything else to .25%.

Therefore, we will continue to use if for fuel purchases, but revert to our USAA credit card for everything else. And still the USAA debit card for FREE ATM withdrawals.

Unlike the last poster, we do use the debit card for getting cash. The beauty of it is you can go to any ATM and get cash and USAA will refund the ATM fee - so it is free (up to 10 per month) no need to find an ATM from your bank or worry about the fee.
