That depends on what kind of coverage you have while at home.
Are you over 65?
What kind of plan do you have.
I presume you are a military retiree, so you have some form of tri care.

Need to know more.

Dennis,

Sorry about that. Right now I am active duty, but will be retiring within 3 years. I will be 45 when I retire. Upon completion of retirement is when my wife and I will start our journey across country.

So I was wondering what do you do while traveling from state to state.

I believe you will go on TriCare Prime from the time you separate from active duty until you go on Medicare/TriCare For Life.

Under TriCare Prime, you must pick a primary care physician. (PCP).
All your care starts with your PCP. You need a referal to visit a specialist.

If you are on maintenance/long term meds, they will be provided by express scripts, mail order service.

As with all plans, emergency and urgent care can be provided as needed anywhere needed.

Meds for emergency and urgent care can be obtained from many local pharmacies.

There is a lot more, but when you separate, I'm sure they will give you all the info. Basically, TriCare Prime is your provider until you go on Medicare.

There will be co-pays associated with all service.

I offer all this only from my experience and hope it is accurate.

Not necessary for Tricare Prime ... although that works.

If you go Tricare Standard, you pay nothing unless you use a doctor or clinic ... than you have a co-pay, but you can go anywhere you want with no referrals (anywhere that takes Tricare)

Any Tricare you use, becomes Tricare For Life once you get Medicare. Then it becomes the back-up.

If you use Tricare for prescriptions, you pay a co-pay. If you take scripts to any base, you get it free if they carry it. VA will give you scripts free if you have VA doc, or get VA approval for script from your doctor

We use the VA when at home campground base in the summer..(both of us are Vets... ;) with Dock as the retiree.) When on the road we use Tri-care Standard....works for us until the Tri-care for Life kicks in about another 3 yrs.....
