The RV Park itself is okay... nothing to crow about but meets basic needs. Signage is somewhat confusing once you get to the park (the Winans Gate is best access but sure takes some navigation to get from the gate to the park... this site's directions are spot on). As previously written, the campground has FHU with picnic table/cement patio but is dirt road access/parking and really has nothing to add (amenities) at the campground; no bathhouse/showers. The left turn just inside the 24/7 Rio Gate is not only "sharp," but restricted by the guard shack and the road edge. If you're towing/long rig then be prepared and think it through before moving. Can't rate this campground high enough! New section in a pull-through with plenty of shade, easy-reach to hookups, clean facilities/showers, and pleasant camp host (Jeff). This is a must-stop if you're in the area. Both gates 24/7 and easy access to Charleston. Glad we came here!
This is about the only RV park in the Shaw/Sumter area, so convenience reigns. But making a telephone reservation was fraught with issues (never resolved) that led to issues upon check-in. Staff didn't want to know about the issues when I brought them up. Finally resolved in person so I dropped them. We LOVED this place! Pulled in through the front gate but missed the stop at the Welcome office... had to drive our toad back to register. Since we were there on a weekday, I checked with the Range Control Officer while registering to see if we could drive our toad thru the training range to the beach access. No problem. Peaceful, quiet location on base. This was the first stop on a long summer tour and it set the mood for us. The site was spacious and easy to access. We ate the the dining hall (ok - not great but not bad) and used the gas station to fill up (relatively easy access even with a toad). Great location but... Check-in is about 150 yds from parking area... and if you don't remember to take in your registration and insurance card you get to make two trips. Why isn't this signed? Sites are close and a bit of a challenge to get into. Pool only open during a few weekend hours. Awoke one morning to rain? No - they were watering the grass - and the back of our coach! Great hidden gem! Very pleasant camping with decent-sized sites, clean facilities, friendly host. We dined @ Breakers Restaurant - inexpensive if not gourmet. Relatively easy access to gasoline and other base facilities (for our 35' MH + toad). We'll be back here again!
Pleasant scenery but directly adjacent to Monterey Airport. Better like airplanes! Narrow roads and some obtrusive branches require close inspection before moving a longer rig into a space. We had to move before we could settle in. We have a Progressive surge protector on our coach and it didn't like the taste of the 30 amp power in two different boxes, so we went without electricity for an evening (low voltage warning); however, it recovered in the morning.
