This cottage at the base of the lighthouse was very nice. It is an older building that has been refurbished inside and well maintained outside. The furniture in the living room was not very comfortable, but the bedrooms and kitchen were very comfortable. Wonderful view of Lake Michigan and early morning sunrises. Cell phone usage was limited to the parking lot and TV reception was poor (3 stations). Surrounding area had a lot to offer - nuclear power plant visitor...
The new campground is open and the old one will be closed for a long time due to legal problems with the upgrade. Disappointing that the new campsites have NO tables, grills, or fire rings and no shade. They do not have an office and must rely on Jackie at Ocean Pines (Oceana NAS) to schedule people in and out (supposed to change in August with new computer system). No access to beach from campground. Rick, camp host, and Butch,...
Stayed at the older campground next to the marina (not the one off base). Staff at marina was first rate. They went out of their way to take care of any concerns we had. Quiet, small base that appears to be a "think tank" for development, research and innovations of Navy systems.
I give location a 4.0 only because when they open the back gate to the base at 5:00 AM you will think you are sleeping on a race track. Price is higher than most military parks. WiFi connections are expensive. MWR manager appears to be hampering hosts desire to run socializing events. All in all, still a good value.
This campground has it's limitations, but if you know what they are before hand it is not too bad. There is no water, sewage, and they have poor phone reception. However the location, view, quietness, and availability of all on base facilities make this a very nice campground. Water to the campground has been promised for several years now, but still not available on site. The roads, grass and landscaping have all been well maintained. It is a small campground...
We had requested site 21 and we were disappointed. Electrical box was taped to a poll and the cover was on the ground. Site was so narrow that my awning touched my neighbors slideout. My campground grill was directly below my neighbors bedroom slideout so I could not use it. After arriving on Thursday we had to wait till Monday to have the grass cut and trimmed. It was also our unfortunate bad luck to have arrived at the time...
My wife and I visited this campground for the first time and we were very impressed with the conditions and cleanliness of the campground and the entire base. We stayed in (and would recommend) the older gravel sites because of the shade and tree cover. Newer sites are concrete pads, but new trees will need some time to grow. Bathroom facilities are different and take some getting used to. Nice laundry. Easy late check in system. Two fishing ponds (base...
My wife and I visited this campground because of it's location and access to the lake. While the scenery, sunsets, and abundant animal sightings were very good, there are some things that need correcting. BAD - location was 20 miles from area attractions and significant shopping, campground was not maintained well (many downed branches and trees and grass not cut), no visible security, no sewage connection at site, bathrooms were good, but needed better maintenance, not big rig friendly (35'...
Nice level sites. Bad sewer connections. Tall pines throughout park. Very good commissary and exchange on the main side of base. Beautiful park with catch and release fishing. Bowling alley, library, shopette, golf course were all very good. Found WiFi connection by parking in front of lodge and next to hospital.
