Disabled Veterans access to MWR facilities was created by Karlheinz51
As a 40% service connected disabled veteran I am so looking forward to having access to the many base RV camps that are supported by MWR funds. I have my VA ID card showing my status - wondering if anyone else has more info on this big big change that takes effect Jan 2020.

The government was supposed to release details on how they are going to handle this by October 1st. However, I also can't find any additional information (yet). The main problem is getting access to the installation.

I talked with a FamCamp a couple days ago and they haven't been given any details. They also say the problem is getting access to the base. Even though it takes effect January 1st, 2020, they doubt it will. Security is the issue.

I agree with you, Larry. Still, I plan on making every reservation I can for next year as it is going to be a nightmare to get a camp site with potentially 3 million plus individuals having access to fam camps.
Heck, around 800,000 folks alone are rated disabled from hearing loss.

It appears that base access, including recurring access more than 1 day, is still an issue on some bases. NAS Jacksonville, for example. I have a VHIC Card with SC disability. So, I have been closely monitoring how the new access is proceeding.

I read this article and was somewhat dismayed at how the Marine Veteran and spouse was treated:
www.militarytimes.com/pay-benefits/2020/...sDewjzOli15dF9tz7nW0

Reading this fact sheet from the DOD, seems NAS Jacksonville is either on the wrong page as DOD or is a special case facility.

Q. As a newly eligible veteran or caregiver, can I bring a guest onto the installation and into the facilities with me?

"If the installation has credential enrollment capabilities and the credential
the guest uses is enrollable, their credential can be enrolled for recurring access as a guest with the sponsoring
veteran or caregiver so that they don't have to stop at visitor control every time, but they can only access the
installation when they are with someone who is authorized access."

BUT NAS Jacksonville website states:

Those approved to visit the station can also sponsor individuals per the following guidelines:
1. They must stop at Pass & ID and have those being sponsored conduct a background check.
2. Once the background check is approved, they will be issued a 1-day pass. Background checks must be conducted EVERY time they come aboard the installation.
3. The VHIC cardholder MUST stay with the person they are sponsoring at all times.

So, bottom line, not sure a new Patron would be able to visit in an RV/Tent or Lodging if they need to report every day for a background check at the visitors center. Feeling like this isn't going to work.

Considering the amount of funding that goes back into the local bases from Exchange, Commissary and other MWR base facilities, often north of 70% of each dollar, the bases and staff should be welcoming to their new patrons.
