I am near (within 6 months) the final stages of purchasing a CLASS "A" RV. I have spent the last 2 years reading, researching, and asking questions leading me to this moment. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I don't want to make a bad decision or purchase.

I have searched these forums and haven't found any discussion about BANKRUPT RV MANUFACTURERS. My gut tells me to stay away from ALFA because of some of the problems owners had with trying to contact the manufacturer. I have researched RV TRADER and found numerous NATIONAL RV's for sale, but recently found out that they went BANKRUPT. I was thinking of purchasing one of the National Tropical, until now.

So I dug a little deeper and wanted to find out if there were any more manufacturers that went BANKRUPT, only to find out that there are some that are hanging on by a thread and decided to stop PRODUCTION.

So my questions are
- Does anyone own a RV from a manufacturer that went BANKRUPT ?
- Have you ran into any difficulties (i.e. parts, maintenance, etc.) ?

Have no info about this - but after the guys on this site, RV.net is a great site for exactly this info. It has a category for "Class A" as well. Lots of great knowledge there ... although, as always, watch who and what you believe directly. Would be a very good source of "what to follow up" on this subject.

NO manufacturers on the site, only 'owners and users' - so you get real life experiences and not "sales hype" ...

As Monkey said, RV.Net is good, but even better (IMHO) is the ‘Owners Forum’ on IRV2.com.
Regarding any ‘orphan’, you need to remember that most of the components of a given RV are available ‘off-the shelf’. The chassis and drive-train are supplied, as are all of the fixtures, appliances, furniture, etc. The ‘fiberglass’ is all that most manufacturers make/supply, and that can be taken care by most good body shops.
Continued good luck on your search!

Might try going to several RV repair shops and ask them what RV's they are having difficulty getting what they need for repairs. Depending on where you are if you get a chance stop at Lazy Days in Seffner, Fl. as they are one of the largest RV repair shops we have ever seen or heard about. We do not go there as we have been Tiffin RV owners for the last 9 years and Tiffin is still in business in Red Bay, Al. so you can always go there if you need repairs. Check out some of the Tiffin RV's as they only make Class A and we have the same one now since 2007 and have not needed to make any trips to Red Bay, Al. as they make a quality RV. Small stuff we can take care of on our own or our local RV technician who is a personal friend.

We purchased a new Safari just before Monaco started to fail at Lazy Days in Seffner, FL. From what we were able to learn we are a worst case scenario, but, frankly, who plans to buy an expensive brand new motorhome and agrees that it can have NUMEROUS leaks and problems, mold included? Monaco went bankrupt and an attny lied, took more money to defend us. In all of it Lazy Days never helped us. I will never buy from them again. They lied, the salesman, from the get go. After four months living at Lazy Fays in the bay, paying at their rv park while trying to get things fixed we knew more than we ever wanted to know about buying a new rv from a manufacturer. My advice..buy used. Wish I had kept the old one, it had no surprises and was less trouble. We even tried the Lemon Law (another story!) and the manufacturer said during mediation that ALL new rv's leak.

This is good advice. Tiffins are beyond my budget, though.

We were told that getting things fixed when Monaco failed was harder because of parts and they do not seem to have the desire to fix things at repair centers. We just started doing it ourselves and gave up on the warranty part. But we did ask at two or three rv dealers with repair facilities and they each said the same thing, that no one could get work done. You do NOT want to end up in this situation unless you have a trusted friend to do your repairs!

Suzq, do not understand or agree with your comment that Tiffins are beyond your budget if you bought a new Safari. Monaco products were always priced higher than a comparable Tiffin RV motorhome. Tiffin has always had the reputation for building the coach with the best quality for the lowest price and always stands behind his RV's. Not saying Tiffin has not built a motorhome that may have had problems when bought new but they would do whatever it took to fix it right and if it could not be fixed right they would give you another new coach right at the plant. We know so many people who told us nightmare stories about repairs done shoddy, additional damage done to the RV and long delays in getting the repairs done at Lazy Days. So sorry you had to go through the nightmare you did, and what a load of doodoo to say all new RV's leak, we never had a leaker, even non-Tiffins we first purchased never leaked.

Tiffins would be what I would look for if I coud get loose from this Safari. Spouse says they have a high rate of value. I could not belie e my ears when that Monaco rep said that. But, then I guess he would have said ANYTHING. Used to be considered a "fatal flaw" afterall. Hard to sell this one to someone else, prickles my consvience badly.

Personally, I would pick a National rig over an Alfa. Both Alfa and National had some sidewall issues like other manufacturers but Alfa had more than their share. Some say that's what put them out of business. Alfa also has a reputation of being an electrical/electronic nightmare. I think you'll find the fit and finish of a National product better. Not to say there are not many proud, happy Alfa owners. Just my opinion.

We own a 2008 National Tropical Diesel motorhome, and have found it to be very dependable. While the motorhome manufacturer is bankrupt, the warranties on the engine, transmission and other important parts is still in force. Even one of the largest motorhome manufacturers, Monaco, went bankrupt and was purchased by other investors. We did learn the new owners were not honoring warranties on the motorhome chassis. In mid 2007, most RV purchasers left the market due to the economy, and several manufacturers went bankrupt. It appears that the RV market is coming alive again.

I totally agree and keep in mind that most of the RV manufacturers that went out of business were the ones who were building the better quality rigs - that is why they folded, folks didn't want to pay for the quality :( .

Good luck!

I read on an RV forum that Alfa See Ya went out of business.

Alfa closed shop years ago, about the same time as many others did. But you'll still see many Alfa's on the road.
