Admiral Baker in San Diego recently raised their rates for retirees to $35.00 per night. Active duty rate is now $30.00 per night.

The rate went up $9 dollars per night, $26 to the current $35. This is after a $4.00 dollar per night increase last year.

Have a great week.

While not confirmed, I heard that the Navy is standardizing rates at all of their campgrounds. $35 for all except active duty, which is $30. Pretty steep!

Makes ya wonder -- there was a time when camping was for recreation and moral ...

Did it suddenly become a money-maker, and just as suddenly did some one figure out it could be a money-maker instead of recreation and moral??

If it goes to $35, that almost double from just a few years ago on most bases ...

We should all put in a vote, double the CG fee AND double our retirement, and I'd be more than happy to pay it !!! Seems odd to me that COLA remains a big fat "0" this year, but prices still rise ...

wow
we were hit with cg sticker shock at redstone arsenal a few years ago
they built a new site and prices doubled.

i am not cheap by nature
but 30-35 per night is ludicrous.

but then again if they have good wifi and clean laundry and concrete pads, maybe not

i ramp out our trips and if a base is along the route we stop
if not its a tt park or rpi or a coe park.

I'll check NAS Fallon NV in a few days, if it's $35 a night, the other RV parks and the fairgrounds are a better value.

I think they are really hurting themselves by raising the rates. I am at Seabreeze RV Park located on Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach in CA. They raised their rates to $27 per night last year. The park usage has had a significant drop in campers. I have been here over a month and other than the Memorial day weekend the park has remained at one-third of the 85 sites filled at any one time. They cannot be making money at that rate. I was here in previous years when the rate was $23 per night and it was always full. Had to get on a waiting list in 2008 to get a site.

I have talked to management here and they are fighting the new increase because this faciility does not have the same amenities that other military facilities have i.e.commisary, exchange, bowling alley, pool or dining facilities.

Happy travels.

Having used Admiral Baker for years, and watched as the rates went from $17 to $20, then to $21 and then $26 for the same sites, I for one will probably not use AB again. There are many CG's in the San Diego area that, based on their weekly/monthly rates are a much better value than AB at $35/night!

"I have talked to management here and they are fighting the new increase because this faciility does not have the same amenities that other military facilities have i.e.commisary, exchange, bowling alley, pool or dining facilities."

But that has nothing to do with CG -- those facilities we can use without CG ... it has now become a cash cow that the base can tap into, it seems, and once again, our retirement pay takes a hit after minimal raises again.

YEs, they should fight the increase, but for th real reason, which is camping is a benefit that AD and Ret earned, and not so it becomes cash to be used elsewhere in MWR ... and too often that happens - the CG funds go to mow the golf greens ...

I hope the statement is wrong that the Navy MAY be trying to standardize fees at $35 per night for retirees. I've always found the folks at Mayport's Pelican Roost to be knowledgeable, so I gave them a call and asked if they'd heard anything about this. They said they hadn't heard a thing and doubted the Navy would try to do it. With that said.....when I was on active duty, we always said, "Last to know, first to go."

I was there last March when the rate was $26 and I thought that was high. This is not a fist-rate campground. Very few amenities. No commissary and exchange nearby. Off base and no security. Sites very close together. I was willing to pay $26 only because I wanted to visit San Diego.

It is pretty obvious that some base commanders no longer consider their FamCamps as a benefit for the troops. Now the FamCamps are primarily a source of revenue and temporary housing for active duty and base contractors. During my last tour of duty, I was a member of the base Morale, Welfare, and Recreation committee and saw where the "cash cows" (FamCamps) were used to offset the perennial money-losers (auto hobby shop). I guess there is increasing pressure to make these MWR units self-supporting. But $35 a day for a mediocre FamCamp is going too far.

I may have been given erroneous information by the staff at Admiral Baker regarding the $35 dollar rate for retirees.

I just spoke with a retiree who was at AB and he stated that he paid $30 dollars per night.

They absolutely told me $35 dollars. I questioned them twice when I heard the amount. I will call them again and see what I am told.

I have not heard of any Navy wide standardiztion. I think the huge price increase is strictly Navy Region Southwest here in California.

Have a great 4th.

Admiral Baker did drop their rate for retirees back to $30 per night.

I am currently at Monterey Pines RV Park in Monterey, CA and their rates increased to $30 per night as of July 1st.

Happy travels.

$30 is pretty high, anyway, for an MCG ... this is a benefit we earned, and one of the problems sometimes is the local CGs rates are taken into consideration ... which should have no effect on what a base charges.

Similar to the reason our gas station charges same as local rates ... to keep competitive local gas stations, which should have NOTHING to do with our prices.

Having recently stayed at The Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme FamCamp, I was shocked by this increase.

From what I understood from the woman in the office is that this standard rate increase is in that Naval District only.

Hope this increase is not for all Navy bases. If so, then that may rule out staying at JAX NAS next winter.

I think this increase is for California only. I am at Eagle Hammock RV Park at Kings Bay Sub Base and they have not raised their rates. Only $434 per month. We checked out Jacksonville NAS and for now their rates have not increased. Cannot say what will happen by next winter.

Have you heard anything about the bases in CA raising the rate to $35 per day later this year? This was the rumor when I was in that area last year.

I'm (possibly) going to move onto NAF El Centro for a bit and seen that they raised their rates from $250 to $300 a month also. But, back on topic, Admiral Baker is a nice area yet close to everthing you'd ever want. You will find a lot worse places for $30 a night!

I just did a quick check on San Diego Mission Bay RV Resort, and for a week in May, the cheapest was $350, so Adm Baker looks like a bargain to me.

They'd have to give me more than $300 to spend a month at El Centro.
