My family loved this location. The beach was one of the most wild we have experienced. Baby seals frolicking in the great waves birds preening the white sands were regularly seen. On the other east side of the campground is a wetland. We had a very relaxing family vacation here. We noted the engine test facilities right next to the campground, and it appeared as if they were still in use, but not during our stay.

What a beach!! Unfortunately it goes down hill from there. Difficult and small parking sites, the good ones occupied by long termers, a couple of them were actually growing veggies at their sites! Other amenities are virtually nonexistent. I think with some, well maybe alot, of TLC the USN could turn this into an outstanding facility. As is I would only return for the beach.

One of our favorite campgrounds. Hadn't been here in about a year and was reminded upon arrival of just how beautiful this area is. Nothing like walking along the estuary and seeing the seals, brown pelicans, plover's and other wildlife. Campground was very clean and I observed one of the camphosts, Tony, consistently working to keep the place clean on weekends. Very customer oriented young man. Great jumping off point for sightseeing the California coast from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica.

AN "OK" PLACE, ALL PAVED SITES, BUT FIVE OR SIX ARE TOO SHORT FOR 30 FT. + TRAILERS OR 5TH WHEELS AS THEY OVER HANG THE BLACK TOP AND THE GROUND DROPS OFF ENOUGH THE REAR JACKS CAN'T BE USED. THE RESTROOMS--SHOWER FACILITYS ARE EXCELLENT!! A GOOD STOP IF YOU LIKE TO BE NEAR THE OCEAN. I WOULD SUGGEST THE AVAILABILITY OF SOME SITE MAPS AND BASE LAY-OUT WOULD BE NICE.

This was the first time we stayed here and we will again! Most of the sites have some sort of beach view. I had no problem parking our 37' 5th wheel and there was good spacing between the sites. The laundry was located in the motel, $1 to wash and .50 to dry. The restroom/shower facilities were adequate. Good water hookups, sewer and cable TV. The beach was great as well as the abundant wildlife. We will enjoy this gem again.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...your approach is off of scenic Hwy. 1, you drive along a gorgeous coastal road and your entrance into the base off of Las Posas Road is of the lagoons filled with wildlife. The lagoons teeming with a variety of wildlife, both avian and sealife. It can be subtle, so take time to stop and observe it. We watched seals, herons, egrets and even some nurse sharks right along the road adjacent to the RV park. Be careful when approaching the RV park, the signage can be misleading, drive past the sign that points to the park and turn left into the campground parking along the motel for registration. Our experience with the staff was wonderful; both on the phone making reservations and in person. Some caveats: mosquitoes were rampant during our stay (supposedly unusual), the water pressure at the camp sites was over a 100 and the electricity varied depending on how many rigs were in the camp. The water pressure affected our rig and our friends, so much so that our reducers were inoperable and we ended up using our onboard water and water pump to avoid any damage to our plumbing. It is an active base and the campground is adjacent to an aircraft engine testing facility, which can be noisy at times but that is the beauty of being military and having the HONOR to be able to use active military installations, previous reviews have complained about these issues but remember; "Our freedom is not free". P.S.-there is a memorial to the passengers and crew of Alaska Airlines flight 261 that crashed off the coast of Point Mugu a few years back, it is at the end of the point past the beachfront RV and cottages.

Sorry to be so contrary to my contrary comrades, but this is our fourth trip in two years and OUR FAVORITE of the many RV military parks, especially the beach sites, especially the many with haughty tenured civilian management. If quiet and casual framed by the best ocean setting of the lot isn't high on your list, a fancier place might be best for you. But with an endless show of Dolphins, Sea Lions, Pelicans, Sea Gulls, and Sand Pipers in the inlet sanctuary and along a private half-mile beach with sheltered surf, we've scheduled another visit next month. Management, by the way, is refreshingly non-intrusive, mostly hang around the neat motel office with information and basic supplies at the ready. A couple of on-site RV monitors take care of the RVers and use laissez faire management. Helps make this the most open and relational campground we know. Reservations is cool, too. No pay in advance means there are more cancellations and no-shows and NO empty "paid for" sites. Get on the wait list and they'll call you or just drop in: probably will get a spot, especially when school's not out. There are a bunch of good locations with ocean view for MH's. Fivers have less options four good sites, six pretty fair ones in terms of view. No site number reservations, however. First come, first served...keep ears open for departures from favored sites and arrange with management to move. Email me if you want clues; I've got the chart. First time to check out what a great area this is. 30 scenic minutes south to Santa Monica beaches, half hour to the wonderful Channel Islands National Park and the tourist shops and restaurants. About the same to Old Ventura. Lots to do.

We stayed here 3 nights. Wanted to stay at Port Hueneme, but couldn't. The sites are wide and had blacktop. Right on the beach. Didn't have a problem with noise at all. As far as being clean, I did not use the showers or restroom...hint. A lot of sand and not the cleanest. Of course, the sand is expected, but clean is a necessity. Not much on this base, so went to Port Hueneme. Good commissary with fresh fruit from the local fields. Good selection of produce, too. Nice, small exchange. We would have stayed longer at Mugu, but the spaces were reserved for the weekend. Suggest making reservations. If you have pets, expect sand and dirt in the RV, for there is no grass. The employees at the registration were nice. Don't understand the attitude about keeping up the campgrounds. I know this is a benefit that we don't necessarily need, but if the campground is there, you'd think that it would be kept up and clean. Probably would stay here again.

We came for the beach and were delighted! The campground has older hookups - either 50A or 30A but not both. Some of the sites are difficult to get into due to space limitations. For the little we used them, the bath house appeared clean and in good repair. The adjacent hotel lobby has limited snacks, and a laundry facility. Immediately adjacent to the campground is the base engine test cell, and they tested Allison T56 turboprops twice during our month stay. Noisy, but nothing compared to a jet engine. The campground is under the flight pattern, but again just turboprop aircraft. There is no commissary on base, it's over at Port Hueneme, about a 15 minute drive away. If you're into farm fresh produce, this area has numerous roadside stands and a couple farmer's markets. We would come again for the beach.

While the beach front views are spectacular, that is about it. There are very few rules enforced and camp host does very little or nothing. Camp ground has fire rings that have not been clean in years and the sites/spaces have not been cleaned of sand or swept off. Fire rings are too close to neighboring sites and cause smoke problems. This place could be the gem of RV camps, but the money this place makes (well over 1 Million a year) goes for something else. MWR management should be replaced and the RV park should be run be some one the knows the RV life style. The shower rooms are forever dirty and full of sand. Internet, some sites don't work and up and down like a yoyo. There is a lot of full timeres, mostly military whom could be better served, by allowing them to stay longer then 30 days. Also if your in the click, with current RV management, then you dont have to move every 30 days.

My wife and I are stationed here, and basically live in the facility. While the ocean and views are spectacular, that is about it. There is an engine testing facility within the camground, and it is LOUD! Forget a quiet day of rest here. Also, the jets and planes fly right over your rig, ruining any ambiance. Tom, the camp host does a good job with limited budget. The shower rooms are clean, but the men's shower has a broken head in one unit, and there is no heat, which is needed here cause it is COLD most of the time. Most sites are 30 amp, and the 50 amp are worse location. Sporadic use of internet, some sites don't work. Our main complaint after all that, is the price. Outrageous at 690 a month (23 per day, no monthly rate). Ridiculous to charge monthly active duty this rate for ZERO amenities. Most other MWR camrgrounds in other states charge FAR less, and offer FAR more. Selling the view as the main reason this costs so much is bull chips. We were at 630 a month, and were supposed to be "locked in" for 6 months, but greedy manager insisted on collecting 690 to be "fair." fair to who? the mangers who collect good salary for 10 hour work week? I think not. I could live with the limited amenities and the noise if the price was right. We live here due to poor base housing and costly rentals in town, mostly to save on gas. If we didn't have to, we wouldn't stay here. I recommend the nearsest KOA, pay the same or less and get a HOT TUB and POOL!!

This base is a perfect location for doing sight seeing in LA and Hollywood. The base itself is a little less desirable. The guy at Gate 3 would not even think about getting out of his hut to assist with a pass. He even made me take the paper tag from my back window down to show him instead of just walking out and looking at it. Gate 1 people are great but, the barracades make a person pulling a 40 ft 5th wheel very nervous. We barley squeezed through. When we checked in the saff member did not give us the codes to showers. I do not think staff keeps park up very well. No Diesel on base. FamCamp in light path and engine testing facility across street. Now, for the good stuff.....The beach and view is amazing. The kids loved it. We watched them from our window playing, we watched seals, dolphins, and birds a plenty. While there was may down falls, the beach and location makes up for it all.

Nice place. Sealions, pelicans, herons, other water birds very plentiful. Very nice beach right across the road. Water too cold for swimming without a wet suit. Little bit of aircraft noise, it's an active Naval Air Station after all. Blue Angels really light the place up during their annual air show. Some of the sites are a little tight getting into. I was parked with rear wheels within a foot of pavement in order to get sewer hose attached. Camp host left a unfriendly/threating note on my door demanding that I move forward so that rear wheels were on pavement or I would be visited by base security. Clean laundry room and rest room. Small exchange, no commissary. Couldn't find diesel on base. They have a drive through coin operated RV wash station near the exchange.

Nice RV Park without many frills. We didn't check all of the shower houses, but the one next to us was VERY clean and new. We had a nice relaxing time, just wished it wasn't so windy. Reservations went very smooth, but wasn't needed since there were plenty of available sites. However, sites vary on size and there were only a few available large enough for us. I'm sure this is one popular location in the summer.

We had a very nice stay. The campgrounds are well kept, although the restrooms and shower rooms needed to be cleaned no matter what time of day I went in. The overall park was nice, ocean view from almost any site. Some of the front sites on the left (looking at the water) were only 50 amps and we didn't have an adapter, so we moved a little farther from the ocean and used a site that had 30 amp. There was a sewer back up on the row over from us, but was taken care of in a very timely manor. Personnel walked around the sites and informed everyone they could see sitting out that there was a problem and it was being taken care of and to please avoid the area. Office staff was great and had lots of useful information. The seals were out and the pelicans were plentiful, we had a great time just watching all the wild life. This campground is a gem in hiding. We will visit it again!

Each campsite has FREE instant on local telephone and DSL broadband connections. There are 24 50A and 37 30A electrical connections for a total of 61 total FHU blacktop campsites. There are several sites that are limited to RV's 29 foot or shorter. Office is open 24 hours a day. Las Posas Road gate is only open M-F from 0530-1730. Main gate is 1 mile NW of Las Posas Road gate on Hwy 1 and is open 24/7. There are 10 additional full hook up sites down the beach. They only have 30A and don't have the DSL, cable or phone hookups that the have in the main park. Total 71 spaces.

Have stayed here previously and will likely return just for the location. Beautiful ocean view and lots of wildlife. New manager onboard now. Appears that a new camp host is in the offing as well. Campground still needs upgrades to utilities but the phonelines to the sites have been repaired after nearly 2 years of no service. WiFi is now available in the Beach Motel lobby at no charge. While the phone lines have been repaired be aware that the old phone connection boxes were not removed when the new ones were added. Took me a couple of hours to figure out I had my phone line plugged into the old box. I'm much smarter now. Still a great location for the view and a great jumping off place to visit Santa Barbara and other areas. The computerized reservation system is still down. All done on paper spreadsheets now and seems to be only as good as the clerk on duty.
