Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: Vechicle Registration in the forums.Cherry Point MCAS usually requires that they put them on but last time I got lucky and they gave me all 3 sets. They say the reason is some of the younger folks were getting a set, mounting them on a flexible surface and then moving them around to different vehicles that might not have been otherwise legal on base.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: Sigsbee in December in the forums.I didn't answer earlier because my info is about 3 years old. Our experience then was that there was less than a week in dry camping...I think 2 or 3 days. But, this may not be relevant these days. Enjoy!

Steve Johnson created a new topic Sigsbee and Isaac in the forums."Saturday night Isaac update - from the CO - set Condition of Readiness I with these specific points: RV park residents evacuate."
...NAS Key West Facebook site I checked because always have been curious about what a goat rope it must be when a hurricane threatens. That road must be a zoo and where do you go? This may be easier since the Miami area is relative safe now with the westerly track.

Daffiny, earlier in this thread it explained that you have to send an email to Cindy the Campground Director at Keywest. Her email address is __KRN__ This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it__KRN__
Have there been any emails in the last few months? I got an acknowledgment that I would be on the list but never got any emails.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: Onslow beach in the forums.I had to respond to a young civilian friend that visited us at Onslow that was aghast at the separate beaches. I pointed out to her to look at it from the view point of a young EM: he/she welcomes being able to have age appropriate fun without stodgy officers/SNCO's "watching" them.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: SOS recipes in the forums. Thanks for the tip re the Stouffers' product...never thought to look for "SOS" in the grocery store. Found it yesterday and had some this morning. Not bad for a quick & easy. Melbin's recipe is similar to my Bride's (of several decades). She's a professional chef, but Belgian, so I was suspect on her SOS skills but she does real good. One thing she does different is make the white sauce by itself and puts a halved onion in it and the sauce slow cooks for hours...she says it "cooks" the flour and removes the raw flour taste. She throws the onion away when she adds the other ingredients.
I was reminded of something eating the Stouffer's this AM: in the dark ages (white name tape Army) I'd eat a huge mess of SOS but then hit the Ft Bragg training areas and worked up a sweat all day. This AM I ate a mess and probably won't get my pulse up unless I have to change batteries in the remote. Maybe I'd better back off.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: SOS recipes in the forums.Air Force? SOS? Eggs Benedict maybe
But maybe they had some TACP bubbas on base and that would explain it.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: SOS recipes in the forums.Fist this is an attempt at light humor. I'm a geezer and pining for the days when the Army Mess Sgt made the real, stick-to-your-bones-all-day stuff. If there was a pot of the chipped beef and one of the greasy hamburger, I'd go for the latter. If there was just chipped beef, I'd dig in.
The other purist debate would be toast or biscuits? I was raised a toast man at Ft Bragg.

Steve Johnson created a new topic SOS recipes in the forums. On the mess hall thread I questioned if any served REAL SOS (i.e., real hamburger, layer of grease, etc.) I love SOS. I know it is evil, but anything that tastes good is evil.
Anyone care to share their recipe for REAL SOS? Anyone that mentions the jarred dried beef as an ingredient gets disqualified. My bride (of several decades) does an great one, but she is Belgian so what does she know about mess halls? I want one from a '60's era mess Sergeant.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: Mess Halls in the forums. But do any of them serve REAL SOS? I.e., a grease layer on top, real ground meat, and a get you moving for the day taste
I sure miss that. In the dark ages, Ft Monmouth had a monthly SOS contest for all the messhalls (oh, not politically correct..Dining Facilities) where the GO's and DV's would come and judge the SOS and extol (humorously) how messhall SOS had contributed to their success.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: Two Camp Hosts Needed at Onslow Beach Camp Lejeune in the forums.Curt is bashful because dogs, somehow, made a sign thanking him for creating the off-leash area.
Curt: I can't find anything on the MCCS Onslow site link about hosts. Part of me is interested but since we live on Core Sound, just 2 hours away it would probably be dumb...but I always enjoy Onslow because I can get away from the stickhouse to-do list.

Steve Johnson replied to the topic Re: NAS Key West in the forums. From Tampa we usually cross the state on the Tamiami Trail (scenic) and stay at the Micasuki Indian casino where the trail ends...maybe 5 hours. They welcome parking in their lot...just sign up with security. Good buffet The lot is patrolled (I don't WalMart "camp" but this is a good exception. From there we head to Sigsbee. Takes about 3.5 hours.
