jsummers created a new topic Miramar MCAS in the forums.Miramar has no Famcamp so I've never read much about it here or elsewhere. I read that they have a "Stay & Play" pkg for golfers that looks pretty attractive. My wife and I might want to fly down from AK mid-winter just to warm up and play golf. Does anyone here have any insider knowledge of Miramar ? I'd like to know what you think about a weeks stay there, using their on-base "Navy Inn" and facilities. Any eval on their golf course would be most appreciated also. Thnx.

jsummers ► William Garrison Howdy, written from Barksdale AFB, Nov 28. Yeh it's cold now but it'll pass. My wife & I are retired AF & we live in Alaska. We both grew up in S'port & have family here. We winter down South in our Travel trailer usually traveling & touristing around. In addition to FT. Clark, we sure loved Kings Bay Naval Sub Base in St. Mary's, GA. If you're considering a real BIG move, it'd be worth a visit

jsummers replied to the topic Re: San Antonio in the forums.Pls visit Ft. Clark, TX. before you decide on settling down. It's on the road from S.A. to Laredo (the hwy number escapes me now). It's in Bracketville, TX. a small town midway between Uvalde and Laredo. Close enough to S.A. for medical attention according to the residents we spoke to. It's a beautiful old US Army calvary post, entirely a US National Historical Registry deal, but turned private. (it has its own website too) It has everything you can imagine including the nicest section for RV "ports", as you called them. There's a RV park and a big full-sized home, residential section too.

jsummers replied to the topic Re: Piliaau Army Recreation Center, Oahu, HI in the forums.Happy NY's from snowy Alaska. Never got any good inside info on military spots in Hawaii so we're going commercial. Bellows was booked up over a year in advance too. I rented the lower floor of a schoolteacher's house on website "VRO". It's on the island of Hawaii too. There's a military rec site up on the Kilauea volcano, which I'll report on when we get back. Cabins but no camping advertised.

jsummers replied to the topic Re: South Louisiana in the forums. We're back from the "plantation tour". We began at Poche' Plantation RV park. On the old (OLD) Mississippi river road. Nice and clean but pricy. More than $25 per night sees high to us now that we've been hooked on Mil Famcamps. But it was central to our touring. Midway between New Orleans & Baton Rouge. Too many tourist spots to mention, w/in an hr's drive. Then we stayed at the KOC (mentioned here)in New Iberia. Much cheaper but just as nice. We were too close to the highway noise; could've moved but just too lazy. Then we casino camped at Marksville, LA. (Paragon Casino). Simply a beautiful RV park & Golf course. And NO one beat a Passport America rate of $8 per day. Of course Barksdale AFB was a req stop since my folks live there. Thnx for all the tips received all year. Thnx Larry, and Happy NY's to all Milcampground.us users & fans.

jsummers replied to the topic Re: Pull Throughs vs Back Ins in the forums.call ahead. Most of them will find you a pull-thru. Where do you want to go anyway ? try Redstone Army Arsenal for the largest sites I've ever found. King's BAy NSB has huge pull thru's. BArksdale AFB has `em too as are most of Ft. Sam Houston's. Just pick out one & call-you'll be pleasantly surprised. Happy NY's.

jsummers ► jazyn55 I see your herc logo. Are you an old trash-hauler like me ? We've been to about every RV place in Houston since we HQ there, family, truck stays there etc. The Good Sam park south of H on the Beltway is hte best we've found. What is that name ? Oh yeah-Advanced RV. Sounds like a auto pts store. Good luck. Fly safe-jims

jsummers replied to the topic Re: Fort Hood RV "inspection" in the forums. My RV lives in the Ft. Hood long term storage lot while we're back in AK. We come and go from Ft. Hood ALOT. The inspections are not a hardship, nor are they too timely. We have always had the best folks "doing it" and always felt better afterwards. Sorta' a good safe feeling, ya' know ? You won't be inconvienced and it won't hurt a bit. ha !!
We get inspected alot of bases. Believe it or not, Ft. Monroe was the "toughest". Sure hope the civilinas keep up that historical treasure. Can't believe the us Mil gave up on it.
