Annapolis FamCamp

Having a Truck Camper this campground is perfect for my needs. Close to everything I needed and the facility is clean close to everyplace I needed.

The campground is not in the Academy section of the Navy base. That makes it hard to find and difficult to get to. One has to drive through a residential area on a curvy road where there is a lack of signs pointing to the campground. That is one issue that makes it not big rig friendly. Another reason is that the interior campground road is gravel and hilly with some sharp turns. Most of the sites are concrete pads, but they are not long enough to provide plenty of space for a longer RV. I noticed just one pull through. Power is only 30 amp. There is no sewer. I did not use the dump station. The bath house is an older, heated, cinderblock building. It was clean, but adequate only to serve its purpose. The Wi-Fi signal is not generated from within the campground and is weak. I suspect reception is based on your site location. There is nothing for the kids to do. A primitive area exists for tent use, but sites aren’t marked. Verizon 3G was fine. During another season, I suspect there would be little satellite signal reception. There are a lot of trees. Over the air TV channels are plentiful. The campground is half full of permanents; most likely service members who are stationed there. It is a short drive to the full service commissary, Exchange, gas station (no diesel), and golf course. Check in is at the MWR/gym facility that is past the campground. There are no convenient places to park an RV while you register. They honor the America the Beautiful card for a 50% discount and that is reflected in my rate. This is just an OK campground that is better suited for shorter rigs and those who want an inexpensive place to stage from while being a tourist. It won’t be on my return list.

R.L. left this review using the Directory software: - This is beyond a doubt the worst experience ever! Phone reservation went slowly. I was told we'd have to take site 5 for 2 nights and then move to site 12 for 2 nights. Not great, but acceptable. It took about an hour to actually get checked in. The people seemed to care and were friendly enough but either their system is broken or there is no training. She found the first 2 nights easily but was totally lost on the last 2. After checking with everyone in the office and calling someone to go out and physically check the campground (none of which was helpful at all) it was finally decided that the book and the computer didn't agree with each other. Then another long wait to process the credit card charges to cover both sites. I asked why we had to move and was told "some rigs are too large for some of the sites" Actually most of the sites are similar in size and hold our 35' fifth wheel with no problem. There are at least 4 empty sites so it will be interesting to see what the rest of the visit holds. This place is badly in need of someone to take charge and straighten things out. The sites are adequate but nothing special, kind of brushy. Unless you really want to be close to Annapolis I'd try one of the many other camps in the area instead.

The instructions were right on the money for checking in, easy to find and the Personal were great to work with. I did have electrical power problems one day and they had an electrician out within two hours of my reporting the problem and fixed with in a half hour after that. This is not a "Resort" but a "Campground" in a very quiet woody area and we loved it. Other campers were never a problem and in fact very outgoing and helpful as was the Base Staff when I had mechanical problems with my Tow Dolly. Wonderful place to stay and I would recommend to anyone and the price can not be beat.

The MWR here at Annapolis is a great place to stay! We loved the atmosphere here and the outdoors in the middle of metropolis. We used it to stage jaunts to DC & other attractions around the area. The NEX & Commissary were close by & they were stocked really good with the things we needed. The post gas station was also close by and it said that it had bio-deisel and flex-fuel. We could not have asked for a better park to stay in.

Stayed here two nights early Nov 2011. Found the check in staff Less than helpful. Was like pulling teeth to get info. This was our first military Fam Camp and although the area was convenient and the base was beautiful, the camp grounds were not very well kept. Sites were overgrown, Table pads were full of mud (side where we had to walk to enter trailer). Asked if someone could come and clean up the pad or if we could move to another site. the move was NO and basically it was NO to having some one down to the camping area to do that before the next day. Finally asked if we could have a small shovel or push broom etc. again the answer was NO..."wouldn't know where to find one". Bathrooms/showers are dingy and unkept. Only good thing was my wife did find a shovel in the women's bath!! LOL

Nothing has changed since our first visit here in 2005. But we return every year. Rates have not changed either, still $18/$9 Golden Age Pass. Cleanliness has diminished since our last visit. It's still a good value though.

the location is great for visiting the area. the campground itself was a disgrace. weak power,dirty sites, the bathroom had the same garbage from the day we checked it until the day we left (7). complained daily, did not help. was told they were going to totally redo the campground. Has this ever happened? west point had a great campground, annapolis is the worst campground I have in even after 8 years of fulltimeing and using alot of private or public campgrounds.

NEX gas station near the NEX/Commissary has a B20 Diesel Pump. It is set for only $35.00 limit on credit and debit. That will hardly fill a VW, but it takes multiple times to fill anything larger. The package store is operating from the NEX building temporarily.

Stopped on the way south, easy to get to off US 301. Bathhouse was clean and warm! Called when we reached the FamCamp and they gave us a site, than drove to MWR to sign-in with just the pick-up. It would have been tight to drive our 42 ft 5th wheel there and turn around. Small FamCamp, but easy to get around. We had site 2, which is a pull thru. Looked like the only one.

Coming down US301 and across the Bay Bridge, the FAMCAMP is only a couple of miles to side-track to. I agree with previous recent reviews that the bathhouse has definitely improved - amazing what a coat of paint will do. It was much cleaner than on previous visits. One checks in at MWR located in the base gym. If you have only the motor home and no toad, there's a large parking lot on the left past the gym at the end of the road, only a short walk back to the gym. Retirees can eat in the mess hall - we enjoyed a delicious chicken cordon bleu dinner for $4.25 each.

This updates my review of July 2009. Not much has changed. However the bath house has had some attention. New partitions in the "commode" area for both mens and womens sides and fresh paint on the walls and decks on the mens sides have brightened up the facilities and made them easier to clean. So, someone is trying to keep the facilities acceptable!! The cleaning crew provides daily attention. In talking with the MWR folks, the funding for improvements remains "iffy". Rates are holding at $18/night, $9/night with Golden Age/Senior Pass. It remains, however, a great value for this area, the National Capital Region.

We agree with previous comments and nothing much has changed. The campground is old and a bit overgrown with branches and vines hanging over the dirt road. The sites are paved and level and we did not have any trouble with the 30 amp power except when we tried to run both A/C units. No problems running just one unit, thank goodness, as it was hot and humid. Bathhouse is very old and we did not use it. Best thing about this CG is the location. Just minutes from the Academy and easy access to Baltimore and DC. And the price of just $9 with the Golden Access card can't be beat. We would definitely stay here again.

This is a small park that needs work. Improvements have been on and off the schedule over the past several years. Funding always seems to get diverted elsewhere. Check-in has returned to the front lobby of the Rec Building. That being said, the convenience to Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington DC cannot be beat for the price; $18/night, $9/night with Golden Age/Senior Pass (which is why I have been coming here every year since 2005). The park is generally quiet, though in July/August, the Naval Academy Midshipmen bring the Plebes here at 7AM for their running exercises. There’s the concomitant “HooRah, etc” that goes with 18-19 year olds trying to impress their “mentors”. I don’t know why they chose this spot; maybe I’ll write the Superintendent and ask him (I know him!). There are 14 RV sites and 2 “primitive” sites. Each RV site has 30 Amp Electric and water hook-ups and a picnic table. A common sewer dump is located adjacent to the bathhouse, with a set back requiring a 15-foot hose or some maneuvering to get in dumping position. All sites have level concrete pads, about 28 feet long; at least half can accommodate a big rig up to 38 ft. Sites 11 and 12 can handle a 40 footer (tucked in tight). Site 2 is the only pull-thru. The bathhouse leaves a lot to be desired. It is cleaned daily but the lack of paint and fixture upgrades has taken its toll. The showers are hot and the toilets work. If you have teenage or younger girls, you will precede them to take care of the spiders and other creepy crawlers that live there despite the cleaners. Or, just listen for the screams of terror and then go and take care of them. Exchange, commissary, package store (Class 6), gas station and rec center are less than a half-mile away. The US Naval Academy, about a mile away, has a respectable medical facility and pharmacy (if they don’t have it, they’re connected to the US Navy’s Bethesda National Medical Center, so if you have the time, you can get it). You won’t come to this FamCamp to hang around all day, rather use it as a base camp to explore and enjoy all that National Capitol Region offers. So if you can suck it up with respect to its shortcomings, ENJOY!!!

C.H. left this review using the Directory software: Very handy location. Satellite TV (DISH Network, anyway,) is possible only from sites 4,5, or 6. Verizon Broadband Access available. Same old bathhouse - nothing fancy, but at least the water is nice and hot in the showers. I asked the gal that checked me in at MWR about the rumored closing for renovations. She couldn't tell me when, if at all, it might happen. Also, the check-in place has moved from the front of the gym/rec center to downstairs to the Liberty Lounge in the rear of the gym building. I wouldn't exactly call it big-rig friendly, but with care most sites can handle good-sized rigs.

Stayed here two nights to visit local attractions. The campground is across the river from the naval academy. Highly recommend you visit Naval Academy chapel. It is a beautifully adorned cathedral. The tomb of John Paul Jones and other historical sights are available for visitors to see. Visiting the nation's capital is only a short drive away. The view across the river is very nice from a well-maintained picnic area within walking distance. The campgound was very disappointing though. No sewer hook-ups available. The spaces were very cramped with the trees so close. Could barely get my awning out. No fires are allowed. Luckily, I wasn't there for the campground amenities.

Just stayed one night. Campground was clean, but not up to standard as most are. I was disappointed in the campground considering it was at the USNA. One would expect better. Did not go on base so no comments there. Office for check in is inconvient to get to with anything more than tow vehicle or dinghy.

Restrooms only cleaned once in 10 days and each weekend had 75-100 boy scouts using the small restroom. A true disgrace for what could be one of the primo campgrounds in the military system. Complaining did no good. A lot of poison ivy and poison oak in the area around some of the sites. Rumored to be closing in October, 2007 for a remodel. Hopefully it will include 50 amp and sewer hookups at each site. Golden Age pass accepted.

Easy access to all of Annapolis especially the Academy and the harbor. Both are must sees. Satellite reception is non existant due to the trees but good reception on antenna. Dirt roads, but smooth level pads and wide enough for small patio. Picnic table at each site and some permanent looking residents had fires though unknown if legal. Would definately stay again. Very quiet except for the sounds of the midshipmen coming across the river, taps, revely, band practice and cheering at intermural sporting events. The restroom/showers are about 10 years overdue a remodel, but they were cleaned every day. Would be a five with sewer and new bath facilities.
