Very good facility "once you get there". Follow instructions to back gate or you'll be directed to it if you try the Front Gate. The local traffic is always a challenge and after a long day on the road calls for special alertness. I am from Charleston and know the traffic situation up close. Recommend visitors arrive before "quitting time" or much later. Lane changing may require a little aggressive behavior :-)...Once on base, the relief is immediate after the first drink. T.B. left this review using the Directory software: - Wes, the host was super. He provided us with a wealth of local information. I was concerned about the "no reservation" policy that they may be full and I'd be stuck. However, Wes assured me that even if the sites were full that he would have found room even if it required dry camping until a site opened. Nice to know there is little risk of being turned away after a long drive. The campground is really nice. The pads are large and include a patio. This is one of the best. Great famcamp. The host escorted us to our site and then proceeded to give us a great briefing on the park, base and local area. The sites were great, long cement pads with plenty of elbow room. About the only negitive is the water drainage leaves a lot to be desired. We had a good rain one afternoon and water was over an inch deep on our site and deeper in other places. After about 24 hours, all the water was gone but made for a mess initially. You would think the drainage would of been well designed since the area see's a lot of rain each year. The park is near the rec center with a lot of things to do on base and the interstate is easy on easy off. We had a great time exploring Charleston area. We only wish we could of been here longer. We stayed here in a 5th wheel and will stay here again when in the area. Feb 6-10, 20132 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Wes, the camp host, was wonderful. He showed us to our campsite and while we were hooking up he was busy blowing the tree leaves off of our pad and washing the picnic table and benches. He had a welcome packet ready with the base map and information as well as local attractions. The laundry room and bathrooms were very clean and new. Although you have to go around the perimeter of the base to get to the back gate, the campground is tucked into a great location next to a walking path and several outdoor activities like ball diamonds, golf course, and playground. The REC office is located at the entrance of the campground with lots of extras that can be rented like a rock climbing wall, campers and even power wheels for the kids. They also sell tickets to local tourist attractions at a discount. This is a top notch campground with attention to detail! March 9, 20131 of 1 people found the following review helpful
What a great job they did on expanding this campground. Sites are large and interior roads are good. Talked to folks staying there and not a negative comment about anything and several mentioned how great Wes was without us asking so this means a lot. I like the clearly stated length of stay rules and yes I do mention this frequently but it gives us all a chance to decide where we want to stay and we know up front what the rules are. I also believe this would be a strong contender if Campers Choice was still being done. Feb. 18-21, 20131 of 1 people found the following review helpful
We only stayed 3 nights but what a prime spot for being a tourist. Everything is within a reasonable driving distance. Wes was a great host and gave us so many brochures with so many options. He came right over to our site after he got back from an outing and checked us in. If we ever come back this way, this will be on top of our list of places to stay. Almost hate to go. If there was a 6 star rating this Famcamp would get them from me accross the board. I stayed here for 2 weeks while at CHS for my annual tour. I have a large rig and it fit with room to spare. Everything is as clean and level as in any high dollar rv resort I have ever seen. Wes is an incredible host. All that you can read about him below is true. I know they are not doing the Campers Choice awards this year but since they completed the remodel of this park back at the beginning of the year, I know for my vote this park is beating the 5 time east coast winner hands down. Wow... what a great place. The campground host Wes is fantastic. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back. Super clean campground and the bath house with the washers and dryers are very clean. Recommend visiting... 12-15 November 20120 of 0 people found the following review helpful
We pulled in late on a holiday (Veteran's Day) and the camp host met us at the entrance. Gave us our choice of two sites, showed us to the site, got out his blower and blew the ever falling pine needles clear of the entire site and helped us get situated. He then sat down with us and and gave us many information flyers about the Charleston attractions while he registered us. Our site was beautiful, a full and perfectly level concrete pad with easy hookups and many trees surrounding it. Loads of room for slide-outs and car. Sites are oversize with plenty of space between adjoining sites. The base facilities are modern and first class. We visited the library, commissary and BX. Effective 10/01/12 only the retiree can dine at the mess hall, dependents are no longer allowed. We chose the site farthest from the camp entrance and our wi-fi was unreliable. Otherwise, we were extremely impressed with the camp and highly recommend a visit. 22-27 September 20121 of 1 people found the following review helpful
As usual, Camp host WES is man on the spot with help and info. Restrooms/showers are as clean as an operating room. RV sites are well kept and clean. Meals at dining facility are good. All base personnel are exceptionally polite. Exchange and Commissary well stocked, clean and convenient. The only improvement would be cable TV if the cable companies would charge MWR an arm and a leg for it. Wifi worked well. If you haven't been here then DO IT! You won't be disappointed. 3 Apr 123 of 3 people found the following review helpful
R.M. left this review using the Directory software: - Recreation Center personnel (Brenda) was very helpful and showed us around the camp spots when we arrived. Camp Host West, came by after we got set-up and gave a very detail and informative briefing with brochures, maps, sightseeing information, and hours of operations of base facilities. Retiree and spouse can eat at the dining facility. No open toe shoes allow in the dining facilities so be aware. The Famcamp is exceptional maintained. Two locations for showers, restrooms and laundry within the camp. We give this Famcamp and personnel an A+++++. One of the nicest Famcamps we have visited. BX and Commissary well stocked and all personnel we met were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our seven days here and would come back! 19-25 April 20122 of 2 people found the following review helpful
This is a very nice facility that in my opinion rates at the top. Wes and Ted are excellent hosts. Wes led us to our site, directed me backing in, and then sat with us at our picnic table while we completed our sign-in paperwork. He gave us a lot of nice to know info about the base and Charleston as well as maps, etc. We were extremely impressed with the level concrete pads that allowed us plenty of room to back our 32' 5th wheel to the back of the pad leaving lots of room to park our F-350 crew-cab/long bed dually in front of the RV with room to spare. All the pads are like the one we occupied, whether back-in or drive-through. The pads also have a nice extension with new medal type picnic tables that are very nice. There is plenty of room between spots so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbors. The roads leading in and out of the park as well as through the park are paved, in excellent repair, and plenty wide. As others have stated the bathrooms are extremely clean with what looks like stainless steel sinks, urinals, commodes, etc. Showers are large with seats for those that need them. The washers and dryers are located in same bldg and are new ($1.25 wash and $1.25 dry). The commissary and exchange are next to each other and well stocked. Retiree's can use the dining facility. Note: our GPS attempted to route us to the front gate which will not allow RV entry. Be sure to go through the back gate which is also close to the campground. We took the Aviation Avenue exit (211) and then followed signs to the base. Be sure to watch for the sign on the right advising RV's to go through the X-Ray machine drive-through. If you miss it you will be required to turn around and go back. Again, a really great experience! 12-23 APRIL 20120 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Much improvement since last year. New spaces/roads are paved with full hookups. No cable TV but 19 over the air TV channels. WiFi is available but most times I had to take laptop and drive around CG until it synced up. Signal strength is 5 bars all over CG. CG is extremely well maintained. When someone leaves within minutes a camp host is on site to clean and ensure site is ready for next patron. Noise level during the day is not unbearable but expected since being nearly on top of the air strip, skeet shooting range, small arms shooting range and some base construction. Since seeing Charleston during the day is the main reason for being here the daily noise is not a concern. Downtown Charleston is a straight shot down I-26. Base exchange/commissary is very convenient. Dining facility is walking distance and serves good food very cheap. Pet vet is behind office in case of emergency. Shower/laundry houses are immaculately clean. After the word gets out about the improvements here I expect it may be well populated but so far except for the early part of April the CG has had numerous spaces open. I usually call for a status when I am within 1-2 hours since they don't take reservations. Overflow is concrete slab with electric & water and if that is full the camp host will make extraordinary effort to at least find you a dry camp spot until someone departs which is usually within a day or two. So far the camp hosts have said they have turned no one away. 11-13 April 20120 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Great campground. Very clean and organized. The host (Wes) was very helpful. We were in the overflow (4 spaces w/ electric and water). Pretty much in a parking lot but still good. The regular spaces looked very nice indeed... shady, wooded and not too tight but FULL! I have a feeling they are always full or close to it. Two nice, clean bath houses with coin operated laundry. Gym is VERY nice. We ate at the DFAC for dinner and the "9th Hole" at the golf course for breakfast. Both within easy walking distance. I don't understand the "no reservations" policy at some campgrounds. Could travel a long way just to be turned away???? We got lucky... our space was one of two left! Charleston has at least 2-3 days of stuff to see and do. 13 March-16 March 20121 of 1 people found the following review helpful
This was our first visit and certainly not our last. Great location for visiting Charleston and surrounding area. Wes, the camp host was most helpful in taking us to site and giving us info on campground and area. Sites are concrete (we were on 23) full hookups, very clean and campground is well lighted. Commissary and Exchange well stocked and convenient to campground. Also, the MWR sells the Frequent Camper Logbook that includes the latest edition of Military Campgrounds book for $30. We have been trying for 3 years to find one. MWR next to campground is well stocked and even has nice rock climbing wall. The park is beautiful after $1.4 million upgrade. Pull thru and and back in sites. Big rig friendly. No cable but plenty of local HD channels. Wifi is great. 18 Oct to 21 Oct, 20114 of 4 people found the following review helpful
This park is all new! 50 amp service, full hook up, and new bathhouse and laundry room! With all new washers and dryers. All paved with added night lights at the hookup pedestals. The park now has WIFI throughout! The price is 20 bucks a night, and the park is fantastic. Loads of local activities, close to shopping, easy off the interstate. DO go through the X Ray machine before entering the back gate! It's off to the right before the gate. DON'T MISS IT! Jan 17 - Feb 18, 20110 of 1 people found the following review helpful
A.C. left this review using the Directory software: Campground not the best but for the price $12.00, it is great. Staff are great and friendly. 1 Nov 20101 of 1 people found the following review helpful
J.K. left this review using the Directory software: After spending $20-25 at other locations with no cable or 50 amp, I was happy to pay $12 at this location. Staff was great. Oct 20091 of 1 people found the following review helpful
A clean park to stay in very close to the interstate and easy to get to everything the Charleston and surrounding areas have to offer. It is located right behind the landing strip so be prepared for noise from the aircraft and also the rifle range is right there so gun shots were often heard. There are no sewer hookups on individual sites which I was told are coming soon along with 50 amp service. Right now they only offer 30 amp service. There is a sewer dump station available. The one big complaint that I had was the mens shower water was only turned on once in awhile so it's hard to take a shower and the times are not posted when the water will be on or off or even why it's not left on all the time for our use. I had to leave the park and travel elsewhere to obtain most of my showers during my stay. If your going to stay for only a night or two it's worth the stop but I would not recommend it for long restful stays. |
