A nice park located on the bay. Great view watching the passing Naval vessels.

This was our 6th time here and so far we have never been disappointed. Because I made our reservation only 30 days out we had a front row site 9 which is the only one on grass. The site was level and had plenty of room would stay on it again. This is our favorite military CG! April 6,20131 of 1 people found the following review helpful
We stay at the park every year and really like it. This year we were surprised to learn that sites 1,2,3 do not have wifi reception. Park residents are on their own to talk to the Gowifi providers. Gowifi told me that there was some equipment not working and that they would send a repairman. 3 days later no repair person. In the modern age RV travelers depend on the internet to stay connected for all kind of reasons. Too bad this facility chooses to use an inferior service. And you would think that the staff would be proactive in maintaining the service. March 20121 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Last year we went stayed here for Spring Break. What an awesome place and an awesome value. Thank you to the staff for being so kind. Can't wait to return. February 20132 of 2 people found the following review helpful
R.L. left this review using the Directory software: - We love this place and plan to visit again. The location along the St. Johns River is fantastic and the staff is friendly and helpful. We highly recommend staying here! 6 Feb - 20 Feb 20132 of 2 people found the following review helpful
D.W. left this review using the Directory software: - We fully enjoyed our two weeks at Pelican Roost. Watching the US Navy ships come and go was a neat experience, especially for a Army retiree. We will return some day. We highly recommend this FamCamp for a stopover or extended stay. We paid $18 for W/E/S, add $2 for a front row site, near the water. The camp usually offers CATV however during our visit the system was undergoing upgrade and not available. Diesel is available at the NEX gas station. We arrived here with reservations made 4 months ago for a front row site. At registration we were told that we didn't have reservations even though we had a confirmation number. The check-in person had a list of March 10 arrivals and our name wasn't on it. The computer was down so she couldn't double check. We were told that dry camp was all that was available. We need electricity. My wife has to have oxygen wile she sleeps. We asked to see the manager. It being Sunday the manager wasn't in but the office person called her and she agreed to come in and talk to us. We were directed to the dry camp area to wait. We waited for about an hour and half. My wife went in to deal with the manager. She got the same story. We didn't have reservations. We weren't on the list. The manager did find us a spot with electricity and water for the night. She said she would check things out the next day if the computer came back up. The next day we went to the office and the manager produced a piece of paper with my name and an arrival day of April 10. No Way! When I make a reservation I have an index card with name of the establishment, address, phone number, arrival date and departure date. My index card had March 10 as the arrival date. When making the reservation no way would I look at March 10 and say April 10. At first I thought they bumped me for someone else or was punishing me for my complaints last year. But, I've had a week to think it over and I don't think they would do something like that. At least I hope not. We couldn't stay any longer at Pelican Roost so had to scramble to find somewhere else to stay for 10 days. NAS Jacksonville was full. We don't do commercial campgrounds unless we have to. We had reservations at Eagle Hammock to arrive on March 20. We called them and they gave us an additional 3 days up front. Crooked River State Park adjacent to Kings Bay had a site available until the weekend at which time we would have to move someplace else for 2 days. We didn't want to do that. We were able to get 6 days at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross which turned out to be a great choice. We arrived at Eagle Hammock on March 17 and checked in with no problems at all. It was not a good experience at Pelican Roost. February 14-27, 20133 of 3 people found the following review helpful
This is, by far, our favorite military RV park. The front row views are breathtaking. We wish we could have stayed for longer than two weeks, but we understand why time has to be limited--people would stay here forever! The base facilities are great, also. If there is any negative aspect to the RV park, it is that water pressure isn't great. It peaks at about 40 psi. Feb. 17-24, 20132 of 2 people found the following review helpful
This was my very first stay at any military campground and I plan on many more. Pelican Roost is a very nice facility although its a little breezy at times. The roost had 2 big screen TVs and several computers for campers use, plus free wifi and laundry. While there I enjoyed the ice cream social and pot luck. I was a little disappointed that the fast food franchises on the base charged our military men and women higher prices than was charged in the same franchises farther away from the base. In my days of active duty back in the late 60's there were no fast food franchises at all at my homeport of San Diego, so I was susprised to see them. Also when I was on active duty, the prices for gas and groceries on base were always less on base than in town, but today I didn't notice any savings at all at the exchange or gas station, in fact gas was higher on base. I was also lucky to be given a tour of one of the DDG's, a couple days later I thought I would try and get a tour of one of the CA's, but could not get past the guards at the chain link fence. I was also susprised to see that base security is no longer done by US Marines. March 20131 of 2 people found the following review helpful
A wonderful RV park with great scenary. The hosts Ed and George are great. The new manager is not very concerned about the guests. I saw her chew a wounded Iraq veteran out because he let his service dog off his leash to exercise in back of the rv park away from all rv's and guests. This was very embarassing. He left RV park the next day. 14-21 Feb 20132 of 2 people found the following review helpful
W.M. left this review using the Directory software: - Fantastic park and easily accessible off I-295. Free washers/dryers and WIFI. Beautiful clubhouse with full kitchen facilities, large screen TVs and guest computers. Ed and George were great campground hosts and took great pride in their work! Our day trips included Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach and St Augustine. One of the nicest military RV parks we've ever visited. Feb. 25-28, 20130 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Had to dry camp for our 3 days but that was ok. We were allowed to run our generator when we needed to and the water faucet was close by to refill water jugs for coffee and flushing. Made use of the laundry since it was free and there are plenty of machines. Friendly staff and campers. We learn a little more each time we stop at a new (to us) facility. So far we have been lucky (or fortunate) to find a spot when we arrive without a reservation. Our next stop is Patrick AFB and I haven't heard much that is encouraging about arriving there. Sounds like the homesteaders have that place sewed up. We shall find out tomorrow. January 20131 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Now this is an RV park that has it all and I think the 2 week stay rule is the way to run the military RV parks and learning real quick most of us do not look kindly at homesteading. I cannot think of anything negative to say about Pelican Roosts stay and will definitely come back here for a 2 week stay on my way back home. Hosts here go out of their way to assist you in any way and make themselves noticeable during the day. The Mgr. and clerical help at registration are friendly and will take the time to talk to you, make you feel welcome and coffee is always on and free. Social calendar pertains to happenings in the community room and if you want to go downtown just ask anyone what there is to do or how to get there and they will have the answers. The views here of Naval ships and ships going to JaxPort are awesome and I never tired watching them and the closest beach is being redone so hope it is done when I get back. We stayed here for two weeks in December and really enjoyed our stay (with the exception of one tiny mice finding its way into the motorhome ). We paid the few extra dollars for a waterfront site ... were told which sites were available when we arrived and selected one of them. We liked having a front row seat for watching the ships going in and out of the boat basin ... were really delighted to welcome home Hue City returning from its deployment. Friendly staff always had a smile. Triked all over the base on weekends when the traffic was light, saw plenty of birds (egrets, wood storks, ospreys, and hawks), including a quick glimpse of a bobcat in the area around the golf course. Loved the beach even though it was too cold to swim. Walked it almost daily, and enjoyed all the pelicans, gulls, terns, and skimmers, all of which seemed to have little fear of us and we could sit and watch them for hours on end. Rated the amenities/facilities a three only because we did not use them. Appreciated being able to wash the rig while we were there. We've already made reservations to return later in the year. Good to be back and very happy to know nothing wrong with our Verizon MiFi as it is working perfectly once again. While at Eagle Hammock we had difficulty getting and keeping a signal and that is the first time in two years no matter where we were that it did not work properly. They are dredging here right now and improving the beach right near the base so should be beautiful when done. Hubby actually was able to get on a tugboat and escort a ship back into the basin and me being sick missed it. Many foreign vessels have been in and out of the base even a submarine from Chile. All MWR staff is just top notch cannot say enough about their making everyone feel right at home. The 2 week rotation really is the way to go and everyone understands it and loves it and it is a fair way for all of us to use the benefit of military campgrounds. The second campground Osprey Cove for long term stays is what is needed at other popular campgrounds and some of them have areas they can designate to short term and long term and maybe just maybe we will see some of that in the near future. Still my favorite military campground but will see how it holds up as we visit some new ones for us in the next couple months. 12-13 Dec 20122 of 2 people found the following review helpful
We stopped in just for two nights as we were transiting south. Our experience was nothing but fantastic. Easy access to and from route 295 and through the base to the camp ground. We managed to take care of several admin issues while there in a short period of time including base stickers and ID cards. Base personnel were helpful and courteous. The PX/Commissary is located off base and not really in walking distance, but at least we had access to one. Overall, a fantastic place we will be staying at again. 14 NOV - 26 NOV 20121 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Very nice campground, had spot over looking ships coming in and out. If you don't have base stickers on HM and toad, take required documentation to pass and ID and get base stickers. Very easy process and took only 30 minutes. Dec 15 till Dec 20, 20122 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Just wanted to add a comment from our first two days of visiting the Roost again. It is as good as always and maybe even a little better. I would like to say thanks to the Duty Host, Woody, who checked us in while dealing with some new technology which didn't seem to work very well. He was very gracious and helpful. Would also like to thank Ed who helped me with my first time when detaching my new fifth wheel Mobile Suites camper. He was very helpful with the setup to avoid Palm trees and Electrical boxes. To top it off, we had the great Ice Cream Social on Sat night and the Cookies and Cream Ice Cream was outstanding. Fished a little on Sunday but nothing biting except the Rocks. Weather is great and looking for a little golf tomorrow while wife and Grandmother goes shopping. Will provide another write-up at end of visit. Really enjoyed meeting my neighbors. For this Navy man to be surrounded by a W4 Huey Pilot on one side and another retired Army man on the other side, I feel very safe, LOL. PS the only 4 is for the WIFI that isn't working too well at this time. Dec 13-27, 20121 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Have not been here since the spring and several changes have taken place regarding the number of sites now being used. No double ups in the grass anymore after an electrical inspection found problems that have been here for years. Small price increase in sites and the number of days you can call to make a reservation has changed and I e-mailed Larry about the changes so expect the updates and read them before you make any reservations. New hosts Jorge and Janet are top notch, friendly and helpful and just what all hosts should be. New reservationist in the office is also very people oriented and we even got to chose our site for the very first time, also something new when many sites are open. Should stop previous complaints about folks not liking the site the computer assigned to them. You just cannot find another campground that has such fabulous views and so much to do in the area. Kathey Silvey, Mgr. has done a fantastic job and she is just so likable and open minded and easy to talk to. Is this our favorite military campground, you bet it is? First time at the facility & love it! Watched the subs, ships & aircraft carriers coming in and out of the harbor for 2 weeks never got enough of it. If not for hurricane sandy it would have been perfect. Can't wait to return. Oct 10 - Oct 24, 20122 of 2 people found the following review helpful
I am definitely voting Pelican Roost as the East Coast Campground of the Year this time around. King's Bay was nice, but this place has so much more going for it as far as scenery and facilities! Sites and facilities are immaculate, utilities are very reliable, free laundry, beautiful view out over the water, very knowledgeable and attentive staff...what more can you ask for? The office and community room are a great place for the many social events the staff sets up or just a really comfortable place to hang out. Big screen TV's, guides to all the local sights, even a schedule for what Navy ships are arriving or departing (except for the submarines...I guess they like to stay sneaky...LOL) The Blue Angels were in town for an Air Show at Jacksonville, and they practiced right in front of us. Loud, but very impressive seeing them that close, especially when you're sitting in your lawn chair with a cold drink! The staff and volunteers there were outstanding. Always ready to answer any questions you might have and a Park Host would stop by every day to see if you had any problems or if they could do anything to make your stay better. About the only complaint we had was one recommendation for a seafood restaurant that wasn't very good! LOL!! |
