U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks
Featured Facility - Osprey Cove RV Park, Naval Station Mayport, FL PDF Print E-mail

Osprey Cove RV ParkWe visited Naval Station Mayport, FL during in February, 2010. This is the second RV Park available at Mayport, with the other being Pelican Roost. However, this RV Park is for long-term stays with a minium of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months. I was informed by the MWR staff that you can extend past the 6 months limit for 1 month at a time, if space is available.

Westport Recreation Park, USCG Station Grays Harbor, Westport, WA PDF Print E-mail

USGS Station Grays Harbor, WAWith the help of the Military Campground website instructions [which we have updated], our GPS, two locals, a visiting surfer dude and a map provided at the Coast Guard station, it only took us 1½ hours to find the campground once we arrived in this remote, small, quaint, seaside community of Westport on Grays Harbor.

Should be easy to find, since we are looking for the observation platform and/or the tallest lighthouse in Washington State.  It wasn’t because we were looking for the Coast Guard Station first, and the signage to the station and the lighthouse is on 105 Spur, not SR 105/Montesano St.  The USCG map spells the name of the street we needed “Forest.”  The GPS, local map and street signs spell it “Forrest.”  But, the trick is that “W. Wilson” becomes Forrest, and our GPS directed us to “East Wilson,” which ends in a parking lot by the ocean.  The GPS told us to “turn left off-road,” which would have put us in a grassy marsh.

RVing and PCSing Go Hand In Hand PDF Print E-mail

The Gustafson FamilyThe Gustafson family is RVing from Alaska to Florida during this PCS move. I caught up with them this morning as they were preparing to head out. They spent the night here at the Gila Bend famcamp in Arizona. When they left it was snowing in Elmendorf as they hauled their toyhauler to Haines, Alaska to catch the ferry to Bellingham, Washington. They didn't take off their snow tires until they were well into California. The Gustafson family uses many of the military campgrounds available exclusively to active duty, retired military personnel and DOD employees. The kids love the adventure partly because of the travel but mostly because they have Dad all to themselves for a while. Dad is a busy guy flying F-15 jets and now he's going to be the Vice Wing Commander at the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base. I told the boys they have alligators in Flordia and they thought that was cool and were looking forward to living on the beach. Laughing, one of the boys said, "We're going from cold to warm!" So next time you have a PCS move consider doing it in an RV. I have a special place in my heart for military kids - we raised five of them.

Magnolia Shade RV Park CLOSES
We'd heard Magnolia Shade RV Park at the Naval Air Station in New Orleans, LA was going to close, but was never provided the details. We've confirmed that this RV Park CLOSED on April 1, 2009. While not confirmed, we've heard that another RV Park will eventually be built at another location on the Air Station. We sure hope so, as this RV Park was located in a prime location across the river from the French Quarter of New Orleans.
