This is second time we have stayed here. No changes since last year. Small, but rural, quiet setting on base. There are a total of 10 sites, only 8 have water. Sites 9&10 share water with Sites 7&8, so have a long water hose in case you get 9 or 10. Site 1, 9 & 10 are grass, others are paved. No tall trees so satellite should work for TV. No individual sewer hookup, but dump site is adjacent to Site #1 and easy to get to. No WiFi, but Verizon data card works fine. Must go to Air Capital Inn, on your left in 2nd block when you enter Main Gate off of Rock Road. Pay up front, and check if you need to stop by when you leave - they told me no need to so long as I left by checkout time - 11AM. Nice people at the VQ (Air Cap Inn) where you check in. If not full, ask not to be next to someone as sites are fairly close. No nearby bathhouse, so be prepared to use your own or walk/drive to Shoppette or VQ if necessary. Decent value @ $14, year round, and in-town Wichita, KS. Lots of shopping - everything - nearby. Golf course and fitness trail adjacent, good outdoor location. 24 March 20091 of 1 people found the following review helpful
We just used this as an overnight stop, returning to Texas from leave. Not much to say other than clean and better armed security than other near by campgrounds. Was quiet overnight, but construction crews were working by 0700 across the field. We were the only ones there. Don't think it'd be to enjoyable if all the spaces were occupied as they are close together. Had to go to billeting to check in/out. Billeting is located at the 2nd left after you go through the main gate. Rock Road is still under construction, and is still a pain. 26 - 28 Sep 082 of 2 people found the following review helpful
It has already been said about this campground. Word is they are going to improve the campground, but don't count on it. The gym is just as bad as the campground. I don't think the base is on the closure list, but it has the feel of a base that is. Just getting past all the road construction is bad enough. They are still working on Rock Road. You have to go pass it, and do a U turn to get back to it. Stay here if your passing through. Mar 30-31, 20081 of 1 people found the following review helpful
WalMart with hookups. I don't mind that there were no amenities, but I would like full hookups. Nothing more than a great level concrete pad with water, electricity, and rudimentary cable TV. The dump station is nearby. A little too expensive ($14.00) for what was offered. But better than nothing. Nov 21-25 20072 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Agree with the other posts. This is not up to fam camp standards. The sites are pretty close together. We have double slides on one side and if there was a rig next to us with a slide on both sides you wouldn't be able to walk between them. 8 sites have water and electricity and two sites have only electricity and share water with sites one to two spots away and have to use a "T" fitting. Cable TV for local channels only and they come in as digital. Verizon air card works real good for internet. We could not find any recycling at the BX as previously mentioned. Good place for a short term stop, real quiet and peaceful. We were surprised to find only one empty site upon arriving this time of the year (Thanksgiving eve). However, the place never filled up. Free laundry (and movie:) at the lodge - where you check in. That's the biggest plus at this small camp. Great for an overnight or so, or if you're busy doing things around the area (great things around Wichita for kids to do!), and NOT just staying at the CG. Sites are very close together - not room for even putting out our awning, and there is NOTHING for kids to do there; except "get into trouble" on the golf course (behind the sites) or nearby training ranges... The commissary wasn't as nicely "stocked" with organics, and the BX was small, but there was recycling in the BX paking lot. 12-13 Aug 20072 of 2 people found the following review helpful
I agree entirely with vdub. Only good for a one or two night stay. Not what we're used to on Air Force bases. I hope they upgrade when funds are available. Apr 20077 of 7 people found the following review helpful
McConnell FamCamp is a dissappointment and definitly not up to AF standards, but help is on the way. Budgeted for FY09 is a million dollar upgrade that will increase the size of the park from 10 spaces to 29 and include full-service hookups to all sites. The upgrade was pushed back one year due to resources required for Iraq. The upgrade will include an on-site community center with showers, laundry, bath, and, eventually, game area and wifi. Wichita offers a lot in the way of entertainment and is a nice little city. Unfortunately, with the current situation, (the lack of sewer connections, no bath, and no laundry) it would be difficult to recommend this FamCamp for anything but a one or two night stop over. The base itself is very nice with a good BX and commissary. About 100 days between 1 May and 30 Nov 20065 of 5 people found the following review helpful
It is presently a very small and obscure campground with only 9 or 10 back-in spaces. Most are nice sized concrete pads that are adequately spaced apart. They do have grills and picnic tables and a new concrete storm shelter and it is well illuminated at night. The campground is located in a remote area on the south and east side of the Air Base fairly near to Rock Road. They have electric and water at each site and a common dump station nearby. The famcamp is to be upgraded to double the sites in 07. The flight pattern in on the other side of the base. The sites are just off of the east boundry road but not much traffic. |
