Featured Facility - Easter Posey MWR Campground PDF Print E-mail

Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL

Easter Posey MWR CampgroundRedstone Arsenal has TWO campgrounds located on base. Easter Posey MWR Campground is the opriginal, and older campground. We visited this campground while in the area in February, 2010. We didn't have any problems finding the campground following the directions posted here. However, we started to wonder if we were going to find it. This campgound is located in a remote part of this large base, away from all other activities. This is good for a quit and scenic camping experience, but not so good to make a quick run to the BX or Commissary. The campground is located across the street from the Tennessee Rriver.

Featured Facility - Navy Lake Recreation Area, TN PDF Print E-mail

Mid-South Naval Support Activity, Millington, TN

Loop AThis is another military installation that operates two recreation facilities. While we stayed on the Naval Base at the Midway RV Park, we visited the Navy Lake Recreation Area. This was in December of 2009. This recreation area isn't located on base. However, it's only a few miles away. Finding it was straight forward following the directions posted here. Although it was the beginning of winter, about 50% of the RV sites were occupied. Normally, you can check in at the office or with the camp host (well posted).

Featured Facility - Grassy Pond Recreation Area, GA PDF Print E-mail

Grassy PondMoody AFB, Valdosta, GA

During our winter trip in 2009/2010, we spent a couple days at the Grassy Pond Recreation Area. Following the directions posted here took us directly to the FamCamp. There was plenty of parking for large rigs to check in at the office. Our first impression when driving up was "wow"! This is more than just a USAF FamCamp, it's a full featured recreation area.

We parked at the office and checked in. They don't take reservations for the RV Sites. Luckily, there were still a few RV sites available, although the winter visitors had already starting arriving. Combine that with no length of stay requirements, many RV's had been here for quite awhile. Although, their sites were clean with no signs of "homesteading". I still believe their should be a fair length of stay requirement at recreation facilities to prevent them from becoming a housing area.

New ID Card for Retired DOD Civilians!

Until recently, there was no standard ID card for Retired DOD Civilians. Although some military campgrounds allow DOD to utilize them, it was EXTREMELY difficult without a valid ID card. This has all changed now that the DOD is issuing a Common Access Card to Retired DOD.

You can read more and obtain the DOD FAQ on this subject here.
