Featured Facility - Eglin AFB FamCamp, FL PDF Print E-mail

Camp RobbinsEglin AFB is located near Ft. Walton Beach, FL. There's actually TWO FamCamps at Eglin AFB. The "Camp Robbins" RV Park is the most widely known. Hidden away on Eglin AFB near the shores of Lake Lorraine, the directions posted here got us right to the campground. These area has paved roads with gravel RV pads, a concrete patio and a picnic table. These are FHU sites with 30Amp and 50Ampe electric available. A dump station is available. Big Rigs will easily fit in these sites and get around the FamCamp.

There's a 90 day stay limit here, and sponsored guests are allowed with a 14 day stay limit. There's a small community room with a TV located in the office. The restrooms and showers were very clean during our visit. Unfortunately, there's no Internet available at the campground. You'll need to go to the library or food court for WiFi.

Featured Facility - Mountain Home AFB FamCamp, ID PDF Print E-mail

Mountain Home AFB FamCampMountain Home AFB is located near the city of Mountain Home, ID. During our brief visit in November 2010, there were plenty of RV sites available. We followed the driving directions posted here and didn't have any problems finding the FamCamp. The FamCamp is located in a quiet part of the base, but near some train tacks. However, I'm not sure the train tracks are used anymore. There's no campground office, but there is a self check-in station. There's a supply of envelopes to use and a box to accept your money and envelope. When you arrive, take any empty RV site then return to the self check-in. If you need to use a credit card, you can go to Bldg. 2800 to check-in. If you want to get your USAF Frequent Camper book stamped, the host is site #1 can stamp it for you, or you can go to Bldg. 2800. During our winter visit, there was no camp host on duty.

Featured Facility - West Fort Hood Travel Camp PDF Print E-mail

Fort Hood, Kileen, TX

Office - Check inWhen we visited this travel camp in April 2010, I wasn't expecting much. I don't know why I had poor expectations. But I was pleasantly surpirsed on arrival. Fiinding the RV Park was no problems, but I've updated the driving directions to be a little clearer. During our visit, RV's were not allowed to enter the gate on the South side of the highway (the RV Park side), unless already cleared through inspection. We had to go to the inspection station on the North side of the highway first. Once
cleared through the commercial inspection station, you honk your horn to let the guards know you're going to the other gate and they call ahead. The gate on the South side of the highway is a short distance, just past the US-190 underpass. A little different getting through security, but it worked and was fairly quick.

We also went into the travel camp using the wrong entrance. It's the SECOND entrance to the RV Park. This will take you directly to the office for check-in. All of these instructions have now been posted in the driving directions.

Dining Hall Policy Added

We've added a new "category" to the recreation facility listings labeled "Dining Hall Policy". This category will let you know if the local installation allows retirees to use the dining hall. If the policy isn't known, this category won't appear. However, if the policy is known, it'll be displayed near the bottom of the listing above the "Firearms Policy".

If you know of a military installation that DOES allow retirees to use their dining hall, please let me know so I can get it added to the listings.
