We've stayed at this park twice before and have enjoyed our visits. It's a great park. We are here now. At first I didn't want to write this because someone here might see it and give me trouble for doing so but decided to do it anyway. We made reservations for a water front site 4 months in advance and arrived last Tuesday at about 1030. We knew we were early and would have no problem waiting for our site to open. On driving in we saw only one site (#18) open and assumed we would get it. We were assigned Site #10 which is next to Site #8A which is a search on the grass squeezed in between Sites 8 and 10. I asked the host if we could have #18 instead since it was available. He said #18 is not available and our site was going to be #10 and we would have to park across the street and wait for the current occupants to leave. We waited for 2 1/2 hours and while setting up, a motorhome came in and parked in #18. I again talked to the host. He explained that we were staying for 10 days and the person in #18 is staying for 5 days followed by someone staying for 10 days. Will someone tell me what he is talking about. It didn't take me long to figure out that he was saving #18 for his or some other staff members friends. It seems to me that at this place, if you belong to the "Pelican Roost Cliche" you can do just about anything you want to. I love this place but after 5 days I'm still upset at the treatment I received on Tuesday. I don't know if I'll come back here.

I think that is rediculous and should be reported to the MWR management. There is no reason for that. It should be equal treatment.

On thing I forgot to mention on my last post is that site 8A is an additional site that uses the lawn area that would normally belong to site 10. A small Minnie Winnie type RV is in that site now and I measured the distance from my slideout to their slide out and it's less than 6 feet. I'm not blaming the occupants of this RV. They were put in a lousy site also and they are very close to the RV on the other side. Also, I wasn't told the truth on Tuesday when I checked. The host told me that he had people coming in for 5 days on that site. This morning they moved out after 4 days and immediately another RV pulled into the site. As for reporting things to the MWR office, I don't think those people ever pay attention to what is going on in the campgrounds. I also think that they already know what is going on and is okay with it. The only way you are going to change things is to rotate these permanent homesteading campground hosts out. Only then will the cliches breakup and the favortism stops.

Ok. I know I spelled the word wrong. The spelling should be clique instead of cliches. Two different words and two different meanings. Cliche is an expression and Clique (sounds like click)is a group of people.

We really enjoy the Roost and visit a couple of times each year. Sometimes we get a great site and sometimes a not so great site but there all good sites in a special location at the mouth of the Saint John River and Atlantic Ocean. All of the water front sites are not created equal. We like the new plan where you can reserve a WF site for a couple of bucks more but I'm sure it adds headaches to the folks taking reservations and then making sure they have a WF spot for the folks that reserve them. Someone has to get the couple of sites you describe. Personally I think it was just the luck of the draw that you ended up in that site. Cancelations and no shows probably complicate the issue too. Someone that reserved a WF site also had that site before you got there and someone else will draw that straw when you leave. JMHO Bob

I understand what you are saying but, when a better site is available the first person there should get it, otherwise you are saving it for someone. They can say all they want to about the computer picking the sites, I'm going to Pensacola next week and when I made reservations, they told me what site I'll be on. I've been there several times and it's pretty set that I'll be on that site. When I get there they will not try to push me off on something else.

I know that I'm beating this subject to death but, I'm going to beat it some more and some more until I don's want to beat it any more. I've enjoyed my visit here but the way we were treated on checkin takes a lot out of it. When I get tired of speaking out or when I'm cut off, that will be the end. Our neighbor the past few days was a good one and left yesterday. We got another neighbor today in Site 8A and you would think he was a celebrity the way the park staff was reacting to him. The person that checks you in (I will never name names) came out to make sure he was geting setup okay. One of the "staff" came over and helped him hook up. The guy looked as if he could hook up by himself. He appears to be younger than me. Another fib was told to me at checkin. I was told that I can't pick my own site even though there are other sites available better than the one they assign to you. My neighbor didn't even stop and check in. He drove in and pulled right into the campsite. I was sitting outside and observed all this. I just hope he does not go out of his way sto make my life misserable as it appears he has a good start of it. Instead of parking in the middle of his site, he parked as close to me as he could get and even though we were sitting outside near the road, he parked his car almost in the road and blocked our view completely. He could have pulled up another 20 feet at least. I have a name for people like this and it is spelled starting with a "J".

Frank, venting might make us feel better but it does little to fix issues. Talking to your neighbor might help as well as talking to the Roost manager. You can also contact the MWR Director, send an email to the base CO and fill out an ICE comment form. You might also want to consider that the Roost has excellent reviews in the "facility" section here and it is regularly voted as one of the top two military campgrounds on the east coast by users of this website. Personally, I think it says something about the Roost that they haven't asked you to leave after you've repeatedly bad mounthed them here. Woody must be on vacation.

No, your main man is not on vacation and I don't believe they can ask me to leave by stating my opinion. I took another look at the rules and "stating your opinion will get you evicted" was not one of them. I'll never change my opinion that there is a large clique here and you have to belong to it. This may be my last post on this subject as I talked to the manager this morning. My neighbor moved his RV up some further blocking our view. That's okay but he did it with his windshield covered up and is about 6 feet from us. The manager was very nice and explained the way things are done as for as assigning sites and I understand the system better now. She also said she will look at marking Site 8A better so the people in that site is not so close to Site 10. The person in that site at this time did not center into the site. He's way off on our side which makes him closer than desired. This may be my last post but a review will be coming.

I hesitated to post here as we have been going to Pelican Roost since it opened. In the past there was a much larger group of people who stayed here for extended periods of time as they were MWR staff who had their RV's in the campground year round or close to it, so they became a home away from home family, much less MWR staff here now and believe me when I say there is no clique. We are old timers coming here and we get assigned the same as anyone else, whatever is available when we register and it is of course based on length of time you stay. We were the 45' RV in site 8 for two weeks and we were there when Frank came in. Just my opinion but Frank arrived at about 1030 and check-in is officially at 1400, waiting for several hours to get into your site may have been the catalyst that upset him so much, more than not getting the site he wanted or thought he deserved. There were about 4 different units that came and went in site 8A as they stayed a few days and sure some of them were close to us, we used the situation to make some new friends and this is the first time in all these years we had site 8 with site 8A being so close. Frank I am glad to hear you talked to Kathy as she is on the right track to making this campground even better than it is already. I bet you know now how easy she is to talk to and next time you will talk to here immediately if something needs to be brought to her attention.

I hate to disappoint you but I didn't get upset because I was early. I knew check-in is at 1400 and expected to wait if that was the case. We've arrived early before and was assigned an open site. The problem this time, there was an open site and we weren't assigned to it. Also, when you were in 8, I bet you had more room between your 45-footer than we have right now. And your door didn't open up into their RV. And when you were here, you probably didn't have a jerk for a neighbor. I'm still sticking to my story about the clique.

Frank A. Good for you on holding your ground with some of these other posters. Ask you to leave My God! They would have to hook a truck to Me and my rig and drag me out of there for stating my opion. I had a experience there 4 years ago and have not been back. And your right the HOMESTEDDARS that are the "Camp Hosts" Need to be rotated out as it should be at all MCG. Those that defend them when they are wrong are so far up thier butts so they get the prefeered service.

Hey jazyn55. I will never change my story on this subject. There is more sucking up around here than at all of the rest of the campgrounds put together. I think my talk with the manager is going to get that one site marked so people can't park up against the people in the other site. She seems to have the attitude that other people have opinions and listens to them. It will be interesting to see if she follows up on the problem. And by the way, I love your C-130 picture.
