Well, I have camped at Ft. Fisher many times and last year I took a day and drove up to Onslow Beach. At Onslow Beach it seemed that you were not close to anything except the beach and a small Exchange. Sand dirt roads and camping spaces as I remember. I prefer Ft. Fisher which has paved roads and concrete camping pads (used to be where the airmen put there mobile homes). Ft. Fisher is also just an extension of Kure Beach and Carolina Beach so there are plenty of restaurants, a couple of grocery stores, fishing pier, etc. within a mile or three. The camping spaces at Ft. Fisher have lots of space between them and there is grass. The spaces at Onslow were a little closer together than I like. Looked to me like there were lots of folks at Onslow for the fishing. I saw lots of folks fishing in the waterway behind the campground and I saw a few folks surf fishing on the beach. At Ft. Fisher you can walk across the street and surf fish, go up to the Kure Beach pier, or walk to the other side of the campground and fish in the Cape Fear River. There were lots of folks at both places and I am sure they both have lots to offer. I personally prefer Ft. Fisher since there are plenty of places to take the wife out to eat so she gets a vacation too and everything you need is just a few minutes up the main drag. I'm sure the folks that go to Onslow like it just as well and maybe I missed something as for the being kind of isolated thing. That was my first time there and maybe there is access to a built up area that I did not see. It just seemed a little more out in the boonies than I like. If so, I am sure somone will chime in and let you know.
