This is the way to run a FamCamp. Boy were we surprised how nice this gem of a campground was. We had traveled for almost 3 weeks when we got here for our last week of leave, and what a way to end our trip. One word, RELAXING! A charming little base with good amenities for such a small place. I don't know what the Coast Guard is doing, but the Navy and Air Force could learn a LOT from these young men and women. We were routinely greeted and welcomed everywhere we went. From the great gym, to the nice movie house, to the awesome galley. Breakfast for 2.40, dinner from 3.85, and the food was EXCELLENT. They are family friendly and all are welcome to eat there. Contrary to the other comments, the seafood buffet was delectable, equal to a 5 star restaurant in Chicago. I must admit, we were able to get in right away, so the food wasn't gone. Our retired "friends" weren't let in until almost the end. By then, I had consumed 6 LARGE crab legs that were dynamite, a pound of large pacific shrimp, and an awesome fillet of sea bass. We hated to leave, and at 16 a night, this is value. The only drawback was no sewer at the site. They have wild blackberries all over the place. We picked enough to make an awesome pie, and plenty for our ice cream too. The lake is nice, the trees smell great, and deer walk all over the place. They have a free RV/car wash site on the old helo pad too! Overall, it was THE BEST military campground we have ever stayed at. We will be back as soon as we can. Pt. MuGu and Fairways at NBVC could learn a lot with a stay here. A hearty ooh-rah to this base and it's fine staff and CO. Thanks!

My wife and I found out about this facility a few years ago when we used to store our VW EuroVan at Miramar. It is a charming "North woods" feeling place right near the charming town of Big Bear. It has tennis, horseshoes, volleyball, pool table, and great fire pits. It is quiet and spacious. We stayed there in our VW twice, then this past visit we camped, as we sold our van when we were stationed in Hawaii. It was great as usual, except for the shower room which is always a little dirty, and cold. Our only problem was our close encounter with a HUGE bear. He slapped our tent at 2 am looking for food. It was the most scared we have ever been. I recommend the place, but only in a safe camper.

This is without a doubt 100 times better than Pt. MuGu. It is clean, well kept, grassed, and modern, for the same price. The location is good, the showers are spotless, and the sites are large and roomy. Now the complaints. PRICE!! 690.00 a month for an RV slot?? WOW!!! With ZERO amenities. Wonder how much profit they make off of us?? I bet it's a lot. They even nickel and dime you for laundry. I can't understand why they feel they need to charge this kind of jack, just cause it's California?? I know it doesn't cost near what they say it does. They could cut costs immediately by employing one person to run the office, instead of 3. Usually, the two girls there are outside chatting and smoking, and the male manager (I am not naming names on purpose) is rarely there. When he is, complaints fall on deaf ears, and he does nothing to address concerns. Just BS about how he doesn't have a say, he answers to yet another manager. Have the camp host earn some of the 690 a month he gets free, and by the way, living with one of the office managers, by cutting the grass. Monthly rate should be 450 a month, not 690. The only reason they get away with it is cause the place is nearly full all the time. I think it's a crime how the MWR treats current and former military members here and at Pt. MuGu, raking in HUGE profits. You know, make some money, but don't RAPE us. Also, the "clique" is in force here too, bending rules for "friends". They still charge 21 A night for "preferred" guests. We live there full time too, but are charged the full rate. I would advise anyone staying in this area to patronize private campgrounds when you can, and force these greedy money hounds to lower their prices!! Cut the staff to 1, and start treating you like a guest, not as if you must kiss their *** cause they give you the honor of staying there.

My wife and I are stationed here, and basically live in the facility. While the ocean and views are spectacular, that is about it. There is an engine testing facility within the camground, and it is LOUD! Forget a quiet day of rest here. Also, the jets and planes fly right over your rig, ruining any ambiance. Tom, the camp host does a good job with limited budget. The shower rooms are clean, but the men's shower has a broken head in one unit, and there is no heat, which is needed here cause it is COLD most of the time. Most sites are 30 amp, and the 50 amp are worse location. Sporadic use of internet, some sites don't work. Our main complaint after all that, is the price. Outrageous at 690 a month (23 per day, no monthly rate). Ridiculous to charge monthly active duty this rate for ZERO amenities. Most other MWR camrgrounds in other states charge FAR less, and offer FAR more. Selling the view as the main reason this costs so much is bull chips. We were at 630 a month, and were supposed to be "locked in" for 6 months, but greedy manager insisted on collecting 690 to be "fair." fair to who? the mangers who collect good salary for 10 hour work week? I think not. I could live with the limited amenities and the noise if the price was right. We live here due to poor base housing and costly rentals in town, mostly to save on gas. If we didn't have to, we wouldn't stay here. I recommend the nearsest KOA, pay the same or less and get a HOT TUB and POOL!!
