I was going to make an elaborate entry but the posts by bwzander and OldAFChief fully reflect our view. We left on 13 Dec to be with the kids for Christmas but will return in early Jan. The rotations are a small "price" to pay and the dry camp is better than some that I have paid a lot of money for. $21/$11 vs $120 is a deal...esp given the nice facilities. Plus, the pooch is missing Loretta's dog biscuits!

I have RV’d a lot. This CG has the most friendly, professional, cordial, accommodating staff anywhere! A big Hooah to the Ft Fisher staff! We like it here. It is unconventional and that is part of the charm. An aspect we particularly liked the unstructured nature. Families were able to have a fun time without a zillion “rules”…very few signs and the few that exist just identify boundaries. Zero "policing" by a CG Host or MP’s…and, yet, campers were quite sociable and responsible...amazing (not really)!. Golf carts are welcome. Biking (even, horrors, without helmets) is great and the beach is a reasonable walk away. Nice pier on the river side. The regular RV sites are quite nice. What is unconventional is the spreading of overflow sites around the post. We stayed in the conventional and overflow sites. Some are great and, some are less great. But, they are $13, and I was glad they were there!!! 2 weeks ago we paid $50 at the Wilmington KOA for a site that did not have sewer and we shared the patio area with our neighbor. And, there was no river or ocean nearby. I’ll take Ft Fisher anytime. And, there is a nice museum on post. Did I mention that the staff is superb???

This was our 3rd or 4th visit over several years. As always, thoroughly enjoyed it and extended our stay twice. Office staff and hosts very accommodating, professional and friendly (and no, I don't know any of these folks and they don't know me.) Our reservation was on file and honored exactly as made. Not arguing with or disputing other posters -- just providing another data point. They've added new, very nice, tables at every site and have almost completed a fenced dog playground. My Verizon-Laptop tether worked great.

The new sites are almost complete. They are in the final stages of installing the sewer hook up and paving the roads. It's a bit of a mess now because they had a lot of rain right in the middle of laying down the road sub surface and its muddy. All will be finished soon and it will be quite nice. The parking is strange...you have to parallel park in many. The Commissary and PX are small but adequate. The base gas station is accessible and cheaper than town. Strong Wifi. Free ice. There is a Lowes and Walmart in town and a great Chinese buffet that even includes steaks! Office guys are great and most helpful. For those traveling to/from Mexico, this is a good staging area since Brownsville is only 2 hours away. We'll be back.

Really enjoyed the facility. All the staff was superb. Great water view. No negative items. Will return.

Been here several times over the years and concur with the earlier positive comments. For the first time, it was essentially full...we got the last spot. Neighbors say it has been this way for at least several weeks. Maybe the base will expand it or maybe this is atypical? If not, homesteading could become an issue here too.

Agree with the previous positive posts and the positive comments on the Roost. We had a great 3 days there. Not surprising until you know that I had bypassed the Roost on past trips because of the dog police posts. We travel with 3 big dogs (300#s of dogs) and 2 cats and I was not in the mood for a confrontation. But then, I was reading more and more positive posts and we have never had an issue from anyone with our dogs. They are quiet (just sleep & eat) and if they are out, there´s an industrial sized poop scooper in one hand. I had no problem with their rules and, to my knowledge, we were never under surveillance. The only thing we did not do there that we might do elsewhere is let the Newfie lay tied outside by the door while we are inside. No problem...we had just come from a CG where some folks let their yappy dogs yap non-stop, even while the owners were sitting there. The approved dog walk area is right along the river...a beautiful place to stroll with the beasts. Bottom line is that if this dog lover can stay there with the herd that we have without problems, then anyone that controls their pets should be able to do so also. Almost every RV there seemed to have dogs and I never heard of anyone that had a problem. BZ Pelican Roost from an Army guy.

We enjoyed our stay. We choose to stay on the lower level without sewer hookup. We had it to ourselves. We liked the woodsy feel. The staff was superb and very friendly. As others have mentioned, it would not take a lot of money to make some meaningful improvements. Bottom line: great experience and we'll be back.

Another great visit to Onslow Beach. We came expecting to stay 4 days and stayed 10 even though the weather was not great! As others have said, the location could not be better what with the ocean a very short stroll in one direction and the Inter Coastal Waterway the other and all this for $15, full hookups, including cable! Staff in the office and the hosts could not be nicer. Another great feature that has not been mentioned a lot is that every site has a covered shelter with a picnic table inside (but it can, as earlier mentioned, make some sites tight). Another attraction is that it is very easy to get approval to drive on a part of the beach if you have 4 wheel drive. The game warden will issue you a sticker and at the far end of the rec area there is a beach access point. Dogs are permitted in this area on a leash. We enjoy taking the jeep with our dogs and beach stuff and setting up a place right next to the car on the beach. Usually the beach is almost deserted. Unfortunately, we could not do it this time because the Marines were using it for training. Some observations on the CG: during our visit, we saw no dogs off leash and rarely heard one barking and then, not for long. This is not to counter the other posts but maybe says that the problems identified have been corrected or that we were lucky to have considerate campers while we were there. We like the non-regimented feel of the CG. The rules are clearly stated, common sense, and, during our visit, people observed them without the need for any confrontation. One exception: as noted, speed is not enforced and some child is going to get hit! Government vehicles are just as guilty. I hate them, but this long stretch of road needs some speed bumps. We did not use the bath house so cannot comment on that. We have 2 Verizon phones. The LG phone worked perfect everywhere; the Audiovox barely worked anywhere. When we were last here, they had wifi but now they will rent you a cable modem for $5/day that works very well. There are a lot of wifi hot spots on base if you just want to check email occasionally. One last great thing about Onslow: seeing parents in their RV´s with their Marine who has just returned from war. The car´s have "welcome home" etc., written on them. These Marines sure look young...or is it me that looks old!

We fully concur with all the positive comments. Holbrook reflects highly on my Army! It´s not just the Air Force that has high quality CG´s , This is a gem and much of the credit goes to the hosts, Dock & Lori. They are truly hosts, not just night watchmen. The grounds and facilities are spotless. The pads are concrete with a huge concrete patio area. The Georgia pines and beautiful grassed grounds make this a delight. A beautiful lake is a short walk away. Very quiet-I faintly heard firing on the range a mile away. My Verizon cell phone worked fine. The only down side is that this place is popular and hard to get into at times. A large contingent of troops are, thankfully, coming back from Iraq this week and it will stay full since these Soldiers, rightfully, have priority. We hope to return often.

I hate to post this review. The earlier posts are spot on. Folks that know about this paradise are afraid that it will be "discovered". What wonderful views. What a wonderful staff. Doesn't get any better.

No need to repeat what the others have said. Fantastic place and VERY friendly staff. Hard to beat this fine place. Only downside will be being able to get a site even though their policies elminate long term occupancy in prime time.

Agree with the other reviews. Very nice CG in a wonderful setting. Nice pavilion with grills and fridges. They're doing work on the bath houses although we did not use them. A few of the sites share a pad so those can be a bit tight. Can hear the surf but not see it because of a big dune line. Bit of a hike to the beach if you have a handicap. Many of the rigs are long term so it could be hard to get in here. WiFi not provided but, at this time, a long termer kindly shares his satellite rig for emails checks via wifi. 10 minutes to great PX and commissary on Oceana NAS.
