We hesitate to give a good review - others will find out what a neat place this is to stay, either for the night or longer. Our week's stay turned into 11 days and even then, we were reluctant to leave. The gate personnel are some of the friendliest and most helpful we've met. Downsides are the dusty roads and the trains - this is a busy east-west corridor. But w/windows closed because of cool temps, we were never bothered. When we were there, they were still looking for a host for this season. This will be a definite stop again in the future. FYI, the post office is located at the Pilot Truck Stop across the interstate.

Our first time here - we are impressed w/the long level sites, good water pressure, good electric, but most importantly, the very friendly and helpful staff. Propane price is best we've seen in six years of traveling - $1.35/gallon (we were told it infrequently changes based on what they get charged.) More noise from trains than anything else but that may depend on where site is located. Word to the wise: you can get UPS or Fedex packages delivered here but UPS will not deliver if the road is flooded. Not sure of Fedex policy. Maybe not enough demand to warrant the extra time needed to take the detour. When we scheduled delivery, weather was fine but even tho on delivery day we got very little rain here at FSH, north of here got more, thus raising Salado Creek's level quickly. Great value for the location. We'll stay here again next time we are in the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay there. Sites in 'back' row have more room for toad or tow vehicle parking. We ran into a bit of confusion with our site number which had been assigned when we made reservations. When we checked out the site, it was still occupied (it was well past check out time.) Their site assignment system is manual - we were then assigned another site, which was also assigned to someone coming in on another day, so they were re-assigned their site--the famcamp version of "Musical Chairs". We're not sure why they bother assigning site numbers at all - it didn't seem to make a difference. Entrance is through main gate - we had no problem with our 58' truck/RV combo despite the sign at the entrance. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Access to CG w/rig is easier to find if you come in Gate 9 (Rideout Rd/Hwy 255) off of I-565. After getting thru gate, go less than a mile and pull a U-turn heading north again (plenty of room), then take right onto Goss Road. Stay on Goss up and down hill, then follow signs for RV park (sign on right). If you miss it, you can take right at light on Vincent Drive and take a right when you see another RV park sign. In the past, we've stayed at older CG (sites too short for us), at Space & Rocket Center RV Park, but we prefer this one. Only about $2/nite more at Redstone than Space & Rocket Center, but well worth it for level sites and no sap, ladybugs or bird droppings. We also found Redstone to be very quiet. Nice bike and walking path behind CG, lots of open areas to walk dogs. Hookups are a little far forward but doable. This used to be a housing area but all but a few streets have been filled in. If you Google or even view the area on some GPS systems, streets are still listed. Coincidentally, we were stationed on Nike St. in early 70s - we're back on Nike Street but with our own home this time.

Other reviews do a great job of summing up staying here at Camp Carr. Directions from South & West are excellent. Ramada Inn on corner is now Courtyard by Marriott, who knows what next. Dinner train has run a couple of times in the evening. It's so quiet and peaceful here that the train whistle may startle you. Small price to pay for the beauty, convenience of staying here. As far as using Melville Campground to dump: for longer rigs--negotiating that tight right hand turn off Burma Rd, up hill, may be a challenge, as is the tight u-turn necessary in the campground to dump. We checked it out first.

Very convenient to local attractions. Long sites. Only minus is location of sewer connection. Exchange located just outside of main gate; commissary past gate on Oceana Blvd, on left hand side - look for large building with columns. Aircraft noise bearable and during our stay, stopped before 11 pm and didn't resume till after 8 am.

Due to a medical emergency, we had to extend our stay an additional day. The staff was wonderful in shuffling sites around so we could remain on our site.

We lucked out with a site that had all the utilities on the correct side, but the sewer connection had a chunk of cement for a cover - didn't pose a problem. We interpret their sewer dumping rules as normal sewer usage is okay but to dump full black and gray holding tanks at once is the issue, especially during the busier season. This is off-season so weekdays were very quiet; weekend a bit noisy but not unreasonable. Just a five-minute walk to either the Cape Fear River or the Atlantic. Lots of green space to walk the dog. Easy bike ride to the aquarium, Fort Fisher State Historic Site or ferry. We enjoyed the peace and quiet here this time of the year.
