Our last visit here was about 10 years ago. Since then the campground has enjoyed some improvements: a new laundry/bathhouse and cement parking pads. I called the day before our planned arrival and Kim at MWR said there were two sites open. When we arrived there were 5, although 2 had cones in front of them and "site occupied" signs on them. Since our stay was on a Saturday night, the MWR office was closed. Kim had said there was a payment box outside the MWR office. We went by Sunday morning as we were leaving and found a box; however, it was labelled as a mail box. I slid my payment envelope through the edge of the door. Hope they found it Monday AM. They should consider putting an Iron Ranger in the Campground. For $15, this is a good deal and we'll undoubtedly stop by again. Ted H.

We stop here annually on our way south each fall. This year I had called for a reservation about a week prior to our arrival. There were only two sites available, both in the small, old camping area. But when we arrived I asked if by any chance there was now an opening for a night in the new area, and sure enough, there was. It never hurts to ask. Being in the open, getting a satellite system set up is a breeze and there's excellent VZW EVDO cellular reception. The new Exchange is open and is just a short walk from the campground. This was our first visit to the Destin Rec Center, and we will definitely be back. We called a few days before we wanted to arrive and left our phone number on the Center's voice-mail. We received a call-back within 24 hours from a very courteous staffer who quickly took care of us. When we arrived a few days later, the folks in the office very efficiently assigned to our site. When hooking up at our site, we had a problem with the 30-amp breaker - it would not stay on. I went back to the office and was given a 50-amp converter "bone" to use - no charge. We were on site 19 down near the pavilion and bathhouse, which was probably the only site from which the water of the bay can be seen. In our 26' motorhome, we had no problem backing into our site. As others have pointed out, it can be a bit tight maneuvering a larger trailer into a site. About the only slight inconvenience we encountered was that the hookups, including the sewer, were near the front of the pad, so we could not hookup to the sewer. Our site seemed unique in that regard. Not a big deal - it was easy enough to pull forward once a week when it was time to dump. A lot of the sites are not too level, so leveling blocks and/or jacks will be necessary. The bathhouse was toasty warm with very hot showers, and it was kept very clean. The laundry room provides 4 washers and 4 dryers, $.75 a load. There was also a super-large commercial washer and dryer - a great chance to wash the sleeping bag! Up in the office/community center building is a small store, selling a few souvenirs and beach items; some exercise machines, a large-screen TV, and a small book-exchange. An extra treat during our stay was a special catered Valentines Day Dinner, with some delicious prime rib. The Rec Center has lots of recreation available: bicycles, kayaks, boats. We originally planned to be here only a week or two, but due to some dental problems we had to extend our stay a couple of times; the staff was very helpful with that. One of the gals in the office referred us to her dentist, who was nearby, got us in within 24-hours, and provided excellent care. All in all, this is one of the nicest FAMCAMP's we've visited, and we've been to quite a few. We will definitely be back. Thanks, Fort Benning!

The closing scheduled for April 08 has been delayed to Dec 08. Date of our visit: 22-25 April 08. Directions: coming in from south on Hwy 1: exit at Hwy 68/Fremont Rd. This is a dual exit to the right. Do NOT take the far right lane to Hwy 68. Take lane marked Fremont Road following signs to Fairgrounds. Take first right up to Fairground Rd, turn right on Fairground. At first light, take left onto Garden Rd. Then take immediate left onto Michael Smith Lane into the Golf Course. Ted H.

We found this to be a wonderful FAMCAMP - very friendly and helpful staff, and very pleasant grounds. Sites are nicely spaced, although not quite as level as they might be. In response to earlier posts about the laundry - we did three loads with no problems. #1.00 a load washer/ $.75 a load for dryer - not a bad deal at all. As for the netting to catch errant golf balls, they replaced it during our stay, so all is well with that. Salsa Street now has a street sign and there's a small directional arrow for RV park for the turn off 23rd St. We had a day with no power, thanks to a scheduled all-day, base-wide outage so some major repairs could be made. The campground offered a 50% refund for that day. We would definitely stay here again.
