Arrived today with no reservations, and there were several FHU sites available. All facilities appear to be clean & well-maintained. PX is on the smallish side, but has the basics. Commissary is large, very nice, and well stocked. No clubs, separate or combined, on this base. The community center seems to serve that purpose. In fact, MWR has a very strong presence on this base. Sharon, the campground manager, is very helpful and knowledgeable on everything in this area. If you want to know where to go and how to get there, just ask. Regarding internet access, there is WIFI, if you're close to the office. We use the Sprint wireless broadband card, so local access isn't an issue. However, for other such users, be advised that, while the Sprint signal is strong, there is no EVDO here. You still get internet on the card, but at a reduced broadband speed. A pleasant surprise is that the military dining hall here allows retirees to use the facility. This is a perk that has been rapidly disappearing at most CONUS bases, thus the pleasant surprise. All in all, it seems like a great springtime destination.

Whoever the famcamp manager is here clearly has a "pride of place" outlook. This campground is perfectly landscaped and immaculately clean. It's as if it's his/her personal home. Truly impressive. Regarding the info about internet availability, be advised that BOTH Verizon AND SPRINT broadband EVDO have max signal strength here. We arrived after hours with no reservation and found that they had about 25 FHU sites available. We chose one from the bulletin board parking diagram, marked it off, and checked in the next morning. It's a good location for day trips to the many attractions in the southern Arizona area.

But for the fact that this fine campground is located right next to a busy freeway, I agree with all the best comments below, and would add to the info provided by our website host above, under the subject of internet access, that both Verizon AND SPRINT have excellent broadband EVDO coverage. We made no reservations, and were advised by the host during check-in, that there were a dozen available spaces to choose from.

This is a well run, well maintained famcamp. The hookups have their own area lights to simplify night arrivals, which is what we did, and the light was much appreciated to help speed the task in a drizzling rain. Instead of a combination keypad lock that you find on many campgrounds, they issue a key that is for the bathhouse and laundry, so when you depart, you need to remember to leave the key at the host shelter, or in the drop-box in the laundry. We made no reservations and, as of this date, there were several empty spaces available. Seems some of the snowbirds have flown, and as I write this I'm watching another one in a big class A making departure preparations. We're just passing through, so it's just this one night and a leisurely morning before we head down to see White Sands, and then travel on into Arizona. When you're out this way, this is definitely a fine place to stay, either overnight or longer term.

Laughlin famcamp was full, so came to Southwind Marina. Great plan B. Better than the base famcamp for pleasant setting and environment. Spent one night on the way to Big Bend National Park. Lots of deer, jackrabbits, birds, and other critters.
